PREFACE
Interest in European art has existed in Georgia since ancient times, proven by the abundance of unique artefacts dating back to antiquity. De-spite hard times in the Middle Ages, this interest did not wane; preserved in the Museum of History and Ethnography of Svaneti, a Venetian Cross created for the church altar in the XIII-XIV centuries is a perfect illustration of this fact.
European, more precisely Western European, art became popular in Georgia in the late XVIII c. after the establishment of active cultural ties with Europe through the Russian Empire. During this time, representatives of the Georgian nobility traveled frequently to Europe, saw and liked the traditions, culture and art of the West, and attempted to bring them back to their homeland.
The collection of Western European art in Georgia was created over time in such a way. In this respect, the Dadiani dynasty is the most impor-tant contributor, as their palace in Zugdidi was not only a residence for the governors, but also a major hub of Georgian national culture where a number of unique collections were gathered.
The elder Prince David Dadiani (1812-1853) collected works of Geor-gian and European art and ethnographical objects, filling his library with numerous manuscripts and paleographic replicas. Like the European mon-archs and noblemen, David conducted archaeological excavations in his province, confirmed by the historical notes of Marie-Fรฉlicitรฉ Brosset.
In 1847, the scientist, Marie Brosset visited the Dadiani Palace and wrote: โIn David Dadianiโs study, I saw a remarkable collection of antiqui-ties. The Prince is highly educated, having collected hundreds of Roman and Greek coins, the majority of which were found in the Nokalakevi exca-vations from the Archaeopolis of the Laz people.โ
The graphic sketches of the rooms of the Samegrelo Queen Ekater-ine Chavchavadze-Dadiani (1816-1882) are fortunately in Georgia today, having been returned from Tsarskoye Selo (ะฆะฐฬััะบะพะต ะกะตะปะพฬ) in Russia. The author of the drawings is renowned watercolor painter Eduard Hau (1807-1887), who often painted the halls of the Hermitage and Winter Palace. The master was amazed by the splendor of Ekaterineโs rooms, which were plentiful in items brought by the Queen to Georgia from abroad. Along with the paintings of these are preserved sketches of furniture and the inventory of the Dadiani Palace. The furniture was created in Russia or Europe, proven so by Russian and French inscriptions. Photographs of the interior of the Dadiani Palace from the XIX century also give us an idea of the interior decoration of the time. The walls of the palace were painted in a European style and portraits were of that same style.
The distinguishing artwork of the Dadiani collection is a portrait of Ekaterine Chavchavadze-Dadiani (1816-1882) (pp.42-43) by renowned German painter and portraitist Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873). He was especially good at creating womenโs portraits, in which he invested coquetry and grace.
Later, Ekaterine sent the painting from France to Georgia to Dimitri Kipiani, who was supervising her lands and possessions. In a letter of re-ply, preserved in the archive of the museum, Dimitri Kipiani says:
โGracious and excellent Queen! This morning I received one large wrapped parcel. I opened it and saw your face. I assure you that you could not give me a better reward. I know every time I look at this face, my sor-row and grief will disappear. I will keep this painting always. The author Mr. Winterhalter is a true master. Your devoted Dimitri Kipiani. 22 January 1865โ.
The portrait is painted with bright colors and was supposedly created in Paris or Wiesbaden (about 1865). The Queen of Samegrelo is presented in ceremonial attire with a scarlet sash and insignia of the Order of Saint Catherine, given to her in 1856 on the coronation day of Emperor Alexan-der II. At the same time, the then-Princess Ekaterine was appointed as a lady-in-waiting of the Imperial Russian Court (ะัะธะดะฒะพัะฝะฐั ะะฐะผะฐ) of the Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. The insignia of this honor is also depicted by the painter.
On the left shoulder of the Queen is a blue ribbon of the Order of St. Andrew and the bronze medal of St. George, given to her for participating in the Russo-Turkish War of 1853-1855. The Queenโs chest bears the eight-

painted star with rays of the Order of Catherine, which was considered one of the highest state awards in the Russian Empire.
The portrait of Nikoloz Dadiani (1847-1903), son of Ekaterine Chavchavadze-Dadiani, was painted by an unknown, and possibly Euro-pean, artist (p.44). Study of this work has revealed new information about the life of Niko Dadiani. Although the author of the painting is unknown, it was likely painted no later than 1889, when soldiers were allowed to wear several orders at the same time. Under the collar of Niko is a third-degree Order of Saint Vladimir, and other fourth-degree orders are shown on his chest. Depicted in the Flรผgel-adjutant uniform, the Princeโs shoulders are adorned with Colonel Epaulettes. His blue trousers indicate that he served in the Leib Guard (The Russian Imperial Guard) cavalry, in the Hussar regiment.
Among different orders there is an Order of Saint Anna and a medal for participation in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. On his sword we see a fourth-degree sword-knot of Saint Anna for loyalty.
Artistic and historical analysis of the portrait has given us the oppor-tunity to clarify the details of the military career of Niko Dadiani, which indicates to the great historical value of the depiction.
The portrait of Andria Dadiani is also painted by an unknown European artist (p.45). Andria Dadiani (1850-1910) was the first Georgian profes-sional chess player and his name is well known in the world of chess. In 1874, having graduated from the Heidelberg University (Faculty of Law), Andria enrolled in the Leib Guard in Tsarskoye Selo. Five years later, he began working in the Russian Embassy in Rome. The portrait was likely painted exactly at that time, and he may well have taken this work from Italy to his palace in Kiev. The last years of Andriaโs life were spent in Kiev Palace. It is possible that after his death, Salome Murat (Andriaโs sister) took the painting to Zugdidi.
In the exhibition of the Dadiani Palace, one of the most interesting art-works is the portrait of Napoleon I (1769-1821) (p.55), where the Emperor of France is presented with a distinguished appearance.
One might question how the canvas came to be in Zugdidi. On May 18, 1868, Salome Dadiani (daughter of David and Ekaterine Dadiani) married Achille Charles Louis Napoleon Murat (1847-1895), grandson of Joachim-Napolรฉon Murat (1767-1815) and an adjutant of Napoleon III (1808-1873). In 1870, after the defeat in the French-Prussian War, Achille went to Same-grelo and took with him property from the French Imperial House. It is likely that the above-mentioned portrait of Napoleon I was taken to Same-grelo during this time.
The painting is a copy of the world-renowned famous portrait of Na-poleon painted by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) in 1812 (the original version is preserved in the National Gallery of Art in Washington). The difference between these two works is that on Jacques-Louis Davidโs can-vas, the emperor is depicted from head-to-toe, whereas in the โZugdidiโ version, we see only his head and torso.
The portrait of Commander-in-Chief and General Peter Bagration (1765-1812) (p.56) was painted by Salvatore Tonci in 1802. Tonci created the work based on the gravure of Joseph Sounders, an engraver of the Hermitage Royal Court. Sounders released numerous black and white engravings in 1805. One of the portraits of Bagration, painted based on the gravure mentioned above, is preserved in the collection of Russian scientist Peter Romanov. In this version, although the colours of Peterโs uniform are correctly determined, as confirmed by his military service paper (Russian Central Military-Historical Archives, fund 489, description 2, โ.2-4, pp. 65-70), the artist seems not to have understood how the uniform and orders of Bagration looked, or perhaps was ill-informed, as there are numerous errors in the depiction on the canvas.
In 1802, Peter Bagration was the head of the Russian Imperial Guard, officially known as the Leib Guard, which in 1806 was transformed into a regiment. Therefore, Peter would have worn the uniform of this regiment, which was light green with a golden-threaded orange collar.
In the portrait, the artist painted a blue uniform instead of light green. For the collar, he used red instead of orange; the ribbon of the Order is de-picted as blue, which corresponds to the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, however, this sash needed to be on the left instead of the right shoulder.
In 1802, Bagration received a sash of the Order of Saint Alexander แแแแแแแแแแก แกแแกแแฎแแ. แแแขแแ แแแ แ. XX แกแแฃแแฃแแDadiani Palace. Interior. XX c.

Nevsky, and in 1809, the badge of the Order. At the time he had already been made General and would have been wearing the relevant uniform. So, as mentioned above, the military uniform of Bagration is incorrect-ly depicted in the portrait, although the Orders are correctly painted on his coat. On his collar is the first-degree Order of Saint Anna (red cross adorned with gold), under which we see the second-degree Austrian Mili-tary Order of Maria Theresa (presented incorrectly, as, in fact, the Order was white). Below these Orders is the Sardinian Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus (first-degree) next to which the painter depicted the fourth-degree Order of St John of Malta, which Bagration received in 1794 for his courage in battles against the Poles.
The portrait of Peter Bagratoni in the Dadiani collection was painted around 1805. Based on the gravure of Saunders and Tonci, because of the technique employed, this work is one of the most unique portraits of Bagration.
In Georgia, the collection of Western European art was made up not only of paintings brought from Europe, but also of artworks created by European painters during their time in Georgia.
In 1857, during the coronation of King Alexander II in Saint Petersburg, the Emperor personally met the Dadiani family. From the Emperor, Prince Niko Dadiani, the heir to the Samegrelo throne, received an album of gold and silver as a gift. The album was exceptional because it encompassed paintings, landscapes and Caucasian characters created by famous art-ists. The album also included a collection of Friedrich Frischโs paintings.
A master of monumental paintings and battle scenes, Friedrich Frisch primarily worked in Darmstadt and then in Russia as an imperial court painter. Frisch accompanied Alexander II and his retinue during their jour-ney around the Caucasus, where he reflected all the most remarkable events on paper. Primarily, these papers were sketches, based on which the painter later created five large canvases.
Many Caucasian urban and rural landscapes have been preserved through Frischโs art, the majority of which are now kept at the Dadiani Palace.
โMagnificent! Diverse! Even Paris would be jealousโฆostensibly, one can meet the French style couple with beautiful modern society in your silent and remote streets. Here, one can feel a particular comfort and relaxation. You have brave warriors, beautiful young ladies and idealized artists,โ the French artist and journalist Pierre Blanchar told the staff of the Russian news-paper โCaucasusโ in Tbilisi in 1856, during a dinner held in honor of Aleksandr Baryatin-sky, Governor of the Caucasus. Regrettably, little is known about Pierre Blancharโs time in Georgia, although he devoted much of his life to the Cauca-sus, in particular to the study of Georgian historical monu-ments, cities, landscapes and history.
Blanchar was born on Feb-ruary 25, 1805, in Lyon, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. He was 14 years old when he moved to Paris to study in the school of fine art there, which played an impor-tant role in the creativity of the future professional painter.
The album of Niko Dadiani, gifted to him by the Emperor of Russia, contained a consid-erable number of Blancharโs graphic works, today pre-served in Zugdidi at the Dadi-

ani Palace. Enchanted by Blancharโs art, Dadiani took some his paintings out of the album and hung them on the walls of the palace. Some paint-ings were given away as presents by the Dadiani family, however, which is why some of Blarnarโs works are now kept in the Art Museum of Georgia and depositaries of the Russian Museum and Hermitage.
Notably, Blanchar wrote letters of publicity for his graphic drawings, which were printed in leading newspapers in France and other European countries.
In 1858, Salon โDurรกn-Russellโ in Paris hosted painters who had been invited to the coronation of Alexander II. The exhibition attracted the elite of France, giving visitors the chance to see the remarkable works of Blan-char on the themes of Georgia and the Caucasus. The characters within his portraits and the overall compositions displayed โbeautiful Georgiaโ and Georgians, and were frequently mentioned in the memoirs or publica-tions of various French travelers.
The Parisian press also expressed great interest in the exhibition. Two editions of the โTour de Mondeโ and โIllustration de Parisโ published the let-ters of the painter about Georgia and Georgian people. In this catalogue, we publish one of Pierre Blancharโs letters, as it reveals not only the at-titude of the foreign artist towards Georgia but also perfectly reflects the Georgian history of the 19th century.
โI am finally breaking my silence, which happened without intent. I have not written to you since I left Moscow, though you probably know about my adventures from our friends. I came to the Caucasus planning to stay for six weeks, but somehow I ended up living here for more than five months. Nevertheless, in this period I have done some incredible work, creating an amazing album of 50 paintings.
โNow I am sending you the first part, which reflects the beginning of my journey. This letter can be conditionally titled โTowards Freedomโ; the second can be named โDagestanโ, and the others โKakhetiโ and โTiflisโ. I would like to add that this parcel is more abundant and accurate than the one I sent in the spring; everything was prepared too hastily then. From now on, I will send you letters regularly so that you can start printing them immediately.
โNotably, the publication of my letters coincided with the visit of the great ruler Constantine - the son of Nikoloz, who will visit the Caucasus this year, so I think these materials will be interesting for him too. My last letter is about the amazing city of Tiflis. I have painted more scenes than faces. You will see here the heights of Kranaya, from which one can see Shamilโs homeland Gyumri; here is the town of Alexander the Great โ Derbent, and Baku, the home-land of eternal fire. Along with She-makhia (Caucasian Albania) which was recently destroyed by an earthquake, you will see Sha-ki (Azerbaijan), Khansโ palaces, Persian dancers, proud Georgians, the visit of the Viceroy to Tiflis, as well as illumina-tions and celebra-tions of knights of the St. Georgeโs Order. People in Caucasia look for-ward to seeing the newspapers and illustrationsโฆ One more thing: Tiflis is one of the most beautiful and charming cities in

the world, but it is very dirty and muddy in bad weather. Tough, as we have a good weather now, this danger has already passed. I hope the readers will be interested in our publications of Caucasian scenes and characters. It is a pity that our fellow artists are less interested in the Caucasus, its nature, historical background, customs and the traditions of the people living here; a fortiori Crimean Peninsula, which is so trendy within us, is far behind the Caucasus with its magnificent nature and extraordinariness. Your Pierre Blanchar. 18 April, 1857โ.
Pierre Blanchar added an interesting sketch of Tbilisi to this corre-spondence showing Vorontsov Avenue, where the old palace of the Vice-roy, Commandantโs Office and the Vank Monastery are well visible. We can also see Old Tbilisi, on whose main avenue are depicted horses, buffalos and carriages as means of transportation.
Blanchar first met Georgians in Moscow on August 17 at the coronation of Alexander II โ a year before he wrote the above-mentioned correspond-ence, namely the beautiful Ekaterine Chavchavadze-Dadiani, the Queen of Samegrelo; the last Head of State of the Principality of Abkhazia, Mikhail Sharvashidze; Tasso Orbeliani-Gagarina, daughter of Manana Orbeliani; the charming Pasha Dadiani Wittgenstein; Prince Baryatinsky; and the Duke of Osuna, a wealthy and successful Spanish Ambassador who was in love with Queen Ekaterine.
Blanchar came to Georgia through the North Caucasus. Passing through the Dariali Valley, the French guest was amazed by the sublime steep rocks and Kazbegi glacier โMkinvartsveriโ. He unhesitatingly and im-mediately started to reflect this magnificent landscape on paper (p.75).
During his journey along the Georgian Military Road, Blanchar also painted the Ananuri Monastery Complex, showing its original appearance and making the work one of artistic and historical value for todayโs viewer. The Palace of the Bishop, Ananuriโs outer church and the old road, which was later flooded by the Jinval Dam, are well-visible in the painting.
The French artist also visited the old capital city of Georgia, where on a large piece of paper, he depicted the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in bright watercolour. The gate of the Melchizedek Catholicos, graves of the arch-deacons and the wall of the ancient Svetitskhoveli are the most unique samples among other existing paintings.
Fascinated by the Georgians, Pierre Blanchar sent a number of letters to Paris describing the romantic Georgian customs and traditions to his friends. โKvareli, where we stayed at night, is a military base located near a large Georgian village. We had the most pleasant meeting here,โ - writes Blancher. The artist was invited into the cellar of Prince Chavchavadze, where a beautifully laid table and Georgian tableware made a special im-pression on him. โI felt as if I had stepped back in time to the Middle Ages. Luxurious attire and weaponry made this wonderful atmosphere even more special. It will be hard for you to believe, but itโs the complete truth that no-one has ever hosted me like this, only respect and amusement accompanied the feast.
Blanchar named the Georgian Supra (feast) a โcaptivating still lifeโ. He visited the Palace of Aleksandre Chavchavadze together with the Viceroy (1815-1879) Baryatinsky: โwho has seen Italy, and is well-able to imagine the most beautiful city in the country. Telavi is surrounded by a dense for-est and an old castle wallโ.
Blanchar was especially fascinated by the Georgian defensive build-ings, discovering that to control and defend their territory from the Lezghins, the Georgian people built a four-story wooden tower, from which point one watchman was able to constantly control a whole village.
It is apparent that the French journalist and artist Pierre Blanchar did great work in the study of the history and culture of 19th century Georgia. Yet, as said above, Georgian society knows little about this important per-son, whereas the French press of that period is full of his publications and colourful sketches. These materials are undoubtedly a priceless source for the history of Georgia.

One of the best samples of the Western European collection in Georgia is thought to be Bernardo Daddiโs (1290-1348) triptych with compositions of the Virgin Mary and the Crucifixion. Notably, Daddi was one of the best apprentices of Giotto di Bondone (1266-1377) and the leading painter of Florence of his generation. The Virgin and Child are seated in majesty on a gabled throne. They are surrounded by archangels and saints - John the Baptist and the Holy Benedict. On the right panel of the altarpiece is a scene of the Crucifixion (as in another work of Daddi preserved in the Prague National Gallery). At the top of the same panel is the mother of the Virgin Mary - Saint Anna. In the lower area of the left panel St. Peter and St. Paul are presented standing below the evangelist angel.
Florentine Bernando Daddi was one of the artists who contributed to the revolutionary art of the Renaissance. He was particularly successful with his small-scale works and contributed to the development of the portable altarpiece, a format that subsequently gained great popularity. Aside from Giotto, Daddi was influenced by Pietro Lorenzetti (1280-1348) โ one of the most distinguished representatives of Sienese Art. Daddi depicted scenes of the lives of Saint Stephane and Saint Laurent in the Cappella Pulci-Berardi of the Basilica di Santa Croce. He worked on the frescoes on the altar of the Uffizi Gallery (triptych โ Virgin Mary and Child with Saints Matthew and Nicholas, 1328) and on โVirgin Mary and Childโ (1346-1347) in Orsanmichele, Florence. Daddiโs works are preserved in the largest museums of the world.

A large collection of Western European art was kept in the Likani palace of Nikolai Mikhailovich Romanov (1859-1919) and in the Abastumani palace of George Alexandrovich Romanov (1871-1899).
In 1921, during the Soviet occupation, a considerable number of unique art objects were taken abroad by the National Government of Georgia from the two above mentioned palaces. Ekvtime Takaishvili left seven boxes with deer horns and paintings in Batumi which had been removed from the Likani palace. โPaintings that we were unable to place on the ship,โ recalled Ekvtime, โcontained pictures of Napoleonโs marshalls, ministers, and their lives. They were copies of pictures from the Louvre and therefore were not as valuableโ. Apparently, such an assessment can be explained by the fact that Ekvtime did not have time to investigate the paintings, among which he would have found not only โcopiesโ and not only โpictures of Napoleonโs marshalls and ministersโ.
A total of 91 pictures were taken from the Likani and Abastumani palaces to France, of which, according to Professor Givi Zhordania, 41 turned out to be originals. Among the authors were J. Dieu R. Frentz, T. Lawrence, A. Peters and other prominent artists.
A distinguished masterpiece of the Georgian collection is โMatchmakerโ by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), created in 1548. (in literature, the magnificent drawing is sometimes referred to as the โInappropriate Marriageโ). The painting was in the property of the collector Korganov from whom it was later purchased by a prominent Georgian artist and founder of the Georgian National Gallery, Dimitri Shevardnadze (1885-1937).
To protect the painting from the Bolsheviks, along with other treasures, Ekvtime Takaishvili took the painting to France in 1921. During the Nazi occupation of France from 1940, together with treasury defender P. Jodoin, Takaishvili hid the painting in the basement of the Versailles Library.
Despite the hiding of the treasure, Hitlerโs occupants still heard about the precious materials brought from Georgia and interrogated the French protector about it in 1942 or 1943. Jodoin told the Germans: โThe painting was taken from me according to a court decision and I have no idea where is it now...โ The Frenchman endured unprecedented pressure and threats from the fascists and yet refused to give up the location of Cranachโs masterpiece. In 1945, โMatchmakerโ was returned to Georgia by Ekvtime Takaishvili and Shalva Amiranashvili.
On July 29, 1994, the Art Museum of Georgia was looted, and among other works the thieves took โMatchmakerโ. According to one version of the story, the robbers entered the building in the morning and hid in the basement. They tied up the guards and stole the painting. 10 years later, on May 11, 2004, Georgian law-enforcement officers found the stolen painting in the Tbilisi Marriage House. The return of the masterpiece came thanks to a successful special operation carried out by police and intelligence services.
Charles Pierre Baudelaire wrote about one of the versions of Cranachโs โMatchmakerโ: โOf all I have seen in my life, Cranachโs โMatchmakerโ is the most mysterious. It is as if I see a mysterious fate in it. That is why it always brings disaster to its ownerโ.

In 2017, the Art Palace of Georgia purchased a painting from a private seller. It had the conditional title of โMadonnaโ. Studies have since shown that the work is a copy of the XVIII century painting โMadonna and Childโ (the original version of which is preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest) by famous Italian painter of the renaissance period, Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio (1466-1516).
According to Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), Boltraffio, who was from an aristocratic family, grew up among the works of Vincenzo Foppa (1430-1515), Bernardo Zenale (1463-1526), and Ambrogio Borgognone (1453-1523); however, studying in the workshop of Leonardo da Vinci (1452- 1519) appeared crucially influential for Boltraffioโs creativity.
Art critics claim that in the famous painting โMadonna Littaโ, which is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, the divine infant was in fact painted by Giovanni Boltraffio.
The painting preserved in the Art Palace is not an exact copy of Boltraffioโs famous work and although they both have one theme, there are vivid differences between the two masterpieces. In Boltraffioโs painting, the infant Jesus is bent towards something and as that โsomethingโ was not painted by the author, there is an opinion that the Italian master had not finished his work.
In our case, the infant Jesus is reaching for a potted flower, a pot which in Boltraffioโs work is empty. The author of the Art Palace piece intentionally painted a white lily (Latin: Lรญlium candรญdum) in the pot and therefore completed the theme of the painting. For Catholics, a lily represents the holiness of faith. In the medieval works of art, the Mother of God and Saint Joseph are often depicted with lilies, emphasizing the sacred marriage of Jesusโs parents. For the French, the lily flower, as a stylistic form of the Virgin Mary, has become a heraldic symbol. Thus, while creating a copy of Boltraffioโs painting, the author logically added a symbolic detail in the pot. It seems that the white lily was initially different, and was later changed slightly. While creating the faces of the Madonna and Jesus, the artist tended towards the style of Leonardo Da Vinci rather than Boltraffio; therefore, the face of Madonna in the Art Palace painting is more like Leonardoโs Saint Anna, Leda, and La Scapigliata (The Head of a Woman).
We also see distinct differences in the attire. Where in the paintingโs original version, the Madonna is depicted with a blue robe and a yellowed pelerine, in the copy, the dress is brown and the pelerine green. The colors of the pot and the pillow of the infant Jesus are the same in both works.
Thus, the painting preserved in the Art Palace of Georgia is considered to be the work of one of the most interesting followers of Leonardoโs school.

An interesting portrait of Peter the Great (1672-1725) is kept in the Zugdidi Dadiani Palace. The portrait was painted by well-known painter Nicolas de Largilliรจre (1656- 1746) in 1717. The Emperor later gifted the painting to the Alexander II Cadet Corps in Poltava, where a well-known Russian painter Ivane Zaytsev (1805-1890) served. Zaytsev often painted copies of portraits kept in the Hermitage and copied the oeuvre of Largilliรจre kept in the Russian museum. The portrait of Peter the Great displayed in the Zugdidi Palace might also have been painted by Zaytsev.
A great and interesting collection of European artworks was kept at the Smirnovsโ House in Tbilisi. Various epochs, artistic styles and genealogical roots dating back through the depths of centuries and reflecting the Georgian, Russian, Armenian, Italian, German, Polish and French intersections can be found tightly interlaced in the Smirnovsโ House. The youngest Smirnov child, Michael, was born into the family of Governor Nicholas (Nicgolay) M. Smirnov (1808-1870) and his wife Alexandra O. Smirnova-Rosset (1809-1882), in Kaluga, in the summer of 1847.
The newborn babyโs father, a representative of an old Muscovite family on his motherโs side, was a descendant of L. Buchvostov, โThe first Russian Soldierโ serving in the army of Peter I (Peter the Great). The sovereign ruler Peter had appreciated his devoted servant, who accompanied him in all military operations. The Smirnovs kept the Emperorโs gifts with great love and care, and willingly showed them to their friends and acquaintances.
In 1876, the Smirnov family was connected with another famous family in Tbilisi when young scientist Michael Smirnov married Elizabeth M. Tamamsheva in 1876.
The Tamamshevs were deeply rooted in the arts. Elizabethโs brother Vasil was a Major-General, an officer of special mission under the rule of the Governor of the Caucasus, and an authorized agent in the settlement of refugees of the Caucasian front of World War II, but this did not prevent him from retaining his position as Director of the Tbilisi Public Theatre during ten years (1907-1917).
Vasil Tamamshev, together with his wife, well-known operatic-singer Elizabeth Zubalova (Zubalashvili), almost every year visited Moscow, Petersburg and the West European cities. Vasil not only acquainted himself with the repertoire of various opera-houses there but sought to improve his skill for managing affairs and invited the best performers on tour to Tbilisi. Many paintings and graphic drawings โ the works of various masters โ decorated the walls of the Tamamshevsโ residences, but the true objects of pride were five works of the famous Russian marine painter Ivan Aivazovski. These five paintings were gifted to Tamamshev by the artist during a visit to Georgia. According to the will of the familyโs last descendant, Michael G. Smirnov, his ancestorsโ property was handed over to the Georgian State. Everything preserved today in the Smirnovsโ House is just a part of the great property that once belonged to the dwellers of the building, as the long-suffering family was forced to live on the capital left by their ancestors for many years.
There are about 30 canvases remaining in the collection. Alexandra Smirnova-Rossetโs painted portraits must be regarded as
the main beauty of the given collection. One of them, painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873), shows the artist trying not only to show the likeness of the lady but to create a romantic image. He portrayed her in the lap of nature, sitting freely with her legs crossed, clad in an oriental style and wearing an oriental kerchief.
The other, comparatively small, portrait (artist โ A. Tam, 1800-1872) is in more of a salon style; the appearance of the young lady depicted is idealized, and the portrait was created using glazing techniques (p.46).

The Dadiani Palace preserves a painting by the famous British artist Alfred Frank De Prades (1820-1890), who worked on sporting themes. While creating said picture, the author used black and grey to depict Napoleon IV as a horse rider. Napolรฉon Eugรจne Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte was born in 1856. After the defeat of Emperor Napoleon III in the Battle of Sedan, together with his mother, Eugรจne de Montijo, Napolรฉon IV fled to England and settled in Chislehurst, Kent. He served as an officer in the Colonial Army of England.
After the declaration of the French Republic in 1870, the French reactionaries tried to restore the monarchy and intended Jean Joseph as the future Emperor of France. However, to obtain real โBonaparteโ military glory, his mother and Queen Victoria sent him to South Africa, where England had organized a colonial war against the Zulus. Jean Josephโs fate was tragic. In 1879, the 23-year-old Prince was killed in a skirmish with a group of Zulus. His early death sent shockwaves throughout Europe, as he was the last serious dynastic hope for the restoration of the House of Bonaparte to the throne of France.

During the process of formation of a new Georgian Art in the XIX century, European experience came to Georgia through Russia with a realistic style. European painters played an important role in terms of sharing experience and developing easel painting in Georgia. For them, the Caucasus and Georgia were fascinating discoveries.
Among foreign artists, German painters who were either descendants of colonists or artists invited to the Caucasus, reflected well the landscapes and ethnographic characteristics of the region. Notably in their works, with a series on Tbilisi and other cities, Georgia is represented as the centre of the Caucasus region.
In the 1850s, German artists Paul and Helene von Franken paid a visit to Georgia, settled in Tbilisi and began to explore the Caucasus.
In different parts of Georgia, the artists painted landscapes and various characters among the Georgian people, becoming influenced and inspired by what they saw. In the works of Paul Franken, it can be seen that the

Caucasus and Georgia were an important place for him, while for his wife- Helene Franken, Georgia became a second homeland.
Both artists left a considerable legacy of paintings, sketches and รฉtudes.
Paul Von Franken was born in 1818, in Godesberg. He studied at the Art Academy of Dรผsseldorf. As a professional, cities like Dresden, Brussels and Antwerp were the subject of interest and saw him paying frequent visits. Franken lived and worked in Dresden, where, in 1850, he married one of his students, Helene Kรถber. Helene was born in Mitau (Jelgava, Latvia) in March 19, 1825. The painters During and Eggink, who in 1834 painted the portrait of famous fabulist Ivan Krilov, educated Helene.
In 1847, Helene came to Dresden. Before Paul Franken, her teacher in art was Rioting. After their marriage in 1851, the pair moved to Heleneโs homeland Mitau in 1852. A year later, via St. Petersburg and Moscow, the newlyweds arrived in Tbilisi. The art of Paul Franken is said to have

Among works of the German painters preserved in the Art Palace of Georgia, the oeuvre of Josef Thoma (1828-1899) is a distinctive one.
โHouse in the Alpsโ has an interesting history. It was purchased by the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Georgian SSR, Vasil Mzavanadze. The painting adorned Mzavanadzeโs study in Moscow for many years and in 2014, in extremely bad condition, it became the property of the Art Palace. It took about a year to restore the work of the German painter (restorer: Mariam Imedashvili). Currently, โHouse in the Alpsโ is displayed in the Hall of Columns of the museum.
