Photo Spots
Located in the eastern part of Kyoto, Okazaki is the concentrated area of temples and shrines, art museums, theaters and zoo.
Affected by the relocation of capital to Tokyo as of the Meiji Restoration in the late 19C, it was the Okazaki area where Kyoto began to take steps toward modernization. Tracking back the history, the area flourished with feudal lord residences before the Restoration and has a brilliant history, as illustrated by such institutions as the old Imperial Palace and six temples collectively known as Rikushoji ruined in 13C.Okazaki, experiencing different historical processes, continues to evolve as an unprecedented attractive area of dense facilities for promoting cultural exchange.
Okazaki’s History
Okazaki, representative tourist spot for culture and cultural interchange, is also known for the area where the modern and traditional spirits coexist. Everywhere you visit is full of picturesque spots. Let's find out the spectacular views you can't miss!

KYOTO RECOMMENDS VOL.5
Overcrowding on public transportation
Japan’s rush hour is well known, even in other countries. The trains are extremely crowded on weekday morn-ings with commuters and students. Though rush hour is not as extreme in Kyoto as it is in Tokyo or Osaka, we recommend that you nevertheless avoid public trans-portation at this time of the day. Also note that trains may be crowded on weekends, holidays, and in the tourist season, so plan your schedule with ample time to travel. Some additional notes on public transportation
A large number of people use Kyoto’s
public transportation system. If you are
carrying a backpack, hold it in front of
you so that you do not hit people
behind you with it. Also please remem-
ber to keep your voice down.
At train stations
Please refrain from taking photos on
the train platform since this can be
dangerous. Wait in line on the platform.
Also be careful when using your smart
phone while walking to avoid unneces-
sary risk. When the train you wish to
take pulls up, allow the passengers to
disembark before you board the train.
