DVB started with the aim of delivering DTV services to the home via satellite, cable & terrestrial networks.
The consumer was (and is) also served by fixed and wireless telecom networks.
DVB also needed to enable interactive television. Thus the MHP middleware specification was developed.
Further enabling iTV was the development of return channel specifications using the telecom networks as well as satellite, cable and terrestrial networks.
