David is Chosen As the Next King
1 Samuel 16
King Saul was a good king at first but soon began to disobey God. God decided to choose another king
who would obey him. God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to find a man named Jesse who had eight sons. God
told Samuel that He does not look at how tall or good looking a man is. Instead, God looks at how good
and kind a man is. God choose David, a shepherd boy and the youngest of Jesse's sons to be the next
king of Israel. David did not become king immediately but waited until God was ready for him. David played his harp to comfort King Saul. David was a good man and was pleasing to God.

King David Loved God's Law
1 Samuel 27, 28, 31, and 2 Samuel 9
One of the great things we learn about King David was his love for God's law. He thought about God's law every day.
God's first written law was the Ten Commandments.
God's law for us today is revealed in the Bible. Like David, we should love
the Bible and think about God's word everyday. God loves us very much
but He wants us to obey His law. As the people traveled, God wanted the
priests and Levites to carry the Ark that contained His law. Uzzah was not
a priest or Levite and he disobeyed God in taking their place. God punished
him for this.
Memory Verse
"Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law."

Solomon's Wisdom
1 Kings 3:16-28
Wisdom is the ability to judge fairly and to understand and make wise use of facts. God gave Solomon
great wisdom. Two women each had a baby. One of the women's babies died during the night and she
took the other woman's baby. The two women argued over whose baby was whose. How could Solomon
figure out who the real mother was so she could have her baby? Circle the word that completes the sentence in Solomon's plan.
?
1. Solomon told his servant to bring him a [ sword | knife | baby carriage ].
2. Solomon said he would cut the [ blanket | food | baby ] in two.
3. Each woman would receive a [ whole | half | quarter ] of a baby.
4. The real mother begged Solomon to [ feed | not hurt | walk ] the baby.
5. Solomon gave the baby to [ its mother | its father | a nursemaid ].
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God... and it shall be given him." James 1:5 (NKJV)

Solomon and The Queen of Sheba
1 Kings 4; 1 Kings 10; 2 Chron. 9
Think! We Can Be an Example to Others
King Solomon became very well known throughout the land for his great wisdom. Even the wise men of Egypt were
not as wise as Solomon. Solomon's wisdom was a gift given to him by God, and with God's help, he was a very wise
king. The Queen of Sheba lived very far away. She wanted to find out if he was as wise as everyone said he was. She
traveled many miles across the hot desert in a caravan. She asked him many questions, and there was nothing that
he could not explain.
She looked around and saw not just that Solomon was exceedingly wealthy,
but that even his servants were well taken care of. The Queen saw God's
great glory and power through Solomon. She said, "Blessed be the Lord
your God who loves you and has made you King of Israel."
God wants us to spread the word about Him. From our lesson today, we
find that others can learn about God by how we live our lives. This is called "being an example" to others. The song we sing, "This Little Light of Mine" talks about "letting out light shine" which is just another way of saying we should live a good life and be an example to others.
Name five things you can do so that others can learn about God.

The End of Solomon's Reign
1 Kings 10-11
Think! Our Friends Influence Us
King Solomon ruled Israel for forty years. When Solomon first became king, he, like his father David,
loved to serve God. God rewarded Solomon and blessed him with wisdom and wealth beyond that of any
other king. Even so, God still had rules to follow. God told His people to not marry people of other countries who worshipped idols. Solomon disobeyed God by marrying the daughters of other kings.
Solomon's wives worshipped idols. Solomon had an opportunity to teach them to worship God, but
instead, they brought their idols to Jerusalem with them. With their influence, Solomon soon forgot all that
God had done for him. Solomon built temples for these idols to please his wives, and even went with them
to worship these idols. Solomon also broke many other rules that God had given him. How disappointed
and angry God must have been! God told Solomon, "Since you have not obeyed My laws and commands, I will take your kingdom away and give it to your servant."
We learn from our lesson that, even though he was very wise, Solomon foolishly choose the wrong women
as companions. Friends have a strong influence and can tempt us to do bad things. It is very important to have friends who are good people and obey God, so that we do not turn away from God.
Put a check next to each sentence that describes someone who is a good influence. Draw a line through the sentences that describe someone who is a bad influence.
1. Susie tells her friends that she cannot go to the picnic on Sunday morning because she is going to worship God.
2. Randy tells his friend Larry that didn't do his math homework because he was too tired. Larry offers to let Randy copy his homework.
3. Elizabeth and Joan are friends. Joan accidentally breaks one of Elizabeth's favorite toys. Elizabeth is very angry and calls Joan bad names.
4. John is out playing ball in his front yard. Mrs. Simpson, an old lady who lives next door, is having problems carrying in her groceries. John puts his ball down and runs over to help.
5. Bobby, Casey, and Bill are out playing and get thirsty. They walk to the convenience store near their house. While there, Bobby and Casey take candy and hide it in their shirts. They try to get Bill to do it too.
"And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord..."

The Kingdom Divides
1 Kings 12:1-19; 2 Chronicles 10
King Solomon's son, Rehoboam, became the next king of Israel. The people complained about the high
taxes that Solomon had required. Older wise men, called elders, advised Rehoboam to lower the taxes and
earn the loyalty of the people, but he did not listen. Instead, he followed bad advice from his young
friends and made the taxes even higher. The people rebelled, and God took away most of the kingdom
before Rehoboam had time to do anything really bad. Most of the people followed Jeroboam and made
him their king. Rehoboam was left with only the tribes of Judah and Levi. Rehoboam's biggest mistake,
though, was not being a good king for the people who stayed loyal to him. He turned to idols and
abandoned God. The people of Rehoboam's kingdom followed him because he was their leader. As their
leader, he was responsible for them. He had the chance to lead the people to follow God but did not. We
should pray that when we have the chance for leadership that we won't be weak and foolish like
Rehoboam. Let us pray that we will always obey God and follow His teachings.
1. Who was Jeroboam?
2. Who was Rehoboam?
3. Since Rehoboam was a prince, did he understand what it was like to be poor?
4. What were the people unhappy about?
5. What did the old wise men tell Rehoboam to do?
6. What did Rehoboam's rich, young friends tell him to do?
7. Who did Rehoboam listen to?
8. Who did the people want for their king?

King Abijah Takes a Stand
2 Chronicles 13
King Abijah took a stand against Jeroboam and his wicked idolatry. He listed many the things that Jeroboam had done wrongly against God. Jeroboam set an ambush against Judah. The priests of Judah sounded their trumpets, and the
men gave a great shout. God heard the cries of Judah and struck the children of Israel before them. The warriors of Judah were then able to subdue Israel. The children of Judah prevailed because they relied on the Lord God of their fathers.

God Punishes Those Who Disobey Him

King Jehoiakim and the people of Judah did not respect God. They wanted to do whatever They wished.
God sent Jeremiah the prophet to talk to King Jehoiakim, but he would not listen. Jeremiah wrote a book
of all the things that God said. His helper Baruch delivered it to the temple because the people would not
allow Jeremiah there. The son of one of the priests thought the king should hear what was in the book and
took it to Jehoiakim. When he heard the words, Jehoiakim cut the book in small pieces and threw it in the fire. Jehoiakim ignored God's word and paid the price.

preached to you, let him be accursed."
F. "Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:

founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the
earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell.
And the ruin of that house was great."

Israel who could heal leprosy. The King of Syria wrote a letter to the King of Israel on Naaman's behalf

1 Kings 11:6a (NKJV)
