DÉJÀ VINGT ANS!

The Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies first saw the light of day in the spring of 1976, seven years after the forma- tion of our Association (CALACS/ACELAC). With this issue, we are therefore immensely proud to celebrate 20 years of publication.

This has been 20 years of great achievements. Year after year, some of the best scholars from Canada and abroad have used this venue to disseminate their ideas and results on every possible subject in the social sciences and the humanities, in either English, French, Span- ish or Portuguese! This is a very unique journal, not only in Canada, but in the République des lettres as well.

True, we have had to face the hurdles with which all small schol- arly journals are confronted. Unfortunately, this has resulted in delays in our production schedule. This issue, for instance, is a 1996 issue, published in early 1997. But with the publication of three issues over the past six months (including two double issues), we are catching up! And the quality of our product is steadily improving, in tandem with the growing interest for Latin American and Caribbean studies in this country.

More than ever before, the deepening of our understanding of, and relations with, Latin America and the Caribbean is exciting and neces- sary. The region is more than an ever-closer economic partner. It repre- sents an inspiring laboratory where the central questions of our times are debated with unparalleled creativity. Learning more about Latin America and the Caribbean is learning more about ourselves and about

the human experience. I would like to think that the CJLACS will help us do just that for decades to come.

La Revue canadienne des études latino-américaines et caraïbes a vu le jour au printemps de 1976, sept années après la création de notre association (ACELAC/CALACS). Avec la publication de ce numéro, nous sommes donc très fier de célébrer notre vingtième anniversaire.

Ces deux dernières décennies ont été couronnées de succès. An- née après année, les meilleurs spécialistes en sciences sociales et en lettres, en provenance du Canada ou de l'étranger, ont choisi la RCELAC pour publier le fruit de leur travaux, que ceux-ci soient rédigés en français, anglais, espagnol ou portuguais! Notre revue est non seulement unique au Canada, mais aussi, à bien des égards, dans la République des lettres.

Cela dit force est d'admettre que, tout au long de ce parcours, nous avons éprouvé toute la gamme des difficultés qui assaillent les revues savantes à faible tirage. Cela a notamment introduit de fâcheux délais dans notre horaire de publication. Ainsi, ce numéro (1996) apparaît au début de 1997. En revanche, avec la publication de trois numéros au cours des derniers six mois (dont deux numéros double), nous sommes clairement sur la bonne voie! Et la qualité de notre revue s'améliore, pendant que l'intérêt pour l'Amérique latine et la région des Caraïbes au Canada va croissant.

Plus que jamais, l'approfondissement de nos connaissances sur - et de nos liens avec - cette région représente une tâche urgente et passionnante. Car l'Amérique latine et les Caraïbes ne constituent pas seulement un partenaire économique de plus en plus important. La région s'offre surtout comme un véritable laboratoire où les problèmes centraux de notre époque inspirent des débats et des initiatives d'une grande créativité. Pour nous, Canadiennes et Canadiens, connaître davantage l'Amérique latine et les Caraïbes, c'est aussi se connaître un peu mieux. J'ose croire que la RCELAC nous épaulera dans cette entreprise pour encore bien des décennies.
