    Mrs B McCraw & Mr D Gordon

    Our Focus This Term

    Topic

Our topic continues to be The Victorians. This term we will

be focusing on the theme of Leisure. A visit to the

London Transport Museum will kick off an investigation

on how new forms of transport opened up opportunities for

holidays for ordinary people. We will investigate how

Victorians used to pass the time and consider how their

hobbies differ from our own. We will use our maths lessons

to present our findings in a data enquiry and we will

develop our mapping skills by creating an online map to

    show what we have discovered.

Science and DT will build on our knowledge of Victorians

as inventors of two of our favourite things as we attempt to

design and make our own torches and ice lollies! These

practical experiments are part of our work on circuits and

    conductors and solids and liquids.

    Literacy

We have already done some work on poetry, which we will

be continuing for one more week. We will be showcasing

some of our work on a Poetry Blog on Fronter. (Please see

me if you are still having problems accessing Fronter athome.) We will also be working on our creative writing

skills as we tackle a short story and we will try our hand at

writing explanation texts to explain our inventions, both in

science and DT and on Kite Day.

    Numeracy

This term we will be extending our data enquiry skills and

looking in more detail at fractions and decimals. Mr

Gordon will continue with the mental maths test every

Monday as this is proving successful in improving rapid

recall of times tables. Please help your child practise their

    times tables at home.

    Kite Day

    On Tuesday 28th

June every child in the school

will make a kite. Year 4 will use this

opportunity to do a practical science

experiment with the aim of finding out how air

can be used as a force. Some time during the

week we will take our kites on to Streatham

Common to fly them (dependant on the wind!)

    Art & Music

Children will create art on the theme ofjourneys this term. It will involve

    experimenting with various methods and

making choices of what to use in a final

creation. At the end of this term all children

will also take part in Arts Week, which

promises to be full of exciting and creative

    activities.

Children need to bring in their violin every

Friday for their Music Trax Strings lesson.

We have been invited to take part in an exciting

    concert on Monday 4th

    July at the Queen

Elizabeth Hall on the Southbank. Children willplay the pieces they have been learning in class

and will sing a song called Summer Reggae.

More details will follow and you are all invited

to attend. Please support your child in

rehearsing their violin and song for this

    concert.

    SRE (Sexual and Relationship Education)

This term we will be learning about Puberty.

The sessions are ageappropriate and will be

led by Mrs McCraw. If you wish to discuss the

content of the lessons or have any concerns

please do not hesitate to contact me.

Year 4 Trip to London Transport Museum:

    We need YOU!

    On Weds 29th

June I plan to take year 4 to the

London Transport Museum in Covent Garden to

take part in a workshop on Victorian transport. The

children will also be able to visit all the exhibits in

the museum. We need at least 1 parent to volunteer

to come on this trip in order to have enough adults

for the trip to take place. It promises to be fun! If

you are able to help please let Mrs McCraw know

    as soon as possible.

    Supporting Your Child At Home

    Reading and Spellings

    Library and Book Corner:

Our library day is Wednesday on this day children can

borrow books from our school library. If they have books

at home that belong to school please make sure that they

bring these back as they cannot borrow more than 3

without returning those they have at home. Similarly, I

have been letting children take books home from our book

corner to help them with their homework but we now have

quite a few missing books. Please can you check at home

and put any books that belong to school in their book bags. Many thanks.

    Reading Book & Reading Journal

There has been an improvement in the amount of children

reading to their parents and carers which I hope we can

    keep up.

Please ensure that your child reads to you or another adult

every weekand that you leave a comment in their reading

journal. Please comment on how well they read, their

enjoyment of the book or their understanding of the book.

You can also use the journal as a way of letting us know

any concerns you may have with regard to your child andthe reading scheme.

If you have any questions about how to support your

childs reading or would like some suggestions of

questions to ask them about what they have read, please

    contact Mrs McCraw.

    Class Novel

Our class novel this term continues to be Danny Champion

of the World by Roald Dahl.

HomeworkThe Victorians Project was a great success! Thank you for

your support. Childrens work will be showcased on a

display for the remainder of this term.

    Spellings

Please support your child in learning their spellings each

week. The spellings set either support the children with

words they are using in class or help them to learn

common letter patterns within words. We have a spelling

star display for every child who gets full marks and Id

love to find that I have to make it bigger to fit all the

    names on it!

Year 4 Homework Club is on Friday.
