As I reflect on my short time as your Executive Director, I am constantly reminded that the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra is truly one of the cultural gems of the Cape Fear region. As a non-profit

arts and education organization, we are committed to providing the community with exceptional classical music with our Masterworks and POPS series and music instruction through our Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings ensembles.

To maintain the extraordinary artistic level of our orchestra and to continue to provide our music education and community partnership programs, we rely on the generous support of individuals, corporations and foundations. The revenue we earn through ticket sales and tuition covers only half our operational expenses. MANUEL de FALLA (1876 – 1946)

El amor brujo (1925)

El amor brujo (“Love, the Magician”) was originally written in 1914–15 as a gitanería (“Gypsy Piece”) for a renowned flamenco dancer, but went through a number of other versions before released in its final version as a one-act ballet pantomímico. The plot is essentially boy-meets-girl, but in this case the girl is tormented by the ghost of her former lover, who is eventually lured away so that the two protagonists can exchange the “kiss of perfect love.” The composer described trying to capture the character of the Andalusian gypsy in the music, but I’ve always appreciated how he went beyond the mere imitation of folk music. The orchestration is lean and transparent (even the famous “Ritual Fire Dance” has a more sparse sound than some of the more bombastic re-arrangements of it).

AUSTIN PIAZZOLLA QUINTET

Part of my job description as conductor of the Wilmington Symphony is to choose programming and guest artists. Last year, the Austin Piazzolla Quintet performed at Ted’s Fun by the River, and the reaction by those fortunate enough to be there was so enthusiastic that the idea of bringing that energy to a collaboration with the Symphony was suggested (in particular by my wife Sandy, who likely exerts more influence on me that perhaps other audience members). Their name-sake composer Astor Piazzolla, in a way similar to what de Falla did with his Andalusian sources, used Argentinian popular music as a departure-point. APQ’s take on nuevo tango adds many harmonic twists, metrical surprises, and influences from jazz, contemporary classical music, and beyond, above all with a great flair for the dramatic and emotional elements.

The Austin Piazzolla Quintet specializes in the music of the late Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla as well as original nuevo tango compositions. Founded by James Anderson (violin), the APQ has been performing to captivated audiences since 2009. With Jonathan Geer (piano), Ben Thomas (bandoneon), Tony Rogers (cello), and Phil Spencer (bass), all from diverse musical backgrounds, the band continues the tradition of nuevo tango through intense live shows which feature unique arrangements of Piazzolla’s groundbreaking works, breathtaking original compositions, and fiery improvisation.

APQ released their first album, “Libertango” (2010), to rave reviews and sold out performances in Texas including a spot on the main stage at the Houston

International Festival. In addition to live shows and recordings, APQ has taken an active role in music education having conducted clinics and masterclasses at universities and public schools with a focus on the performance techniques employed in tango, common compositional devices and the origins of the style. “The most difficult aspect of this music, after its technical challenges, is that so little of it is actually on the page,” begins Anderson. “Much like jazz, if you only play what’s on the page, it lacks the passion, personal emotion, and sense of freedom which it absolutely needs.” In the Fall of 2014, APQ presented Piazzolla’s favorite and final large-scale work for his own quintet, the rare La Camorra to critical acclaim in Austin, TX.

In the spring of 2016, APQ was invited by the world renown Colorado Ballet to perform the world premiere of The Angel of Buenos Aires. Weaving classical ballet and sultry tango steps, the work, choreographed by Lorita Travaglia, features stunning movements based on the titular characters of two of Piazzolla’s most loved suites of music – Suite del Angel and Suite del Diablo. “Angels & Devils,” APQ’s fourth album, was released in the spring of 2017 and features the Suite del Angel and the Suite del Diablo alongside two riveting originals from violinist Anderson, the baroque inspired Milonga Passacaglia and But a Whimper.

Dr. Steven Errante has been Conductor of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and a member of the UNCW Department of Music faculty since 1986. He is also founding conductor of the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and accompanist for the Girls’ Choir of Wilmington. At an early age Steven began

arranging, composing and conducting for various musical groups in the Detroit area where he grew up. By the time he graduated from high school, his music was being performed by leading orchestras and musicians.

At college, Errante studied composition and conducting at the University of Michigan and the Juilliard School, studying with Leslie Bassett, Vincent Persichetti, and Uri Mayer. During this time, he wrote the score for The Boar’s Head Festival, a work heard annually in Detroit since 1972. Dr. Errante has degrees from the University of Michigan and the Juilliard School and has previously taught at the University of Michigan,

Northern Michigan University, and the University of Richmond. Errante is an active composer and arranger. His Battleship North Carolina March has been performed throughout the region by the North Carolina Symphony, and most recently Steven has been commissioned to compose a new work for the 2020 North Carolina Azalea Festival. His composition will be featured at the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s March 29, 2020 Azalea Festival Pops concert.

Errante’s approach to music centers on his belief that performance and education enhance each other. In addition to his teaching at UNCW, Errante presents in area schools, organizations and occasionally before a Wilmington Symphony concert in which he illuminates the music being heard. Steven Errante has a special gift for making music an exciting adventure, whether it is through his teaching, conducting, or composing. Those who have experienced his genuine warmth and intense enthusiasm for music may attest to the deeper understanding and heightened emotional experiences they have discovered under his musical direction and in his compositions.
