Not too long ago, saying racing and Abu Dhabi together meant tradi-tional camel races. They still draw

big audiences of locals and visitors alike in the Arabian Gulf emirate each weekend from Octo-ber to May, the best season to visit the UAE.

Today, Abu Dhabi and racing are more likely to summon images of Formula 1 racing. The eyes of the motorsport world, and the international tourism industry, are now fixing on this Emirate as it gears up to host the final round of the Formula 1™ Grand Prix season on November first.

Yas Island and Formula 1 The action will centre on Yas Island – one of more than 200 natural islands that dot the 400 kilometre-long coastline of this fascinating emirate. It is blessed by a diverse geog-raphy with magnificent beachfronts, stunning desert landscapes, cool oases, ultra-modern cityscapes, and ancient fortress enclaves. All this packaged with the diversity of desert camps and the super-luxurious setting of its signature Emirates Palace hotel.

Aldar, developer of the Yas Marina track that will host the For-mula 1 race, will commission seven hotels on Yas Island in time for the event. These include The Yas Hotel, a five-star property which will straddle the Formula 1 circuit, and is built half on land and half over the marina. A breathtaking sight!

4. Heritage Village, Abu Dhabi Breakwater

Here, visitors get a glimpse of what life was like for Abu Dhabi’s Bedouin in their desert encampment including a goat’s hair tent and a campfire. The village features a reconstruction of the old well and irrigation system, mud-brick houses, and souqs (bazaars).

5. Sir Bani Yas Island nature resort

6. Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain

This expansive fort in the centre of Al Ain city was built by Sheikh Zayed the First in the 1890s. Al Jahili was home to members of Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan family. The fort is now an active cultural centre housing a permanent exhibition on the explorer, travel writer and photographer Wilfred Thesiger who twice crossed the desert.

7. National Museum, Al Ain

This is the UAE’s oldest museum. It was built under the direction of the late UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The museum gives an overview of the country’s traditions, culture and the people who lived here 7,500 years ago: www.aam.gov.ae

8. Al Ain Oasis

Al Ain, or ‘The Garden City of the Gulf’, takes its name from nearly 3,000 acres of oasis with over 147,000 date palms. It nestles in the shadow of the Jebel Hafeet – the emirate’s highest peak. Pay a visit to the Hili Archaeological Park which features Bronze Age remains and tombs.

9. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

This is the world’s largest falcon hospital dedicated to the highest standard of treatment and care of falcons and other birds of prey with over 4,400 patients per year. Visitors can join daily guided tours of this facility and enjoy its falconry museum: www.falconhospital.com

10. The Liwa Desert

Liwa is the world’s largest sand desert with dunes rising hundreds of metres into the air. With freshwater pools and palm groves the oasis is the traditional home of the Bani Yas tribe – the Bedouin forefathers of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family. Tour operators offer exciting desert safaris into this area.

Recently, the city of Kharkiv in Eastern Ukraine welcomed a special visitor: French actress Mylène Demongeot, who came as an honoured guest of the first “Kharkiv Lilacs” International Film Festival. And it was a book by Demongeot entitled “Kharkiv Lilacs” that gave the festival its name. The book is dedicated to the dramatic life of her mother who was born in Ukraine, moved to Shanghai after the October Revolution and then ended up in France

Mylène (Marie-Hélène) Demongeot debuted as a writer thanks to the story of her Kharkiv-born mother, Claudia Trubnikova, who is described in

“Kharkiv Lilacs”. But in the world of celebrities, Demongeot is mostly known as a French film star. Her first starring role was in the film The Witches of Salem, where she performed together with Yves Montand and Simone Signoret. She is also associ-ated with being the first ever Bond girl and playing Elsa in the film version of the novel Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan. And as the guileful Milady from The Three Musketeers and the inquisitive journalist Hélène from Fantômas, Demongeot made Ukrainians fall in love with her back in the 1960s and 70s.

Lilacs FestivalGetting to the festival was easy: Demongeot flew with UIA from Paris to Kyiv and then hopped on a short flight from Kyiv to Kharkiv. Several decades and two flights later, Mylène finally saw her mother’s native land.

The first Kharkiv Film Festival kicked off with the 2007 film Beneath the Rooftops of Paris, in which Demongeot enjoyed one of her best roles. The French star also met her Ukrainian fans to present her book “Kharkiv Lilacs”, for the first time translated and published in Ukraine.

бестселера. Та в світі мистецтва уродженка Ніцци Марі-Елен Демонжо відома насамперед як зірка французького кіно. Вона дебютувала у фільмі, що вже став класикою, – “Салемські відьми”, де зіграла в ансамблі з Івом Монта-ном та Симоною Синьоре. Із Демонжо також асоціюються образ першої подружки Джеймса Бонда й екранізація повісті Франсуази Саган “Здрастуй, смутку”. А своєю підступною Міледі з “Трьох мушкеретів” і допитливою журналіст-кою Елен із “Фантомаса” вона у 1960-70-ті роки закохала в себе усіх чоловіків нашої країни.

Бузковий фестивальДо України Мілен Демонжо прилетіла рейсом МАУ з Парижа... Далі були короткий переліт Київ-Харків і перші кроки на маминій землі.

Харківський кінофестиваль відкрився кіно-драмою 2007 року “Під дахами Парижа”, де актриса зіграла одну з найкращих своїх ролей. А в 105-й день народження своєї мами на творчому вечорі французька зірка зустрілася з українськими глядачами, яким подарувала вперше перекладену і видану в Україні книгу “Харківський бузок”.

– Мадам Демонжо, чи відчуваєте ви у собі слов’янське коріння?– Так, інколи відчуваю. У молодості мені пропо-нували ролі красивих жінок, при цьому сприй-мали як нетипову француженку. Адже у 60-ті типовими вважалися невисокі брюнетки, а ми з Мариною Владі були протилежними: високі,

– Ms. Demongeot, do you feel that you have Slavonic roots?– Yes, sometimes I do. When I was young I was employed in films only as a beautiful woman and was perceived as an atypical French woman. In the 1960s, typical French actresses were short brunettes, while myself and Marina Vlady were just the opposite: tall, blond and with slightly Asian eyes. It is a pity that film directors did not manage to discover and show my Slavonic soul. And I am very sentimental: I can suddenly start crying in admiration when listening to good music. I can also be brutal and intolerant, but I try to restrain myself. – You planted a fir tree in Kharkiv after the festival. Have you ever held a shovel before?– Of course! I live in a large house, so I often work in the garden and do so with pleasure. I planted all the flowers and plants there myself.

Her Mother’s CityA few days before her trip to Ukraine, Demongeot felt unwell and even became worried that she would not be able to attend the festival. In the end, she was relieved that everything turned out all right and she was able to visit the city where her mother was born. – Ms. Demongeot, what prompted you to write a book about your mother’s life?– My mother told me her life story in the few last months of her life, when she was already severely ill. While taking care of her, I once said: “Misha – that is how I called her – you are my mother, but I know nothing about you. Don’t you think it is time you told me? Who are you, Claudia Trubnikova?” Before mom started her story, she hesitated for a long time. Eventually, when my mother finished detailing her memories, she decided that I should write a book about her life. I refused, but she insisted: “Promise me that!” and I did. It took me three years to fulfil my promise, and since then I have continued to write.– Why specifically lilacs in the title? Is that some sort of a symbol?– My mother recalled that in the spring the whole of Kharkiv was covered with blooming lilacs. I even tried to plant them in France, on the southern Porquerolles Island where I live now most of the time. Alas, lilacs do not grow there; the climate is different. I am

Мої французькі друзі не розумі-ють, чому я раптом починаю плакати від захвату, коли слухаю гарну музику. Вод-ночас я можу бути жорсткою і нетерпимою. Ця риса мені не подобається, тож намагаюсь із нею боротися. – У Харкові росте посаджена вами ялинка. Чи доводилося вам раніше брати до рук лопату?– Звичайно! Я живу у великому будинку, тож нерідко працюю в саду і роблю це з радістю. Усі квіти й рослини там посадила я сама.

– А чому в назві – саме бузок? Це якийсь символ?– Мама згадувала, що навесні Харків був наповнений бузковим цвітом. Я намагалася посадити його на острові Поркероль, що на самому півдні Франції, де я зараз переважно живу. Але на тій землі бузок не росте: там інший клімат. Я прив’язана до симво-лів і вірю, що ця квітка не проста, що вона пов’язана з пам’яттю про мою маму. Вона, на жаль, так більше ніколи й не побачила рідну землю. І ось тепер замість неї це зробила я. – Як мама ставилася до вашої кар’єри манекенниці, а потім актриси?– Мама була феміністкою і випереджала свій час. Вона зробила своє життя таким, яким хотіла, використовуючи свою єдину зброю –поєднання краси й розуму. Тому до мого бажання зробити кар’єру завдяки краcі вона ставилася з повагою. Я знаю, що вона мною дуже пишалась, хоча ніколи мені про це не говорила. Єдине, що їй не подобалося, це коли я закохувалась. “Яке марнування часу!” – обу-рювалась мама. Та це “марнування часу” не завадило мені зіграти чимало ролей у театрі й знятися в більш ніж 60 фільмах.

Мамине містоЗа кілька днів до поїздки в Україну актриса серйозно захворіла. Мілен страшенно розхвилювалася, що може не потрапити на фестиваль. І дуже тішилася, коли зрештою все склалося добре, і вона таки змогла приїхати на батьківщину матері. – Мадам Демонжо, як народилася книжка про життя вашої мами?– Свою життєву історію мама переповіла мені в останні місяці свого життя, вже тяжко хворою. Доглядаючи за нею, я одного разу сказала: “Міша (так я її називала), ти моя мати, а я нічого про тебе не знаю. Може, час розповісти про себе? Хто ти, Клавдіє Трубнікова?”. Вона довго вагалась, та зрештою розповіла свою історію. Закінчивши оповідь, мама вирішила, що я повинна написати про її долю. Я відмовляла-ся, та вона була невмолимою: “Пообіцяй мені!”. І я погоди-лась. Мені знадобилося три роки, щоб виконати обіцянку. Відтоді я пишу.

Unfortunately she never saw her native land again, so I have come in her place. – What did your mother think about your career as a model and then actress?– Mom was a feminist and ahead of her time. She made her life what she wanted it to be using her beauty and intelligence, so she respected my wish to build a career based on my beauty. I know she was very proud of me, but the only thing she did not like was when I fell in love. “What a waste of time!” she would say. However, such a “waste of time” did not prevent me from acting in the theatre and more than 60 films.

36 Quai des Orfèvres At the end of the 1990s, Demongeot took a long break in her career caused by the illness and death of her beloved husband, director and producer Marc Simenon (the elder son of French nov-elist Georges Simenon). In 2004, though, the actress regained her former glory by performing in 36 Quai des Orfèvres together with her friends Gérard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil. Demongeot was nominated for a César award for this role. – How did you get the part of Milady in The Three Musketeers?– I had a contract with the producer who launched the film version of the Alexandre Dumas novel. He had parts in other films reserved for me but I came to him and said: “I want to play Milady!” He replied: “But you are only 23!” I kept pestering him: “Dumas was writing about young people in his novel; do not make them older”. Finally the pro-ducer gave in. I love this character very much. I think there is nothing wrong in Milady’s attempt to be successful in life. Of course, Milady is a real witch, but it simply is not fair when a woman gets a stigma attached to her because she had some relationships with men. I am convinced that women are strong, persistent and have what men often lack. In the end, what would they do without us?! – How did you meet your husband? – Marc and I met in 1966 by accident. It happened in the corridor of the studio where the third film about Fantômas was being made. We fell madly in love; it was truly love at first sight. We were both absorbed with and could not get enough of each other. We both had families but without any consideration I left my first husband, and Marc, his wife. My first husband told me with irony: “You are

і продюсер поступився. Цю героїню я дуже люблю. На мою думку, немає нічого поганого в тому, що вона намагається досягнути життєвого успіху. Звичайно, Міледі – ще те стерво, але ж несправедливо, коли жінці ставлять клеймо на плече лише за те, що вона мала якісь стосунки із чоловіками. Я переконана: жінки – сильні, наполегливі й володіють тим, чого здебільшого бракує чоло-вікам. Врешті-решт, що вони без нас робили б?! – Як ви познайомилися зі своїм чоловіком? – Наша з Марком зустріч у 1966 році була цілком випадковою. Це було в кори-дорі студії, де знімався тре-тій фільм про Фантомаса. Побачивши одне одного, ми одразу шалено закохалися. Це було справжнє кохання з першого погляду, в яке ми поринули з головою. У нас вже були сім’ї, та я, не вагаю-

чись, покинула свого чоловіка, а він – свою дружину. Мій перший чоловік казав мені з іронією: “Ти просто здуріла. За тиждень повернешся назад”. Я ж відповіла: “Можливо. Та все ж варто цей тиждень прожити саме так, а не інакше”. Тиждень затягнувся на більш ніж 36 років. Я повністю “занурилась” у життя Марка, відмовившись від бага-тьох вигідних пропозицій. Іноді знімалася у фільмах Марка. Стрічку “Підпис Фуракс” 1981 р. за оповіданням батька Марка – Жоржа Сіменона, – ми навіть разом спродюсували. А десять років тому його не стало. Попри все, можу з певністю ска-зати: він був чоловіком мого життя.– Мадам Демонжо, розкажіть про ваші нинішні плани. – Нещодавно я закінчила свою четверту книгу. Вона про алкоголізм, з яким я зіткну-лась на прикладі мого чоловіка. Зараз планую знову знятися у Хінера Салеема, режи-сера, якого я дуже люблю і ціную. Саме його драмою “Під дахами Парижа” відкрили фестиваль у Харкові. Далі у моїх планах зйомки сіквела “Кемпінг-2”, адже перша його частина мала великий успіх у Франції. Восени вийде ще одна стрічка з моєю участю – “Оскар і Рожева дама” за романом Еріка-Емманюеля Шмітта. Я багато працюю і дуже цим задоволена.

Епілог…У Париж кінодіва повернулася з купою зворуш-ливих подарунків. Серед них – дивовижної краси й майстерності вишиванка у слобожанських тра-диціях, білим по білому, та приз фестивалю – вишукана кришталева статуетка у вигляді гілки квітучого бузку, загорнутого у кіноплівку. А в харківському парку імені Т.Г. Шевченка на щойно започаткованій Алеї почесних гостей кінофести-валю “Харківський бузок” залишилися посаджена Демонжо ялиночка й відбиток її долоні у бронзі. Мілен прокоментувала цю подію з гумором: “Починаючи з цього моменту я стаю безсмерт-ною, і повертатимусь сюди часто!”

29 вересня актрисі виповнюється 74. Не віриться, правда? І не треба! Вітаємо, вас, люба Мілен! Ви – неповторна!

just crazy. You will be back in a week”. I replied: “Maybe. But this is the only way I can possibly live this week”. That week lasted for more than 36 years. I completely ‘plunged’ into Marc’s life, rejected a lot of good offers and sometimes acted in his films. Ten years ago, he passed away and I can definitely say he was the man of my life.– Ms. Demongeot, what are your plans now?– I just finished my fourth book recently. It is about the alcoholism I endured on account of my first husband. I also plan to act in the next Hiner Saleem film – he is a director I love and appreciate very much. It was his drama Beneath the Rooftops of Paris that was shown at the festival in Kharkiv. Then I plan to play in the sequel Camping 2 since the original turned out to be a big success in France. In the autumn another film I am in will hit theatres, Oscar and the Lady in Pink, based on the novel by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt. I work a lot and it makes me happy.

EpilogueDemongeot returned to Paris with a bag full of heartfelt gifts. Among them an indescribably beautiful and skilfully embroidered Ukrainian vyshyvanka (blouse) with traditional white on white patterns, as well as the festival prize – a sophisticated crystal branch of blooming lilacs wrapped in filmstrip. In Kharkiv’s Taras Shevchenko Park at the newly-founded Alley of Honoured Guests of the “Kharkiv Lilacs” fes-tival, Demongeot planted a fir tree and left her handprint in bronze. She jokingly commented on this event: “Starting from this moment, I have become immortal and will return here often!”

On September 29, the actress turns 74. Congratulations to you, Mylène! You are fantastic!

Сан-Себастьян, або баскською мовою Доностіа, недарма названий канди-датом на титул Столиці європейської

культури-2016. Місто прославили літні музичні фестивалі, вуличні вистави, джазові концерти, кінофоруми. Влітку вулиці Старого міста, бари та сувенірні крамнички навколо величної площі Конституції завжди переповнені натовпами міс-цевих жителів і туристів. Сан-Себастьян неве-личкий (всього 180 тисяч жителів) та затишний, має безліч рибних ресторанчиків, декілька пля-жів, сотні барів, де подають закуски pintxos, та великий вибір дизайнерських бутиків. Останнім часом місто переживає новий бум популярності: у пік сезону в тутешніх готелях, розрахованих на 5500 гостей, вільний номер годі знайти.

Буржуазне корінняНа формування Сан-Себастьяна значною мірою вплинули дві історичні події. Одна з них – війна за незалежність Іспанії у 1808 році, – призвела до повної руйнації міста. Коли ж влітку 1845 р. іспанська королівська родина вирішила перет-ворити Сан-Себастьян на свою літню дачу, місто знову розквітло. Місце монархи обрали дійсно чудове: місто захищене горою Урґулл з боку узбережжя, горою Улія зі сходу, горою Адарра з південного боку та горою Іґельдо з заходу.

До 1920 р. Сан-Себастьян вважався неофі-ційною літньою резиденцією іспанського уряду. Дивовижний палац Мірамар височіє на кручі над морем; міські радники проводять зустрічі у колишньому казино; грайлива модерністська архі-тектура досі прикрашає молодші райони міста.

Чудові літні дніЗануритися у жваве нічне життя старого міста найкраще на просторій площі Конституції (Plaza de la Constitución), оточеній галереями будинків, яким по 150 років. Раніше свою майстерність тут демонстрували горді тореро, а натовп спостерігав за видовищем з численних балконів.

During the day, heat radiates in all directions. Those who can, take refuge in the sea. Head towards the surreal former Royal Club Náutico built in 1929, featuring a large, white yacht lodged in its concrete sea wall. In front of it, a wooden pier on iron stilts juts out high above the beach onto the sea. When the evening sun gilds the beach, young couples make themselves comfy sitting on the planks of the pier, and before the sun disap-pears behind Monte Urgull, it turns the white Belle Époque façades of the city pink. Mount Urgull is worth a visit in itself: the statue of Jesus on the sum-mit provides a splendid view of the bay, Old Town and harbour.

San Sebastián, also known as Donostia in the Basque language, and a candidate for the title of Capital of European Culture 2016, is a city famous for its summer festivals, street theatre, jazz, film scene and all

sorts of cultural events. In summer, crowds of locals and tourists fill the lanes of the Old Town, near and inside bars and souvenir shops on the Calle Mayor, or its heart, the beautiful Plaza de la Constitución. The city is quite small (180,000 inhabitants) and cosy, featuring many fish restaurants, tons of pintxos bars and a choice of designer clothes shops. In recent years San Sebastián has experienced a new boom, with 5,500 beds available in local hotels, and all booked in high season.

Bourgeois RootsTwo events in the past continue to have an effect on San Sebastián even today. First, the Spanish War of Independence in 1808 destroyed the city. Second, in the summer of 1845, the Spanish royal family decided to spend their summers in San Sebastián. They picked a wonderful location, as the city is well protected by Mount Urgull on the seashore, Mount Ulia extending east, Mount Adarra rising far to the south, and Igeldo, overlooking the bay from the west.

Until 1920, San Sebastián was considered the unofficial summer resi-dence of the Spanish government. The Miramar Palace stands atop a cliff overlooking the sea, the city’s councillors hold meetings in what used to be the casino, and playful “Modernismo” architecture still decorates the newer parts of the city.

San Sebastián has real character: a small farmer’s market on Sunday morn-ings in the Ondarreta Beach, a student bar where musicians sing Latino rock, and, of course, its nightlife. The disco La Rotonda is in the former royal bath house, though the best nightlife happens on the streets and squares of the Old Town. But the wildest thing here is the Atlantic Ocean, grumbling the city’s ornate walls.

Perfect Summer DaysTo dive into the throbbing life of the Old Town, begin at the Plaza de la Con-stitución. The spacious square is framed with arcades running under houses that are more than 150 years old. Proud toreros used to show off their skills at the Plaza and the numbered balconies served as boxes from which people could watch the spectacle.

Once here, you must experience La Movida – a Spanish pub-crawl. It goes like this: you sip a glass of wine here and there, nibble on pintxo (an appetizer of bread and various toppings), go for a coffee and a slice of almond tart in a pastry shop that stays open until 1:00am, and then move on to the next bar.

empty and the city bars and restaurants fill up. With a glass of wine and a few pintxos, you can just let yourself drift from day into night. Pintxo literally means “skewer” and these skewers are laden with delicacies. The pintxos are divine: just imagine a combination of goat’s cheese with tuna carpaccio and wild berry preserves or aubergine puree with slices of apricot on a slice of crisp bread. Every evening at seven o’clock, chefs and waiters at the bar Astelena pile the counter with two layers of pintxos. With their vir-tuoso creations, chefs and barkeepers try to preserve San Sebastián’s reputation as a European gourmet stronghold. If including

Juan Mari Arzak, a chef for more than 40 years at the 3-Michelin-star Arzak restaurant, is one of the most successful in his star-collecting guild. His fans claim that Juan Mari Arzak invented Basque cuisine. A taste of his food makes most agree that he deserves every one of his Michelin stars.

Budget foodies will be happy to note that talented young chefs also offer pleasures for the palate at a fraction of the cost. For the last three years, young Daniel Lopez has been cooking in his restaurant Kokotxa right next to the church of Santa María. Lopez scores bonus points for his handyman skills. He roasts the shoulder of lamb for nine hours at exactly 80 degrees, making the meat tender and juicy – simply heavenly.

Beaches for EveryoneThere is plenty to experience in San Sebastián beyond the main attractions, but the cherry on top is, of course, the city’s fine golden sand beaches facing the Bay of Biscay.

The Ondarreta has the calmest water and is especially popular with families. You might want to look at the Ondarreta from above: just take a wooden funicular built in 1912 to travel to the Monte Igueldo hanging over the beach. Alternatively, walk all the way to the end of the beach and enjoy the magnificent Peine del Viento (Wind’s Comb) sculpture by Eduardo Chillida.

In front of Ondarreta is San Sebastián’s main beach, the 1,340-metre long Playa de la Concha. Its name means “Shell Beach” because the bay is shaped like a large sea-shell. Santa Clara Island (a short boat ride from the city) protects the beach and its Belle Époque façades from high waves. The Atlantic reveals its true power at the Playa de Zurriola on the northern side of the mouth of the nearby Urumea River. The waves crash on the shores here with thunderous force – a veritable surfer’s paradise! The Atlantic gives them what they want, and sometimes a bit more.

A six-kilometre-long promenade flanks the beaches. At the Playa de la Concha the boardwalk changes into a catwalk and then into a stage for Andalusian flamenco danc-ers and musicians. At 3:00 the harbour is filled with Basque rock bands. The atmos-phere is mesmerising: a harbour festival with waves of rocking fans amid smoke clouds from grilled sardines. Summers are long in San Sebastián. Enjoy!

tory and architecture. The river itself is emblematic of the very heart of French life and a trip along the Loire with beautiful towns such as Orléans, Tours, Chinon, Angers and Nantes implies wine tasting and fine dining that immerse visitors in its histori-cal past. So, make a plan, jump on a bike and go! The length of any trip can vary from 20 to 800 kilometres. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants along the cycling paths which makes it easy to find a place to stay over-night or have a meal almost anywhere. The Royal Château de Blois (Blois): www.chateaudeblois.fr; +33 254 90 3333. The gate to the Loire Valley is the Château de Blois, located 1.5 hours by train from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. For four centuries, this building used to serve as the residence of French kings. The castle, with its clearly evident Renaissance architecture, was built in the 17th century and was somewhat restored two centuries later. In the summer, visitors can enjoy fencing performances and music and light shows describ-ing the major events of the castle’s history. The shows take place every evening until the end of September, so do not miss this truly unforgettable sight!

At those times, sci-entists and artists used to live in the castle, among them Leonardo da Vinci, who was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert adjoining the châ-teau. The royal grounds house exclusive furniture collections in Gothic and Renaissance style. At the end of the castle excursion, take a walk in the beautiful gardens, which offer a splendid view over the Loire.

Clos Lucé Château (Amboise): www.vinci-closluce.com; +33 247 57 0073.This mansion was the last home of the great Leonardo da Vinci. Now, Clos Lucé is a memorial dedicated to the art and numerous talents of the Tuscan artist. Invited by French King François the First, da Vinci lived in Clos Lucé for the last three years of his life. Just imagine: the château has preserved the bedroom, kitchen and cabinet of the great da Vinci (and 40 of his inventions) as it was when he lived there!

Leonardo da Vinci Park has a landscape with pathways telling about the genius of the great artist. It includes the sources of his inspi-ration and 16 giant machines that actually work and 32 transparent canvasses 3х4 metres high representing sketches, drawings and paint-ings by da Vinci.

Саме в цих стінах вирішувалась свого часу доля Франції і Британії. У замку збе-рігаються численні гобелени, меблі й предмети мистецтва епохи Середньовіччя і влаштовуються інсценізації тогочасного королівського весілля!

Фортеця Шинон (Шинон): www.forteresse-chinon.fr, +33 247 93 1345.У Шиноні туристів зустрічають актори, переодягнені на придворних дам і кавалерів, що одразу налаштовує гостей на історичний лад. Шинон – одна з найдавніших фортець Франції, збудована у 945 році графом Теобальдом І де Блуа в період правління династії Валуа. Історія фортеці Шинон тісно пов’язана з подіями столітньої війни. У 1429 р. у цих стінах відбулась перша зустріч Жанни д’Арк і короля Карла VII. Саме тут орлеанській діві вдалося переконати монарха виступити проти своїх супротивників і дати відсіч британській армії.

У XVII столітті Шинон перейшов у власність кардинала Рішельє, котрий добряче поруйнував тронну залу та деякі будівлі, що були йому не до вподоби. Згодом замок було частково відновлено за старовинними кресленнями.

Найбільша чернеча обитель Європи вражає не лише своїми розмірами, а й монархами, котрі знайшли тут свій останній прихисток. У величній монастир-ській церкві ХІІ ст. спочивають Річард Левове Серце, Елеонора Аквітанська та Генріх ІІ, причому поліхромні надгробні скульптури є портретними копіями похованих. Фонтевро заснував у 1001 році Робер д’Арбриссель, який запрова-див правила прийому до абатства і чоловіків, і жінок, і бідних, і багатих, за що мусив вислухати чимало докорів. Сьогодні абатство – це відомий Культурний центр, де проводяться концерти, семінари і виставки.

Замок-музей бретонських герцогів (Нант): www.chateau-nantes.fr, +33 251 17 4948. Наша остання зупинка луарського маршруту знаходиться неподалік Атлан-тичного океану. Замок XV ст. зведено в історичному серці Нанта – колиш-нього індустріального порту, який з часом перетворився на величезне місто заходу Франції. У 32-х кімнатах герцогського замку розташувався Музей історії Нанта, оснащений сучасними мультимедійними інсталяціями. Крім 850 історичних предметів тієї епохи, замок-музей відомий розкішною колек-цією сучасного мистецтва.

In the walls of these cas-tles the destiny of France and Britain during the time of the Hundred Years’ War was decided. The château features an outstanding collection of well-preserved tapes-

Chinon Fortress (Chinon): www.forteresse-chinon.fr; +33 247 93 1345.Chinon greets visitors with actors dressed as court nobility recreating a historical atmosphere beginning with their first step in the castle. Chinon is one of the oldest fortresses in France, having been built by Theobald I, Count of Blois, in 954 A.D. The history of the fortress is connected with the Hundred Years’ War: it was here in 1429 that Joan of Arc and Charles VII first met. The Maid of Orléans man-aged to convince the King to stand against the British and they succeeded.

In the 17th century, Chinon passed to Cardinal de Richelieu, who made considerable changes to the throne room and other premises. Later, the fortress was partially restored according to the original design.

Fontevraud Abbey (Fontevraud): www.abbaye-fontevraud.com; +33 241 51 7141. The biggest house of prayer in Europe inspires awe due to its size, as it does with the monarchs who found their last sanctuary here. The big 17th century monastery church is the burial site of King Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son King Richard the Lionheart. Notably here, the polychrome tomb sculptures are the portrait copies of buried kings. Fontevraud was founded in 1001 A.D. by the itinerant reformist preacher Robert of Arbrissel, who introduced new rules for enter-ing the Abbey and accepting men and women, rich or poor. Today the Abbey is a well-known cultural centre where concerts, seminars and exhibitions are held.

The Castle of Dukes of Brittany (Nantes): www.chateau-nantes.fr; +33 251 17 4948. The last stop on our trip along the Loire is close to the Atlantic Ocean. The castle was built in the historical centre of Nantes, formerly an industrial port that over time became a major city in western France. Featuring a number of multimedia installations, it covers 32 rooms of the 15th century former Ducal palace, with displays of more than 850 historic objects in a contemporary layout.

The trip is now over and our legs should ache nicely after several days of pedalling. The vistas will create enough memories to fill hundreds of megabytes of video and photos. And there is still an unexplored section between Blois and Orléans plus areas further to the east. See you in the Loire Valley next year, perhaps?
