Industrial Process Water Treatment MethodsActivated Carbon Filter• Filters through
chemical absorption• Removes free
chlorine and organic compounds
• Made from natural materials (i.e. coal, coconut shells)
• Carbon is steam or chemical activated
Dealkalization• Reduces alkalinity in
water• Commonly used for
pre-treating boiler feed water
• Four methods:– Chloride anion
dealkalizers– Split stream dealkalizers– Weak acid dealkalization– Reverse osmosis
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Demineralization• Ion exchange
process• Also called
deionization• Used to produce high
purity water• Removes:
– Salts– Minerals– Nitrates
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Greensand Filtration• Sandy sediment that
is greenish-black to blue-green in color
• Composed of glauconite coated with manganese dioxide, or silica
• Removes:– Iron– Manganese– Hydrogen Sulfide
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Ion Exchange• The process of
exchanging positively or negatively charged ions:– Cation exchange
(positive)– Anion exchange
(negative)
• Controls water purity and pH levels
• Used extensively in nuclear facilities and industrial processes
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Microfiltration• Physical filtration• Removes suspended
solids from 0.1 to 10 microns
• Does not remove dissolved solids
• Commonly used to sterilize and clarify beverages, juices, wines and beer
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Multi-Media Filtration• Typically consists of
three layers:– Anthracite– Sand– Garnet
• Removes suspended solids from 10 to 25 microns
• Delivers high quality water at much faster flow rates than conventional sand filters
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Nanofiltration• Removes 50%-90% of
monovalent ions• Commonly used for:
– Water softening– Nitrates removal– Removal of pesticides– Removal of heavy
materials• Used in manufacturing:
– Drugs– Dairy products– Textiles– Baked goods
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Reverse Osmosis• Cost efficient
method of deionizing water
• Uses man-induced pressure to force water through a fine filtration membrane
• Removes up to 98% of dissolved ions
• Removes contaminants down to 0.0001 microns
Industrial Process Water Treatment Methods
Ultraviolet Disinfection• Physical filtration
process• Utilizes UV radiation to
neutralize microorganisms
• No impact on water’s chemical composition
• No impact on dissolved oxygen levels
• Water must be free of any contaminants that could affect transmission of the UV rays
