Requirements remain the same

Grade 10 and 11 provincial exams discontinued

8 credits of Career Education required for graduation

Capstone opportunities will be found within the career curriculum

What is a Career?

The word “career” comes form the Latin for cart or chariot (carrus), a mean to carry you from one point to another. A career is about the life you want to lead – not just a job, occupation or profession. It involves deciding among possible and preferred futures. It answers: “Who do I want to be in the world?,” “What kind of lifestyle am I seeking?” and “How can I make an impact?”

• document, sort and represent one's emerging sense of self

• learn to gather evidence of competencies;

• learn to document stories and provide representations of learning;

• a true "curriculum vitae"

Dynamic Portfolio/Profiles of Learning

Our current thinking for capstone

• Create a personal integrated plan for post-graduation that articulates choices related to (but not limited to):

- Occupation - Education

- Finances - Health and Well-being -Personal passions

• Design, assemble, and present a capstone project to an audience that demonstrates reflection on personal learning and achievement (in and out of school), growth in the core competencies, and reflection on a post-graduation plan

The role of the teacher will be so important as we guide and support students in creating a profile of who they are and what they can do throughout their education journey!

They will take this profile to their next adventure after K-12.

What about Post Secondary?Moving Forward with the Transformation of Education

Jerry Whitehead

Engagement with Post Secondary Institutions

Working jointly with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training to

engage with Post Secondary Institutions (Association Presidents, Vice

Presidents, Registrars and Faculty)

Primary areas of interests include:

Implementation Schedule: Alignment between sector timelines

and PSI’s review and approval process

10-12 curriculum: ELA 11 & 12, Math, Science & Socials Studies are of most interest

Graduation Aassessments: Interested in how the results will be recorded on the transcripts

Teaching and Learning for Faculty: Interested in how PSIs prepare for a

different type of learner

Next Steps: Work with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, BC Registrars &

Sector Associations to host Implementation Forum (Fall 2017) 27

• • What things would you improve for the next phase?

• • Are there additional elements that should be considered?

• • How can we increase collaboration across districts and share expertise ?

• • What conditions exist now that did not when the K-9 curriculum was first implemented?

• • Any other advice?
