Sample dialogue: making travel plans

In this dialogue, Ji-hye and Cheol-su discuss how to spend their summer holiday. Ji-hye wants to go to Jeju Island, but Cheol-su wants to visit Ulleungdo. Which destination will they choose?

Ji-hye: Cheol-su, let’s plan our summer holiday. Shall we go to Jeju Island again?

Cheol-su: Well, Jeju Island is possible, but I would prefer to visit the island of Ulleungdo.

Ji-hye: Jeju Island has many advantages (장점). If we visit Jeju Island, we can go to the beach (해수욕장). We can climb Mount Halla (한라산), the highest mountain in South Korea. We can also see Sunrise Peak (일출봉). Jeju Island has mysterious hareubang statues and many kinds of fruit. In short, Jeju Island is a paradise.

Cheol-su: That’s a good point. I really enjoyed our trip to Jeju Island last year, but Jeju Island is very touristy. The beaches will be crowded with tourists at this time of year. Many people go to Jeju Island. Fewer people go to Ulleungdo.

Ji-hye: I’ve never been to Ulleungdo. Why do you recommend the island of Ulleungdo?

Cheol-su: The island of Ulleungdo has beautiful scenery and a unique culture.

Ji-hye: If we go to Ulleungdo, what can we do there?

Cheol-su: There are many interesting activities (재미있는 활동) on the island of Ulleungdo. We can walk along the rocky coast. We can stay in a peaceful and quiet fishing village where the pace of life is slow. We can climb Seong-in-bong (성인봉), the highest mountain on the island. After climbing up to the top, we can descend into the basin of Nari-bunji.

Ji-hye: That sounds great, but what if it rains? What can we do on a rainy day?

Cheol-su: If it rains, we can spend the day at the Dokdo Museum (독도 박물관) or another local museum.

Ji-hye: Can we also visit Dokdo?

Cheol-su: Yes, we can catch a ferry from Ulleungdo to Dokdo. It may be a little expensive, but I think it would be interesting and fun.

Ji-hye: The island of Ulleungdo sounds interesting and fun, but Jeju Island has many myths and legends.

Cheol-su: Well, the Mystery Island of Ulleungdo has many stories, too. Have you heard the legend of King Uhae, the last king of Usanguk?

Ji-hye: That sounds familiar. How can we travel to Ulleungdo?

Cheol-su: That’s easy. We’ll catch a bus to Pohang. There’s a ferry terminal on Bukbu Beach. We can catch a ferry to the island of Ulleungdo.
