Reading Books I would ask that children continue to bring their book bags to school on a daily basis. Books from the school reading scheme will be changed weekly on Tuesdays.  Please continue to listen to your child read on a daily basis, asking them questions about the book and their response, before signing the reading  journal. Talking about the book and reading to your child, as well as them reading to you really supports their progress in reading. It helps them develop an understanding of the organisation of stories, and of characters and events. It also provides an excellent starting point for their writing. We will also be doing this in school as part of their literacy units. Our class novel will be ‘Fantastic Mr Fox.’  Immanuel and St. Andrew CE Primary School Year 2O Class Bulletin Term 1 September 2011 Dear%Parents%/%Carers,% It%is%great%to%be%back%at%school! %% We%hav e%all%settled%in%well%and%have%had%a% good%first%week%back.%%The%class%have%got%off%to%an%excellent%start%and%are% learning%the%new%routines.%%I%have%been%really%impressed%by%their%enthusiasm% for%learning.% This % coming% week% we% will% be% sending% homework% home% and% changing% reading%books.%%We%will%also%be%starting%our%PE%lessons.%% I%am% glad % to% have % met% yo u%all % and%I%hope% that % we% will % be % able % to% work % toge ther % to% support% the% children% throughout % the% year.% % If% you% have% any% questions,%queries%or%concerns,%please%do%not%hesitate%to%contact%me. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% % Hannah%Owen%% % % [email protected] .%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% % %%%%%%!  Indoor PE will be on Tuesday mornings. Phonics and Spellings Again this year children across KS1 will be

split up into phonics groups to best suit

their current phonics understanding. This

means that some children will go to

another class every morning for the

phonics lesson and their spellings will be

set by their phonics teacher.

Spelling tests across KS1 will be on

Fridays during the phonics lesson. Thechildren’s spelling results will be noted in

their phonics books.

Literacy: In literacy we will be starting with

some poetry before moving onto a narrative

writing unit. In poetry we will be looking at

developing our own ideas. As part of the

narrative unit we will be reading stories

which have familiar settings such as Six

Dinner Sid and On the Way Home. We will

be focusing on writing ‘golden’ sentences.

We will also be working on adding descriptive

detail to our writing in this unit.Numeracy: By the end of Year 2 children

are expected to be able to recall all addition

and subtraction facts for each number to at

least 10, all pairs with totals to 20 and all

pairs of multiples of 10 with totals up to

100. Many children in the class are at

different stages of knowing these facts so

if they are already secure with these then I

will be challenging them with larger

calculations.

I would be very grateful if you could

regularly support your child with learning

all number facts with the total of 10 or

less e.g. 2 + 5, 6 +3, 8 + 2 etc. This is

so important as it provides them with an

excellent and necessary grounding. Their

confidence with these facts will allow

them to make links with larger mental

calculations such as 20 + 50 or 60 + 30

when they are ready for this.

This term we will be covering the topics ofplace value, addition, subtraction, shape and

money

Topic – Amazing People!

This topic will explore different people and

what makes them or made them amazing. We

will be looking at significant people from the

past and present day. We will also explore

how portraits can tell a story about these

people. We will also be considering how we

can stay fit and healthy. We will be using

ICT throughout this topic to do research

and resent work.

PSHCE – New Beginnings Children will be exploring what it is to

belong to a community, considering how to

make people feel welcome and support

others.

R.E. – David

In R.E. we will be learning about the story

of David, exploring some of the amazing

things which he did in his life.

P.E.

Outdoor - Children will learn a variety of

skills to help them with ball games. They

will learn how to send a range of objectsusing a pulling, slinging and pushing action.

They will play competitively in a small tag

games, selecting different ways of finding

space & avoiding the ball.

Indoor – In gymnastics the children will

begin to learn different ways of

transferring their body weight, using

different movements. They will also be

considering different ways of linking these

movements together.
