How do I Find the right Book?

Go to Destiny (http://destiny.ocps.net). 1. Find Colonial High School under High Schools.

 2. Then click on the right tab that says Catalog. (Notice you can search by keyword, title, author, or series.) 3. Type in what you are looking for in the search box.          4.  A list of results will come up.  5. You can click on any title to see a summary of the book. Under each title is a call number which will tell you where to find the book.  To the right of each title, it will show you if the book is available. 0 out of 1 means that that we have one copy but it is currently checked out.

Page 5: Media Orientation

What if you don't have any books on my topic?• Try using different search words

o  If you are too specific, we may not have a book on

something that specific.

ex: If you are looking for a book on breakdancing, we may not have one on that specific style but you may find a chapter on breakdancing in a book about dance.

o If you are too broad in your search, you may find

too many sources that don't fit your topic.

ex: You may be doing research on violence and have trouble finding a book.  If you narrow it down to guns, gangs, or domestic abuse, you may have better luck.

Page 6: Media Orientation

I know what book I want, now what do I do?

 • Once you have the call number of the book, you will be able

to find the book. A call number is like the address of the book. Every book has a call number which is on the bottom spine of the book. Call numbers are usually two lines.  The first line is the section of the media center that it is in and the second is usually the author's last name.

 • Fiction - F & Author's last name• Biography - B & Subject's last name• Easy - E & Author's last name • Reference - REF & Dewey • Dewey - 122.234 & Author's last name

Page 7: Media Orientation

Where is it?

• The fiction is on one side of the media center.

o The call numbers all start with F or FIC so all you have to do is find the first three letters of the author's last name.

o All the books are in alphabetical order based on

the author's last name.

o Ex: A Stephen King book would have a call number of

                    F KIN.

Page 8: Media Orientation

Where else could it be?

• The nonfiction books are on the other side of the media center.

o They are arranged by number. The numbers are

above the bookcases. o Dewey Decimal is the classification system for

non-fiction books. The number represents a topic.  The more specific the topic, the more specific the number.

o First you have to find the number, then you find the letters of the author's last name.

o Ex : The ASPCA complete dog care manual would be 636.7 FOG
