Question tags
QUESTION TAGS
Tags are used in spoken English but not in formal written English.
They are not really questions but are a way of asking the other person to make a comment and so keep the
conversation open.
To make a tag, use the first auxiliary.
If in the main clause there is an auxiliary or modal verb this is repeated in the question tag:
- In the negative form if the main clause is affirmative. - In the affirmative form if the main clause is negative.
If there isn't auxiliary, use do, does or did.
Affermative AUSILIARE + NOT + PRONOME SOGGETTO?
Es: - Mary is studying, isn’t she? (Mary sta studiando, vero?)
- You worked hard, didn’t you? (Ieri hai lavorato molto, vero?)
Negative AUSILIARE + PRONOME SOGGETTO?
Es: - You haven’t gone out, today, have you?
Imperative WILL YOU?
Es: Close the window, will you?
Let's SHALL WE?
Es: - Let's have pizza tonight, shall we? (Vogliamo mangiare pizza questa sera?)
