    Astrium GEOs Satellite Fleet

Multi-mission operation is key for frequent monitoring services.Astrium GEO operates own complementary optical & Radar (SAR) satellite fleet

    TerraSAR-X & TanDEM-X (HR X-Band SAR systems) Spatial resolution modes: Spotlight: 1 m, StripMap: 3 m, ScanSAR: 18 m Coverage: up to 100 x 1.600 km today being enlarged to 200 x 1.600 km in 2013 Constellation with PAZ SAR satellite (Hisdesat) in 2014

    SPOT 4 & 5 (HR optical system) Spatial resolution: down to 2.5 m (Pan), 10 m (VIS, NIR) and 20 m (MIR) Coverage: 60 x 60 km

    Pleiades 1 A (near future constellation) Spatial resolution: 0.5 m (Pan), 2 m (VIS, NIR) Coverage: 20 x 20 km

    being continuously further enlarged

    Pleiades 1 B (2012): Specifications as Pleiades 1 A (constellation)

    SPOT 6 & 7 (2012 & 2014):1.5 m (Pan), 6 m (VIS, NIR) @ 60 x 60 km (constellation)

    TerraSAR-X 2 (2016): resolution down to 0.25 m, coverage up to 400 x 1.600 km,SAT-AIS receiver as additional payload

and has priority access to further sensor systems:

    FORMOSAT-2 (2004): 2 m (Pan), 8 m (VIS, NIR) @ 24 x 24 km

    DEIMOS-1 (2009): 22 m (VIS), @ 600 x 1000 km

    Maritime Safety & Security Challenges

Trends and drivers for increased demand for

maritime security & safety information: Increasing t ransport at sea due to globalization incl. travelling

of Northern Sea Route enabled by climate change

Increasing threats and illegal activities: e.g. piracy, terrorist attacks, smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal immigration, illegal fishing, etc.

Increasing risky exploitation of resources in the Arctic

and at high seas (remote and wide area, hostile environment, environmentally sensitive region)

Information deficit today due to: Limited monitoring range of existing sensors

(~20 -30 nm off shore, e.g. coastal radar, terrestrial AIS, etc.)

Limited number and high costs of sea- and airbornepatrol units

=> Consequence: Limited situational awarenessthroughout entire Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ: 200 nm)as well as for remote sea areas (e.g. Gulf of Aden)

Lack of monitoring means for remote and wide Arctic areas

Summary Satellite Earth Observation has the potential to close the existing gap

in maritime surveillance in regard to High seas surveillance & Early warning component

Full maritime situational awareness only through integration of complementarysurveillance means (satellites, coastal radar, AIS, air- and seaborne sensor systems, etc.)

weaknesses of single systems can be compensatedby individual strength of complementary components

EO services help to extend todays coastal surveillanceto true maritime surveillance
