Greek Verb an introduction
A Verb expresses the way in which the subject acts, the state in which the subject is or a change it undergoes.
ExamplesΓράφω [γráfo] = I write/ I am writing. Action
κοιμάμαι [cimáme]= Ι sleep/ I am sleeping. State
Mεγαλώνω[meγalóno]= Ι grow up change
In Greek verbs, the person (I- you- he, she, it) and the number (singular-plural- ) are implied.
Usually, personal pronoun is not used. example
γράφεις. you write (singular).γράφετε. You write (plural)
When the personal pronoun is used with the verb?
In greek, the personal pronoun is used with the verb to put an emphasis.
examples 1.Αυτός γράφει- Aftós γráfi.
He writes /is writing= He is the one who writes/is writing.
2.Εγώ θυμάμαι. Εγó θimáme. I remember= I am the one who remembers
citation form of the Greek verb
The citation form of the Greek verb is denoted by the 1st person singular of the simple present tense.
Examples1 γράφω [γráfo] = I write
2 περπατάω/περπατώ [Perpatáo/perpató]= I walk3 Κοιμάμαι [cimáme]= I sleep
4 Χάνω [Xáno]= I lose 5 θυμάμαι [Θimáme] = I remember

In greek language a verb may alone form a sentence. examples
1 Περπατά. [perpatá]. He is walking./statement 2. Γράφεις; [γráfis?]. Are you writing?/ question
(second person, singular) 3 Κοιμούνται. [cimúnte]. They are sleeping./statement
4 Τρώτε; [tróte?]. Are you eating? /question 5 Έχασα. [éxasa]. I lost. /statement
When Verbs do not require an object they are called intransitive.
In what ways does a verb function in a sentence?
In a sentence a verb may be combined with a number of other elements such as objects.
Sentence’s order: Subject-Verb-Object. The order is variable:S-V-O, V-S-O, O-V-S.
ExampleNick is writing the text
O Νίκος γράφει το κείμενο. (S-V-O). O Níkos γráfi to címeno.
Γράφει ο Νίκος το κείμενο. (V-S-O). γráfi o Níkos to címeno
Το κείμενο γράφει ο Νίκος. (O-V-S)To címeno γráfi o Níkos
When verbs require an object (at least one), they are called transitive
In what ways does a verb function in a sentence?
A verb may be combined with adverbial modifiers. It may also be preceded by particles expressing mood, tense, or negation and weak object pronouns.
examplesΗ Μαρία θα έρθει αύριο.
I maría θa érθei ávrio= Mary will come tomorrow
Θα έρθει χωρίς το Γιάννη. Θa érθi xorís to jiáni= She will come without John
Δε θα μας φέρει δώρα.δe θa mas féri δóra= She will not bring us gifts

Conjugation
each verb is formed by a combination of a stem and an inflectional ending. The stem carries
the meaning of the verb. We have to say here that there are many irregular verbs in greek
language. These irregularities have to do with how the stem is formed in each case. A good dictionary is advisable for people who wish
to learn details about this topic
Τhere are 2 types of verb conjugation, 2 voices (active and mediopassive) and three moods: Indicative (Oristiki - Οριστική ) Subjunctive
(Ipotaktiki – Υποτακτική) Imperative (Prostaktiki - Προστακτική )
noticeThere are many irregular verbs in Greek language divided in about 10
subgroups

Verbs of this group always end in an unstressed–ω, in first person, singular
Example γράφω-[γráfo] =I write

B conjugation is devided in 2 subgroups: B1, B2 Verbs of First subgroup (B1) may also have a second form in -άω
Examples τραγουδάω / τραγουδώ . Traγuδáo-traγuδó= I sing
περπατάω/ περπατώ perpatáo-perpató= I walk
