Mary Jane Epp DiPiero wanted her grandsons to visit the prairie of western Kansas that was so much a part of her childhood. To fulfill her wish, 17 family members gathered in Tribune on the first weekend of October. The group was greeted on Friday by a double rainbow and a 360º sunset. They visited Tribune, the newspaper office, the Horace Greeley Museum, the White Woman creek and the excavation site of the Mammoth, found gourds, devils claws, and experienced the expanse of the buffalo grass and the prairie. GCHS Trap Team completed their fall season on October 26. Members of the fall team were Michael Lehman, Tayber Elder, Josey Schmidt, Tyler Albers, Cade Mangan, Trinity Albers, Brenton Welsh, Kashen Nelson, Bryson Bjorklund, Logan Harris and Zoey Shivers. We use the fall season to make some adjustments in various individual areas. This sometimes causes averages to drop initially before an individual is comfortable with the change. Generally we will see an improved average once the shooter gets comfortable with the change. We have a couple of shooters with an adjusted stance and a couple tried out different shotguns. We also had Brenton and Trinity join us as new members of the team. They both made a lot of progress throughout the fall. Michael was the top shooter with a 21.3 average and Josey was second with a 20.0 average. Josey was also the number two female shooter in our conference this fall. Also placing in the womens division in our conference was Zoey Shivers in sixth place. The team will be sponsoring a free will donation soup supper at the Greeley County Trap Club range on Nov. 8 starting at 5:00. For those who wish to shoot in the annual Turkey Shoot in support of the range, shooting will start as it gets dark. Hope to see you there having a bowl of soup and dessert! Martha Schlegel, Coach GCHS Trap Team Fall Season “It’s that time of year for our Annual Turkey Shoot! We are even more excited for this year than ever before. Why? We are growing and it’s fantastic! We are proud and excited for our local high school, junior high, and 4H members. Their eagerness to learn, participate, and enjoy the sport of shooting has us pumped. What some may not realize is shooting sports are another opportunity for our youth to be a part of something special. They are learning the same skill sets used in other sports--mental and physical discipline, hand/eye coordination, responsibility, confidence building, and more. With that said, we are excited and want to continue to support those interested in this sport. The Annual Turkey Shoot marks our renewal for membership. It is $30 for an individual and $50 for family (must be living under same roof, college students are the exception) and that membership is good from the date paid through the evening before our annual turkey shoot. The current rate to shoot a round of trap on a typical day is $7 for nonmembers, $5 for members, and $4.50 for students. These rates do not apply during our community events like our annual turkey shoot. We plan to get a league going as well as being open for general shoots for members and nonmembers to come out and shoot. Currently, the only way to know what is going on is by being a member and being on our calling tree. We also utilize our Facebook group for announcements and to join that, search for Greeley County Trap Club in the search bar when you are logged into your Facebook account. We hope you can come out and join us Friday, November 8th for our Annual Turkey Shoot at the Greeley County Trap Club, enter via the Landfill north of town! The Greeley County High School Team will be providing a freewill donation meal of your choice between chili or chicken and noodle. Meal begins at 5pm MDT with our shooting events to follow. Individual shoots will be $5 and prizes will be awarded to winners throughout the evening. Participants can also enter into the Big Cash Annie Oakley where 1st Place is $300, 2nd Place is $100, and 3rd Place is $50. We also have a raffle giveaway you can partake in. Grand Prize winner will get first pick of one of the following: a Weatherby Orion Sporting 12 gauge over-and-under, Digital Ear Plugs, or a flat of shells. Two decks are being used and you can purchase a card for $30 each. You DO NOT need to be present to win but must be of legal age to participate, and the Kansas Transfer Gun Laws will be followed.
