• Settlement in the town's region dates to the Neolithic  age. There is evidence of a prosperous society that was familiar with copper mining and processing. During the 6th century, the period known as the Great Migration, Slavic tribes appeared in the Spiš region.

• During the 10th century the structure of their settlements stabilized and important communication roads were established.

• The settlement was included within the state of Great Moravia. By the 12th century at the latest a Slovak settlement had been established known as Iglov.

• In the 13th century Saxon colonists were settled here and their settlement became known as "Villa Nova” covering the area of the present town. Iglov and Villa Nova were amalgamated into one town in the second half of the 13th century.

• Spisšská Nová Ves became an important market town in 14th century and in the year 1380 official mining town which had the largest street market in the Kingdom of Hungary.

• Important person in the history of Spišská Nová Ves was Konrád Gaal who made a large hanging bell for Louis I of Hungary. This bells made by Konrád Gaal are still hanging, and form an important conlegacy of European Gothic metal foundry.

• There were many Germans living in Spiš and through their influence the town became Lutheran in the 1540s.

• In 1772 Spišská Nová Ves were returned to the Kingdom of Hungary, and in 1778 it became the capital of the "Province of 16 Szepes towns".

• In the 19th century the manufacture of stoneware was important in the town. The products all bore a trademark formed from the word “Iglo” with two crossed miners’ hammers. In 1870 there was built railway, and in 1894 power station.

• During World War II, Spišská Nova Ves was taken by Soviet troops of the 18th Army on 27 January 1945.

• Roman Catholic Parish Church- is the most valuable historical monument in city. Church tower with its high of 87 m is the highest in Slovakia from 1893.

• The church dates from the 13th century.It´s built to the original of medieval walls. An interesting feature from Spišská Nová Ves´s tower is that has up to seven large clock face. All seven clock faces pulls a clock machine which controls all the bells- Smertny bell, Peter and Pavol bell, Urban and Jozef bell.

• Tower Hall- It was built between 1777 – 1779. The interier of tower hall is the most significant place represative of hall occupying two floors. The building houses the mayor of city and part of the municipal authority. In the fifties, the town hall was the center of all city life. In and around tower hall performed the most important decisions and events concerning the Spisska Nova Ves. Tower hall has been renovated a couple times.

• Province House- Provincial house was from the Middle Ages up until 1777 tower hall. The building is standing opposit church middle of the square. The most interesting part of the building is front facade, which includes the Levoča´s gate. The upper part of the front facade is decorated with rococo structure.

• Reduta Theatre- is romantic building built between 1900 – 1905. Reduta Theatre has four towers. The four endings swan sitting on a lyre. Massive entrance portal is from the north side completed by a balcony. In the building there is a huge chandelier. Today we can find there the concert hall, café and restaurant Sonat.

• Spiš Gallery of Art- It has an interesting yard with arcades and remnants of Renaissance windows. Today exhibitions of domestic and foreign artists are still presented here. Every year there are at least 25 exhibitons.

• Evangelic Church- The church was built between 1790 – 1976. The interior is decorated with the altar painting of Christ on the Mount of Olives. The church was renovated in 2013. Today there are concerts and festivals of classical and organ music. In the church there is a valuable library of the former Evangelic Gymnasium.

• Captain Nalepka‘s statue- Captain Nalepka died in 1943. He was a Slovak officer and guerrilla commander. The author of monument statue is an academic artist Jan Koniarek. The statue has stood on The Spis´s square since 1954.

• Markets in Spisska Nova Ves- It´s tradition that has been for over 50 years. It´s one of the oldest events in Slovakia. Markets are held in mind-June in the main square and adjacent side streets, On the markets are coming traders and visitors from all over Slovakia and from outland. Part of the markets are varied curtural and entertainment program from early morning. Visitors´ll find here food, music, for the smallest are prepared various carousel and for adult is nightlife in the form of concerts. The markets last for four days – from Thursday to Sunday.

• In fact Spišská is a place full of fun for each age category. For example there is ZOO for children, several cinemas for teenagers, theatre for adults and much more. Families like to visit a rope park, swimming pool or museum.

• For athletes we´ve got great news; Spišská is a town of sports. We have here several sports fields for various sports like basketball or tennis, sports hall football stadium, winter stadium, athletic stadium, skittle alley, bowling centre, squash centre and shooting range. There is also the possibility of skydiving or diving, fitness centre and yoga centre.

• Massive and difficult access Levoča‘s mountain ridges cover spruces, firs. On the southwest and south sides of the mountain in milder areas they maintain positions beech and oak forests with an admixture of fir.

• The highest hill is Čierna hora- 1289,4 m n. m.

• From high schools have students for choice:- 2 grammar schools and 1 ecclesial grammar
