1.3 Ceremony and festival
1.3.1 Read the article and answer the question of your friend from Japan.
Wai Kru (Paying Respect toTeachers)
Wai Kru ceremony is a special occasion where pupils, university and college students
pay respect to their teachers in order to gain merit and fortune. This ceremony bring them
luck in their studies throughout the academic year.
The date is determined by each institution, but it is always held on a Thursday. A
typical Wai Kru Ceremony starts with the offerings. which are prepared one or two days before
the ceremony. The offerings consist of flowers, candles and joss sticks arranged
on phan (traditional Thai pedestal led trays).
The offerings of the flowers used in the arrangement are symbolic. Dok Ma Khue
(eggplant flower) stands for respect because when the tree is blooming its branches bend
down in the same way a student pays respect to their teacher. Ya Praek (Bermuda grass)
stands for patience or perseverance because although the grass looks wilted it is still very
much alive. Khao Tok (popped rice) stands for discipline because the rice is placed in a pan
together and heated up to become popped rice. The Dok Kem has the same name as the
Thai word for needle. So it means the student will be sharp-witted and brainy.
On the day, disciples will organize a procession
with all offerings and auspicious trays and present
those necessities, on ancient stands to their master.
The master then continues the ceremony by inviting all
divinities to receive the offerings
17
The master chants blessing to students and flowers before the infinities. Finally, the
master will conduct the wrist Binding Ceremony for good fortunate to all students.

Michiko : Hello, my name is Michiko from Japan. I just saw the ceremony. Could you
give me some information?
You : Yes.
Michiko : What is Wai Kru?
You : It’s a ceremony of paying respect to the teachers.
Michiko : When does Wai Kru take place?
You : It’s always held on a Thursday.
Michiko : Why do the students offer the flowers –not roses or lotus?
You : The flowers used are symbolic.
Michiko : How many kinds of flowers do the student use?
You : 4 kinds of flowers: Dok Ma Khue (eggplant flower), Ya Praek (Bermuda grass), Khao
Tok (popped rice), Dok Kem
Michiko : Would you like to tell the meaning of them?
You : 1. Dok Ma Khue (eggplant flower) stands for respect because when the tree is
blooming its branches bend down in the same way a student pays respect to
teacher
2. Ya Praek (Bermuda grass) stands for patience or perseverance because although the
30
grass looks long life.
3.Khao Tok (popped rice) stands for discipline because the rice is placed in a pan
together and heated up to become popped rice.
4.The Dok Kem has the same name as the Thai word for needle. So it means the
student will be sharp and clever
