HISTORICAL BACKGROUND➤ Public park system composed

of gardens and architectonic elements located on Carmel Hill, in Barcelona (Spain).

➤ Carmel Hill belongs to the mountain range of Collserola — the Parc del Carmel is located on the northern face.

➤ Park Güell is located in La Salut, a neighborhood in the Gràcia district of Barcelona.

➤ With urbanization in mind, Eusebi Güell assigned the design of the park to Antoni Gaudí.

➤ The park was built between 1900 and 1914 and was officially opened as a public park in 1926. In 1984.

➤ UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site under “Works of Antoni Gaudí”.

IS A PARK IN BARCELONA TO OFFER RECREATION AND GREEN SPACE TO RESIDENTS OF, AND VISITORS TO, THE MUNICIPALITY. THE DESIGN, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE IS USUALLY DONE BY CITY COUNCIL.

➤ The main entrance to Park Güell is on the south side, on Carrer d’Olot.

➤ The iron gates, designed in the shape of palm leaves, do not form part of the original plan, but came from Casa Vicens.

THE ONE TO THE LEFT WAS THE ONE ACTUALLY USED AS A PORTER’S LODGE, WITH A WAITING ROOM AND TELEPHONE BOOTH, WHILE THE ONE TO THE RIGHT WAS THE PORTER’S RESIDENCE.

THE DRAGON STAIRWAY

THE STAIRWAY IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS, ALONG WHICH THE WATER FROM A FOUNTAIN RUNS, ONCE SUPPLIED FROM THE TANK UNDER THE HYPOSTYLE ROOM.

On the first landing are some capricious shapes like goblins, while halfway up the steps is the emblem of Catalonia and further up the dragon, or salamander.

THE GREEK THEATRE OR NATURE SQUARE

ITS ORIGINAL NAME WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WAS PLANNED FOR STAGING LARGE OPEN-AIR SHOWS T H AT C O U L D B E WATCHED FROM THE S U R R O U N D I N G TERRACES.

THE HYPOSTYLE ROOM➤ Which was designed to be

the market for the estate. ➤ Made up of 86 striated

columns.➤ The ceiling is formed of

small domes constructed.

➤ A conduit running inside it collects the rainwater that filters down from the square, s e n d i n g i t o n t o a n underground tank, which has as the stairway dragon’s mouth as its overflow.

THE LAUNDRY ROOM PORTICO

The portico adopts the shape of a great wave atop slanting columns, with a double colonnade that acts as a buttress.

THE AUSTRIA GARDENS

➤ THE ZONE WAS USED AS A MUNICIPAL PLANT NURSERY.

➤ IT GOT ITS NAME THROUGH A DONATION OF TREES FROM AUSTRIA IN 1977.

THE SNAKE SEATUNUSUALLY COMFORTABLE FOR A STONE BENCH : GAUDI HAD A WORKMAN DROP HIS PANTS AND SIT IN SOFT PLASTER TO RECORD THE CORRECT ANATOMICAL CURVE - FORESHADOWING THE SCIENCE OF ERGONOMICS BY HALF A CENTURY.

RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

GAUDÍ HOUSE MUSEUM

WAS THE RESIDENCE OF ANTONI GAUDÍ FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS, FROM 1906 TILL THE END OF 1925. ON 28 SEPTEMBER 1963 IT WAS OPENED AS A MUSEUM AND NOWADAYS HOUSES A COLLECTION OF FURNITURE AND OBJECTS DESIGNED BY THE ARCHITECT.

THE PARK IS ALSO SUITABLE TO TAKE A LOT OF NICE PHOTOS.

DOG-FRIENDLY AREADURING THE REGULATED TIMES, PETS WILL ONLY BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE PARK IF KEPT ON A LEAD THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE VISIT.

MORNING JOGNOT ONLY DESIGNED BY GAUDI, BUT INCREDIBLE VIEWS OF THE ENTIRE CITY. GET UP EARLY TO AVOID THE CROWDS.

➤ RIGHT-Windows boxes with colourful stones and decorated like a fantasy story in question.

➤ LEFT-The iron gates, designed in the shape of palm leaves.

TYPE OF MATERIALS USED

➤ The famous salamander or dragon in the centre of the staircase is covered with small pieces of colourful ceramic. This technique called “trencadís”.

➤ The roof of the hall are covered with hemispherical domes trencadís white.

➤ Portico backing onto a retaining wall made from unworked stone It is one of the finest examples of the organic architecture upheld by Gaudí.

TYPE OF MATERIALS USEDTHE VAULTED ROOF OF B O T H C A T A L A N CERAMICS MADE IN COLOUR CAPTIVATES THE VISITOR AND GIVES US A SNAPSHOT OF WHAT WE WILL FIND WITHIN THE PARK.
