P AGPANGLAKATON  SA  D ALAN SANG EMMAUS

(L UK E 24:13-35)

 A Surpr ising Stranger

Today’s Readings:  Acts 2:14, 22 – 23; 1Peter 1:17– 21; Luke 24:13 – 35. Imaginethat you’re grieving the death of a belovedfriend, who died tragically young. Tomake matters worse, he died violently, suffering terribly. Probably the last thing  you need as you mourn is a cluelessstranger who must hear the whole story.

Luke shows us the state of the discipleson the road to Emmaus: “They stood still, looking sad.” Paralyzed by grief, they can’t move ahead.

Now imagine the same scenario with onedifference: what if the intruder wereJesus? Cleopas and his companion arestuck; they can’t see the cross as anything but failure. All their hopes for Jesus andhis reign have dissolved. But somehow this stranger gets them talking and walking again. They are so drawn to himthat they urge him strongly, saying, “Stay  with us. . .”

Perhaps that should be our prayer too, asking Jesus to be with us in whateverdark trench we find ourselves. If we havelost hope, enthusiasm, or even interest,it doesn’t seem to deter Jesus. Somehow,he rekindles the dormant spark so it becomes an inner flame. He gladly joinsa long walk and conversation, winding itup, typically, with a meal.

Jesus appears in the guise of a strangerhere, suggesting that we may find him  where we least expect. When our usualsources of inspiration may disappoint, heseems to delight in surprising us. So stay alert this week! John 15:9 –17.

may pagpanglakaton. Apang indi kitamakabulag sa pagpanglakaton sangkabilugan nga katilingban. Angkalibutan sang isa kag isa bahin mansang kalibutan sang tanan.

Nadula balaang aton pagtoo? Pagpukaw man inisa aton tanan.

SENDING OUT THE DISCIPLES - L UK E 10:1-11, 16-20

V 1.  After this the Lord appointed a further seventy-two and sent them on ahead in pairs to every town and place he was going to visit himself.

Jesus chose 72 (or some documents say 70) of his followers to go ahead of him.

NB. In Jewish tradition, the number 70represented the whole world - the Gentilenations. It was the number of nations mentionedin Genesis 10, or the number of Elders whohelped Moses in Exodus 24:1

Jesus still chooses followers from all aver theworld to go out and prepare people for meetinghim. It is our job to prepare the way so thathe can convert people. Our job is to let peopleknow about Jesus, what he has done for themand what he means to us. Our job is not theconversion - that is God’s work.

This time it was not just the ‘core’ 12 who Jesus

sent out- it was a larger group. Today, he doesn’t just send out the church leaders and ordainedministers, but the whole church - a much larger group.

V 2. He said to them, ‘The crop is heavy, but labourers are scarce; you must therefore beg the owner to send labourers to harvest the crop.....

He compared the job he was giving them to aharvest. A very prolific crop but not enoughlabourers to harvest it. He told them tobeg theowner for more workers.

Our task today is enormous. We must pray for

more people to help. God controls/ owns our work. It is his job to ‘hire’ more workers. Weneed to beg him for them and ask him to directus to potential ‘workers’ for his harvest. Thenwe must depend on him to do that.

V 3.Be on your way. And look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

Quest Study Bible note: Jesus wanted his 72disciples to understand what they were gettinginto. Their task would be dangerous. Oftenthey would be rejected. Jesus was up frontabout what would happen if they worked for him.

[Similar stories are found in Matthew 9: 37-38, 10: 7-16, 11: 21-23]A warning. This is not an easy job - we are alllike lambs among hungry wolves. Inexperienced and weak lambs - not even grownsheep. We’ll be unsure, frightened and poorlyequipped to defend ourselves. The only thingwe have to hold on to is faith in the ‘shepherd’.

And we can certainly trust him to support us.V 4.Carry no purse or pack, and travel bare- foot. Exchange no greetings on the road.

The Message: Travel light. Comb andtoothbrush and no extra luggage. Don’t loiter and make small talk with everyone you meetalong the way.

He told them: Don’t take money or a back packof belongings and supplies, or even shoes! Anddon’t stop and talk to anyone. He gave the sameinstructions to the 12 in Luke 9: 3-5.

When we go out to do the Lord’s work, we areto ‘travel light’ and allow no distractions, no time-wasters. We have a job to do and we mustfocus on it exclusively with no props to rely onexcept Christ.

Vs 5, 6. When you go into a house, let your first words be, “ Peace to this house.” If there is a man of peace there, your peace will rest on him; i f not, it will return and rest upon you....

New Bible Commentary, p.998: Aman of peace is a peace-loving person, somebody worthy of the Messianic gift of peace. The greetingexpressing peace  is regarded as having aneffect on the receiver.

We are not to force ourselves and our messageon people who don’t want us there. Besensitive and don’t impose - God never does.

V 7.  Stay in that one house, sharing their food and drink; for the worker earns his pay.Do not move from house to house.

They were to accept the hospitality offered asfair payment for the work of bringing themessage. They were not to be self-indulgentand critical about what was offered to them -were not to go around town looking for the best‘deal’! They were there to bring a message, notto get what they could out of it.

We must also allow people we visit or talk withto offer hospitality to us and accept it with grace.Acceptance of hospitality signifies acceptanceof the person offering it. If we want them toknow God accepts them, we must show themwe do too. We must remember that we also havea message to bring and not be side tracked byperipheral matters.

Vs. 8, 9.  When you come into a town and they make you welcome, eat the food provided for you; heal the sick there, and say, “The kingdom of God has come close to you.”

When a town welcomed them they were to

accept hospitality, heal the sick and preach thegospel - pass on the good news of the Kingdomof God.

The Message: tell them God’s kingdom is righton your doorstep.

New Bible Commentary, p. 998: Their messagewas to be that the kingdom of God had arrived:the sign of its presence were the mighty workswhich they would perform. When the gospel isproclaimed, the blessings of God’s rule arenear or within the grasp of all who will accept them.

When we are proclaiming God’s message weshould expect to see signs of his blessing onthe people we are talking to.

Vs. 10, 11.  When you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say, “The very dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off to your shame. Only take note of this: the kingdom of God has come close.”

When they were not made welcome and their message not received, they were to warn of divine judgement and leave.

If people reject the gospel, we should try to letthem know exactly what they’re rejecting - God’sgoodness - then let them go. It’s their decision. We must never ‘hound’ people - that will onlyput them off more. They are not rejecting us !We do not have to convince them of anything. It is God’s business to bring them back or to judge them, not ours.

V 16. ‘Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the One who sent me.’

Jesus gave authority to those he sent out. Theywent out in his name - like ambassadors- withfull authority. So does he give us when he sendsus out. We often go hesitantly. We shouldn’t!We have the same authority he gave theseventy-two disciples. We are his personalrepresentatives.

What a responsibility! What a privilege!May kasugpon, “ Sending Out...” sa pahina 4

“P AGPADUNGOG SA  T ANAN NG A  MGA  ILOY...” ___________________Henry Mota, Special Feature

“Pasidunggan mo ang imo Iloy agud nga ang inadlaw nga ginhatag saiya sang Ginuo mangin malawig”

It is said that behind every man’s success is a woman. And more oftenthan not, she is a mother. She guides and shapes the person that weare now. She cares and nurtures us from birth up to the time when wecan stand on our own. Hers is a 24-hour task using the most

inexpensive tool there is – her unsullied love.

Suno sa estorya:The earliest celebration of Mother’s Day can be tracedback to the annual spring festival that the Greeks held in honor of Rhea, the mother of many deities and to the offerings that ancientRomans made to Cybele, their Great Mother of Gods. Ceremonies in

honor of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born. Thecelebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings in the templeof Cybele lasted three days and included parades, games andmasquerades.

The roots of the modern-day celebration can be traced in the UnitedKingdom where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated long beforeMother’s Day was celebrated in the United Staes. Mother’s Day startedin 1905, when Anna Jarvis lobbied the government officials of the periodto designate a day to honor the life work of all mothers. It was not untilMay 8, 1914, that her efforts paid off. President Woodrow Wilson signeda Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday of May as Mother’sDay, a tradition that has been carried on to this day.

Ano man ang ginhalinan kag estorya sini, kita nga mga Pilipino

“For cutting the grass in our yard: P5.00.For cleaning my room this week: P10.00.For going to the store for you: P5.00.Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: P25.00.Taking out the garbage: P5.00.For getting a good report card: P25.00.For cleaning and sweeping the yard: P10.00.Total owed P85.00.

His mother looked at him standing there, and could see thememories flashing through her mind. She picked up a ballpen, turned over the paper, and wrote the following:“For 9 months I carried you while you were going inside me:NO Charge. For the nights I sat up with you and prayed for you when youwere sick: NO Charge. For all thetrying times, and all the tears that you’ve causedthrough the years: NO Charge. For wiping your nose, cooking for you, giving you toys, andclothes: NO Charge.

When the boy finished his mother’s note, there were big tearsin his eyes. He embraced his mother and said, “Mom, I sure dolove you.” And then he took the ball pen and in big letters, wrote: “PAID IN FULL.”

May isa ka Jewish nga hulubaton nga nagasiling:God cannot be everywhere so He created mothers .

Ginasiling pa gid: A mother’s love fore her children is unrivalled. Many of our great men and women have figured in our history because of the values that they imbibed and attitudes they developed through the constant guidance and nurturing of their mothers .

Sa katapusan, sa aton pagsaulog sini nga espesyal nga adlaw para saila, let us not forget to thank them for the gift of their time, sacrifice, and wisdom they so willingly share with us, and make them feel special the whole year round. There is no greater love than a mother’s love.

We pray fo all mothers – living or dead, happy or unhappy, solo or widowed.

Prayer for my Mother:

Lord Jesus, look with mercy and love upon my mother. Rewardher untiring generosity, her love, her care for me. I ask for her the same blessings you desired for your Mother: health of body, peace of soul, happiness of family, and the bountiful grace of god. Give her the richest joy of a mother’s heart, that her childmay grow in wisdom and grace before God and men. Amen.

Happy Mothers’s Day to all Moms all over the world!
