I.C.E. COMMENT
NEWS AND NOTICESYMS STEM DAY
PRESENTERS NEEDEDPresenters are needed for Yokosuka Middle School’s STEM Day on Thursday, April 27. Please call 243-5165 if you would like to volunteer.
COMMENT: I’ve talked to my neighbors about smoking, and they said it’s allowed so they’re going to do it. Why do I have to live this way? It stinks up myhouse. I hate this place so much. Why hasn’t anything been done about people smoking on balconies? This is so ridiculous.
RESPONSE: Thank you for submitting your comment via ICE. Nara Heights and Ise Heights have been
designated as nonsmoking high-rise buildings with exception to residents who are grandfathered. In smoking permitted high-rises, smokers are asked to go the extra distance to ensure they are not o ending neighbors when smoking. Nonsmokers are asked to remember that they are living in public housing and can expect to smell tobacco smoke on rare occasions. However, nonsmokers should not
be subjected to tobacco smoke on a routinebasis. Navy policy concerning smoking in military family housing is strictly enforced. Navy’s policy prohibits smoking in common spaces. A common space is de ned as any space that has uncontrolled access such as hallways, stairwells, party rooms, storage areas, lobbies, and within 20 feet of common tower entrances.
Navy policy does allow smoking within the housing units themselves. It also allows smoking on balconies. Should you smell secondhand smoke coming into your unit from a neighbor’s balcony, discuss the situation with your neighbor and request they discontinue smoking on their balconies. Smokers are encouraged to listen to their neighbors’ concerns.
