Welcome to the October issue of our magazine.

Please join me to warmly welcome our new Executive Director for Regional Operations Mr Sarvesh Malhotra, who oversees JEC’s engineering operations across Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Myanmar. Sarvesh has extensive engineering and marketing experience from around the region, and I am sure his arrival will enable JEC to serve you, our partners, better.

JEC serves our customers in a multiplicity of ways, and this month’s feature article highlights our capability in assuring the physical security of premises, an area where increasingly integrated systems offer not only greater protection but also opportunities for cost saving and even revenue generation.

I am pleased to see our operation in Myanmar going from strength to strength, including a new contract to supply and install air-conditioning and fire protection systems at the Heritage Kempinski Hotel in Yangon. Other good recent wins include for JEC Thailand, who will supply and install building systems at the Singha Complex Project in Bangkok, and for construction of the aquarium at the new Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel.

Finally, my congratulations go to Lam Sze Yui, a Craft Apprentice in Maintenance and Renovation Business Unit, for his success in winning the Refrigeration and Air-conditioning category of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2016. Well done!

Internal and external movement monitoring and control, fire and flood detection and response are just the start. A forward-looking management must address risks of data theft, industrial espionage and even terrorism. While standalone systems still have a role, the largest gains come from system integration, where data and operations of one security system interface with another or with a building management system, ideally monitored and managed from a single interface.

For example, when an end-user books a meeting room, the access control system authenticates her identity, allows her to enter into the room by releasing the door, while the security guard can see her remotely via CCTV. The air conditioning will be turned on in time to freshen the room, and lighting systems activated only while the room is occupied. This intelligent integration of systems enhances user experience, saves time, reduces costs and energy usage, and strengthens oversight.

Or consider a perimeter protection system interfaced with CCTV monitoring. When the alarm is triggered through the perimeter protection system, a “pan-tilt-zoom” CCTV camera can instantly turn to the intrusion area and display a pop-up window while concurrently give security guards a video stream of few seconds prior to the alarm. This powerful feature reinforces security efficiency and enables staff to respond promptly to any potential intrusion.

雖然獨立運作的系統仍有其存在價值，但將多個系統整合帶來的協同效應卻無可比擬。系統整合能將一個保安系統的資料和運作能與其他保安系統或建築設施管理系統互相配合和共享，而只需一個介面便可執行監察和管理，大大提升操作效率。

假設用戶預定一間會議室，綜合系統會記錄所預定的資料，門檻控制系統能證實用戶者的身份，並開門讓她進入房間，同時保安人員亦能透過閉路電視對她作遙距核實。而空調亦會隨即開啟，為房間降溫，照明系統亦只有在房間被佔用時才會自動啟動。各個系統的智能整合不但能提升用戶的舒適感，而且更達到節省時間、降低成本和減低

此外，客戶如將邊界保安系統與閉路電視監察結合：當邊界保安系統傳來警報，支援俯仰-轉動-變焦（PTZ）的閉路電視鏡頭會即時轉向，拍攝被入侵的位置，並即時引導有關視窗通報保安人員，同時向他們播放有關位置於警報發出前數秒的錄影片段。此一強大功能提升了保安效率，使員工對任何潛在入侵都能作出即時反應。

Systems JEC has deployed for clients include CCTV motion detection analytics that combine with a facial recognition system to enhance efficiency and control of access and attendance recording. The system s i g n i f i c a n t l y reduces the time to calculate staff working hours and p reven ts f r a u d t h a t traditional card-type attendance systems allow. In recent years, there has been i n c r e a s i n g u s e o f v i d e o a n a l y t i c s f o r p e o p l e counting and queue detection to facilitate crowd management. This is an area where JEC is able to help customers getting an edge over competitors. By interfacing security systems with other building services and specialised systems it is possible to further drive energy savings and improve operational efficiency.

怡和機器訊號監控中心JEC Signal Monitoring Centre

For more than 14 years, JEC has offered its own 24-hour Signal Monitoring Centre (SMC) to provide round-the-clock assured monitoring and response services to customers. The SMC monitors their burglar alarm systems, handles fire-link monitoring and dispatches response units to attend emergency service requests. Each premise may have hundreds of signal feeds, sensors, alarms and video imaging, to ensure the highest possible level of protection and provide the JEC team with the information necessary to precisely pinpoint a problem and alert the building management office or the police. All calls, alarms and actions are logged and available for analysis after any event.

The SMC operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, backed by an always-ready Disaster Recovery Centre and plan, to ensure continuous service. SMC is licensed to operate under relevant regulatory requirements set by the Security and Guarding Services Industry Authority and Fire Services Department, HKSAR. For large or high-value locations, it may make sense to build an on-site control room, where staff can oversee the integrated system, and JEC can arrange that.

逾十四年來，怡和機器憑藉其二十四小時運作的訊號監控中心，不分晝夜地為客戶提供監控和應變服務。中心的工作包括監控防盜警報系統、處理火警監測事宜，以及就客戶的緊急服務要求派出應變小組。每座建築設施通常裝有數以百計的訊號發射裝置、感應器、警鐘及錄影設備，除了盡可能確保最高的安全水平，這些設備也能向怡和機器的團隊提供必須的資訊，從而及時發現事故並同步通報物業管理方或警方。所有聯絡、警報和行動，均會記錄在案，以便事後研究分析。

訊號監控中心每周七日二十四小時全天候運作，怡和機器更設有隨時候命的災難復原中心，以確保中心不斷地提供優質服務。訊號監控中心依照保安及護衛業管理委員會和消防處制定的相關條例來建設及營運。如客戶需要設立自己專有的控制室，怡和機器更樂於提供技術支援及分享有關經驗。

怡和機器服務到位JEC in action

For air cargo terminals operator HACTL, handling more than three million tonnes of air freight per year, security is at the heart of its client relationships, and hence its business. JEC conducted a major revamp of HACTL’s CCTV systems, working closely with the client to evaluate needs, select appropriate systems and liaise with multiple stakeholders, and then conduct implementation, testing and commissioning and a complete service migration with zero downtime assured.

At Hong Kong's new North Lantau Hospital, opened in 2013, JEC designed and installed integrated security systems for CCTV, access control, video intercom, door monitoring and carpark barrier systems, monitored and managed from a single interface for maximum premises security and efficient operation, and also allowing rapid reconfiguration when needed.

Many Grade A commercial buildings in Central District are protected with world-class security systems installed, upgraded and often maintained by JEC. Building services solutions are often integrated with CCTV, access control, alarm and other systems, underpinned by JEC’s 24-hour Signal Monitoring Centre, where experienced technical staffs are always on hand to respond to any incident and handle any crisis for customers.

負責管理機場航空貨運大樓的香港空運貨站有限公司，每年需要處理逾300萬噸空運貨物，保安措施自然是經營業務和客戶關係的重要一環。怡和機器便曾為這設施的閉路電視系統作全面檢討。在深入了解客戶的需求及測試不同品牌的系統後，怡和機器選擇最合適的系統，最終在維持貨運中心保持正常營運的情況下順利完成系統更換及提升。

怡和機器亦為在二零一三年啟用的北大嶼山醫院設計及安裝綜合保安系統，把醫院的閉路電視、門檻系統、視像通話機、房門監測以及停車場閘門等系統連接起來，使所有系統的監管工作可在同一介面進行，從而把醫院的保安水平和整合運作效率提升至最高水平，而系統在需要時也能迅速再組裝以配合將來的改變。

怡和機器在中環商業區裏，擔當非常重要的角色。許多甲級商廈及建築的機電設施和保安系統亦是由怡和機器負責安裝及維護，並由怡和機器的二十四小時訊號監控中心支援，資深的技術人員可迅速協助客戶應付突發機器故障及緊急事故。

未來保安系統新挑戰The secure way forward

The physical security of premises has never been more critical but JEC is applying the newest technologies to meet the challenges with “future-proof” systems using open-platform technology and developments such as software analytics.

CCTV deployments will more and more be part of advanced video analytics applications that count people coming and going, recognise faces, detect crowds, notice unattended objects, read license plates – and then take appropriate action. Software analytics improves efficiency, availability and accuracy compared with old manual systems.

An Integrated Security Management System (ISMS) gives better visibility and coherent operational control across all security systems. Operators can seamlessly manage multiple systems on a single user interface; with system interactions and incident handling procedures pre-programmed. This powerful feature enhances the operation performance, raises service levels, and streamlines resource utilisation. For instance, an alarm is triggered at a premises, the ISMS displays the relevant CCTV video stream, produces names and details of persons on the premises and suggests a list of actions that operator might follow, with a recommendation. In a stressful situation, such support speeds up response time and may avoid a wrong and costly decision.

In addition to new system solutions, JEC will soon roll out enhanced remote central monitoring as its own 24-hour SMC offers a cloud deployment option, reducing capital investment and facilitating operations for frontline staff.

From a single system to a fully integrated security and building management suite, JEC has the multi-sector experience, technical depth a n d c o n s u l t i n g e x p e r t i s e t o d e l i v e r b o t h system upgrades f o r e x i s t i n g p r e m i s e s a n d new installations for construct ion projects, keeping us all secure.

除了新的系統方案，訊號監控中心亦會在不久將來提供雲端部署選項。怡和機器亦配合雲端應用推出加強版遙距中央監察系統，既可減少客戶在軟硬體的資源投放及釋放出更多寶貴空間，亦能簡化前綫員工的工作。

JEC Thailand Awarded Singha Complex Project in Bangkok泰國怡和機器獲得曼谷Singha Complex項目合約

JEC Thailand has been awarded a contract for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of air-conditioning, sanitary, fire protection and electrical systems at Singha Complex. Located at the corner of

Phetchaburi Road, Bangkok, with a total area of 120,000 square meters, the Complex consists of a 38-storey office building and a shopping mall with a basement car park.

The project incorporates green building technology in its design and operation system which would be able to receive the Gold rating level of "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" (LEED) for Core & Shell.

The project is expected to be completed in February 2018.

泰國怡和機器獲得Singha Complex的工程合約，負責供應、安裝、測試及調試此項目的空調、衞生、消防及電氣系統。Singha Complex坐落於曼谷碧武里路，佔地12萬平方米，由38層高的辦公室大樓、購物中心及地庫停車場組成。

此項目採用綠色建築科技，憑藉其設計以及營運系統可望獲得「能源與環境設計先鋒評級」（LEED）金獎認證（核心及外殼）。

項目預計於2018年2月竣工。

JEC Myanmar Provides Engineering Systems to The Heritage Kempinski Hotel in Yangon

The team effort spent by JEC Myanmar has been recognised and rewarded by securing the contracts for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of air conditioning and fire protection

systems at The Heritage Kempinski Hotelon Strand Road in Yangon, the capital of Myanmar.

The engineering systems will cover all seven stories of the hotel with a total area of 36,000 square meters. The hotel, which is a former State House in colonial style, will be renovated to feature 220 guestrooms with diverse facilities including three restaurants, a lobby lounge, a rooftop bar, a grand ballroom, a swimming pool and a luxury spa.

The project is expected to be completed in May 2017.

緬甸怡和機器團隊的努力喜獲成果，贏得The Heritage Kempinski Hotel的合約，負責供應、安裝、測試及調試空調系統和消防系統。酒店位於緬甸首都仰光的河岸路。

工程系統將覆蓋酒店全部7個樓層，面積合共36,000平方米。酒店前身為州議會大樓，保存殖民地建築風格，翻新後將提供220間客房及其他設施，包括3間餐廳、大堂酒廊、天台酒吧、宴會廳、游泳池及豪華水療設施。

項目預計於2017年5月完成。

設施建造合約

怡和機器的機電合約工程團隊獲得一份重要合約，為興建中的香港海洋公園萬豪酒店建造水族館設施及安裝其他相關設備。

設於酒店正門的水族館設施直徑6米，高18米，將貫通酒店4個樓層並展示多達100個品種，逾2,000條魚類。怡和機器的團隊將負責一系列工程，包括安裝巨型觀賞屏、生命維持系統和水族燈；供應石山造景裝飾、人造珊瑚和魚類，以及提供為期24個月的運作和保養服務，包括安排潛水員及各類相關的消耗品。

項目預計於2017年竣工。

JEC's E&M Contracting team has been awarded a significant contract in the soon-to-be-built Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel for the construction of its aquarium and other associated works.

About 18m in height and 6m in diameter, the aquarium will be located at the entrance of the hotel and pass through 4 storeys of hotel building. It will feature over 2,000 fishes with more than 100 species included. The project team will be responsible for a broad range of works, including the installation of acrylic viewing panel, life supporting system and aquarium lightings; provision of rockwork, artificial corals and fishes, and also the 24-month operation and maintenance service which includes divers and all kind of consumables.

The development is due for completion in 2017.

Located in Tsang Tsui of Tuen Mun, T. Park is Hong Kong's first self-sustaining sludge treatment facility; it is also one of the most technologically advanced facilities of its kind in the world. JEC is delighted

to have the opportunity to participate in the construction of T. Park for a greener future.

With its advanced technologies, T. Park has a treatment capacity of up to 2,000 tonnes of sludge collected from sewage treatment works per day. A total of 90% volume of sludge can be reduced with its advanced incineration system, alleviating the stress our landfills are currently facing. One of the main features in the park – the three spa pools indicating hot, ambient and cool temperatures, in which JEC has devoted its effort into the construction, showcase the benefits of waste-to-energy technology with the utilization of heat energy generated from sludge incineration to heat up the water. Apart from the pools, JEC also designed, supplied and installed the underwater lighting system and manifold water features including the wetland pool, fountain pool, jumping jets as well as an outdoor footbath at the landscape.

位於屯門曾嘴的T. Park [源．區]，是香港首個亦是全球最先進之一，能夠自給自足的污泥綜合處理設施。怡和機器很榮幸能夠

T. Park [源．區] 每天能處理高達2,000公噸從污水處理廠收集的污泥，其焚化爐更能將污泥體積減少達百分之九十，為現有的堆填區減輕負荷。設施內其中一大特色是由怡和機器建設，分熱水、溫水和冷水三個不同溫度的水療池，其池水由污泥焚化過程中所產生的餘熱來保持恆溫，體現「轉廢為能」技術的優點。與此同時，怡和機器亦負責設計、供應和安裝水底照明系統，以及園景區內一系列水景設施，包括濕地生態池、噴泉、跳射噴泉和戶外足浴池。

Supercenters, Inc., a member of the Dairy Farm International Group, which operates Rustan's Supermarkets, Shopwise chain of hypermarkets and Wellcome, has a promising goal of expansion including plans of opening new branches to maximize the reach.

Rustan Supercenters, Inc., being the pioneer in the grocery shopping industry of the country, commissioned JEC Philippines to supply and install MVAC units for their brand-new stores and provide altogether 54 stores with operation and maintenance, preventive maintenance and overall equipment monitoring services for three years. The services offered include the computer-aided maintenance management system and central helpdesk that record and schedule all requests, therefore precluding risks that may affect the store operations, well-being of customers, food safety and occupational safety of the people. With the implementation of a well-planned workflow, JEC Philippines is able to lessen the equipment downtime, actualize a well-informed capital planning, reduce cost and increase the life of assets acquired.

All the stores are located in major cities of Luzon, Cebu and Cagayan de Oro in Visayas. To keep up with the ever-changing technology, all requests will be handled through six different communication channels including hotline, SMS, email, on-line ARCHIBUS form, face-to-face communication with Operation and Maintenance Supervisors and Viber, to speed up the turn-around of requests.

Cummins Jardine Energy Solution Supplies CCHP System for Shanghai West Hongqiao Business District Energy Station 1康明斯怡和能源為上海西虹橋商務區一號能源站供應燃氣三聯供系統

Cummins Jardine Energy Solution (CJES) has been awarded a contract for the supply and installation of Combined Cooling, Heating and Power (CCHP) System for energy station 1 at Shanghai West Hongqiao

Business District. In this turnkey project, CJES will be responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the system consisting of four 1540KW Cummins gas generator sets, flue gas operated lithium bromide absorption chiller and the ancillary cooling tower, denitration system, plate heat exchanger, pumps, valves, high and low voltage switchgear system as well as control system. The highlight is this will be another iconic project of CJES in Shanghai following the trigeneration project successfully completed in Hongqiao Central Business District Phase I, which was the only Distributed Energy project that has passed the project post-assessment from the Shanghai Municipal Government.

The West Hongqiao Business District, one of the core parts of Hongqiao Central Business District, located at Qingpu District, will become one of the key areas of the international trading hub of Shanghai. The energy station bears the cooling and heating load of the heart of West Hongqiao Business District, covering an area of over 1 million square metres.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

Jardine Distribution, Inc. (JDI) recently conducted basic skills training for home owners of the Gawad Kalinga (GK) community in Paranaque, south of Manila. GK is a multi-awarded poverty alleviation movement, better

known for building homes for the needy people.

JDI has helped GK to build houses before by donating some of its well-known construction and home repair materials. For this time, the company provided basic training and demonstrations to the home owners on how to protect their houses from termites, pests and water damage through JDI’s Construction Supplies portfolio such as the Total Termite Solutions, Home Pest Solutions and Water Proofing Solutions.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive of JEC as the Member of Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC) of the HKSAR Government for a term

of two years with effect from 1st June 2016. Mr. Kwong is in the Management Committee of IPCC to oversee major areas of work of IPCC Secretariat, ensuring police complaints are handled in a fair and impartial manner, and advise on improvements to police procedures.

Mr. Kwong has also been appointed as the Member of the Energy Advisory Committee under the Environment Bureau of the HKSAR Government for a term of two years with effect from 15th July 2016. The Committee is responsible for advising the government on energy policy, including policy matters concerning energy supply and demand, energy conservation and efficiency.

Mr. Lam Sze Yui, one of the Craft Apprentices from JEC's Maintenance and Renovation team won at the Refrigeration and Air-conditioning category of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition which was held

on 23rd and 24th June 2016.

A prize presentation ceremony was organised at the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong on 6th August. Dr Carrie Yau, GBS, JP, Executive Director of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) presented the medal and certificate to Sze Yui, in recognition of his talents showcased at the competition.

Co-organised by VTC, the Construction Industry Council, the Clothing Industry Training Authority and elites from industries, the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition is a biennial event which aims to enhance skill levels and the social status of young and skilled workers. The Competition committed to provide a platform for young people to excel in their vocational skills, strive for professionalism and make contribution to the society.

JEC Outstanding Engineering Project Awards 2016怡和機器2016年度傑出工程項目獎

7月17日，怡和機器向大學工程系學生頒發2016年度傑出工程項目獎，以表揚他們富創意且務實的工程方案。今年怡和機器共收到25份參賽申請，

其中7隊躋身決賽，他們各自在決賽中向評審團解說其方案，以贏取金、銀及銅獎項。評審團成員包括香港綠色建築議會前執行董事陳正華教授工程師、香港工程師學會前會長陳兆根博士工程師、怡和機器行政總裁鄺永銓先生、執行董事兼營運總監楊志強先生以及集團業務拓展董事陳家龍博士工程師。評審主要根據五個準則進行評核，包括項目的願景與可持續性、設計概念、項目執行與測試、商業可行性以及參賽者的演說技巧。

各參賽方案在設計概念與商業可行性上均讓一眾評審留下深刻印象。今年金獎由香港科技大學的隊伍奪得，得獎項目為「研發高效能及安全的全固態鋰離子電池」；銀獎得主來自香港理工大學，其項目「社露寶」是一部社交機械人，可與幼稚園學生或有社交障礙的兒童溝通和互動，而且價格相宜；銅獎由香港中文大學的隊伍獲得，得獎項目為「人臉識別血壓持續監測系統」。

On 17th July, JEC presented the Outstanding Engineering Project Awards (OEPA) 2016 to teams of engineering students with pragmatic and imaginative engineering solutions. A total of 25

applications were received by JEC this year, among them 7 teams were chosen as finalists. The finalists presented their ideas to the judging panel in contention for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Award. The judging panel included Ir Prof Ronald Chin, former Executive Director of the Hong Kong Green Building Council; Ir Dr Alex Chan, Past President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers; Mr. Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive of JEC; Mr Penn Yeung, Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer and Ir Dr K L Chan, Group Business Development Director. The presentation was evaluated based on five main criteria, including the project’s vision and sustainability, conceptual design, project execution & testing, commercial viability and presentation skills of the students.

The conceptual design and commercial viability of all presented project ideas left the judging panels with remarkable impressions. A team of engineering students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was crowned the Gold Award with their project "Developing a High-Performance & Safe All Solid-state Lithium-ion Battery". The Silver Award went to the team from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with the project "SoROBO" which is a social robot that can communicate and interact with socially-impaired children and Hong Kong's kindergarten students at affordable price. The Bronze Award went to the team from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with the project "Continuous Blood Pressure Monitoring System from Face Detection".

JEC Outstanding Engineering Project Awards was launched in 2005 and it aims to inspire future engineers to embrace changes for advancement and to advocate the spirit of innovation in the engineering industry. This year, we hosted a series of environmental, health & safety (EHS) activities during the week commencing 18th July 2016 across the Group. The theme of this year’s EHS Week was “Always Be Prepared

Against Potential Risk”, which was aimed to enhance the perception of risk preparedness regarding the environmental, health and safety in our daily lives and at work. We have also taken this opportunity to address possible risks such as financial uncertainty, project failure, security aspects, competition and the environmental impact to our business operations. In view of this, it is understandable that the new ISO 9001:2015 quality management system and ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system standards emphasize the importance of minimizing potential risks.A well-prepared business plan can reduce the impact of possible risks, for instance, to prevent accidents, financial losses, and productivity decrement through employee trainings, background checks, safety checks, equipment maintenance, and maintenance of the physical premises.

One of the highlights of the EHS Week 2016 was the visits to various project sites in different cities by the management team to support the event. Direct communication between our management, colleagues and frontline staff members from different levels is beneficial for our management to gain deeper understanding of the working environment, challenges and satisfaction at our works. In addition, a series of entertaining and educational activities were organised in regional offices and project sites, including the working-at-height training, DIY workshop for mosquito bite prevention products, emergency drill, traffic safety awareness training, self-defense course, sub-contractor sharing forum and fun-filled safety game booths.

To attract more participation from our staff, posters, quizzes, drawing competition, photo contests and animated EHS smart tips on intranet were

2016環境、健康與安全周的焦點之一，是管理團隊探訪了多個城市的工程地盤。管理層與同事及前線員工之間的直接溝通，有助管理層更深入了解員工的工作環境、遇到的挑戰及對工作的滿意度。此外，各區域辦事處及工地亦舉辦了一系列的趣味及教育活動，包括高空工作培訓、自製防蚊用品工作坊、緊急事故演習、交通安全意識培訓、自衛課程、分判商分享論壇及有關安全的攤位遊戲等。

Ensuring the safety and health of our employees is one of JEC’s important business objectives. It is important to acknowledge from the start that this will not be at the expense of what has been accomplished, but the areas identified in SMART will require our collective effort to make improvement. The success of the SMART initiative depends on internal and external stakeholders and all partners to come together and strengthen the culture of safety in JEC workplaces.

JEC's launch of the new set of Vision Mission Values (VMV) on 1st April this year inspires the employees to achieve business growth strategies in coming years. Our EHS department has also implemented the SMART initative for safety and precautions. We need to be competitive and productive by continuing to improve our existing practices through better coordination and collaboration.

There are 5 key aspects in the SMART initiative, including Site supervisio (S), Managing the needs of employees and workers (M), Alerting and identifying the risks (A), Reviewing and establishing safe working procedures (R) and Training to ensure safety at work (T)。

自今年4月1日起，怡和機器啟動了新的願景、使命和核心價值，鼓勵員工在未來實現業務增長策略。我們的環境、健康及安全部門更以SMART計劃作為提升安全及預防意外的方法。要保持競爭力和生產力，就必須加強內部協作，進一步改善現行營運。

Sarvesh Malhotra was appointed as Executive Director – Regional Operations on 1st September 2016. He has extensive experience in the engineering sector and would like to share about his journey to Jardine Engineering Corporation.

As a keen traveller, Sarvesh is interested in helping others get around faster. He started his engineering career in the elevator business, moving people up and down, working for Otis & KONE in India and then in KONE and Otis in Singapore. After spending twenty years in that industry moving people up & down, he was on the lookout for a "cool" job! He found one working for Trane – a world leader in air conditioning systems, services and solutions.

Then in 2010, Sarvesh joined the Jardine Matheson Group and was the Group Director for South Region at Jardine Schindler, prior to taking up his new role at JEC.

In fact, Sarvesh’s first interaction with JEC was back in 2007 in Shanghai while he was with Trane. Life takes amazing turns, as Sarvesh renews his bond with JEC in 2016.

From his more than thirty years of experience in teams and partnerships all over Asia, Sarvesh believes that wars are won when "The Generals" move shoulder to shoulder with the troops at the war front. Therefore, over the past

decades, even though he held senior regional positions, he has always made sure that when he visits a local office, he has sufficient time to work together with the team there, to gain a comprehensive understanding of their businesses and challenges, and to work out feasible solutions side by side.

When it comes to quality improvement, Sarvesh is a strong believer in the Juran Philosophy. He likes to follow processes to diagnose the root causes of a problem, apply remedies and hold the gains, an approach that

他的經歷由於自己熱衷於周遊列國，Sarvesh亦喜歡設法幫助別人快捷地到達目的地，因而其工程事業是從電梯行業開始，接載搭客穿梭不同樓層。他先後於印度和新加坡工作，在兩地都曾服務通力和奧的斯。在電梯工業接載搭客上上落落20年後，他有意找一份夠「酷」的工作，最終加盟特靈，一間領先全球的空調系統、服務及方案的公司。

然後在2010年，Sarvesh加入怡和集團。在出任怡和機器的新職位前，他於怡和迅達擔任集團董事 - 南部區域一職。

事實上，Sarvesh早於2007年已在上海與怡和機器結緣，當時他仍於特靈任職。但人生的兜兜轉轉總是出人意表，到Sarvesh於2016年重返怡和機器時，已經換了身份，成為怡和機器的要員。

他的工作哲學總結30多年來與亞洲多個團隊及伙伴的合作經驗，Sarvesh相信贏得勝仗的關鍵在於將軍身先士卒，與士兵並肩作戰。因此，即使多年來在區內身居要位，他仍然堅持在每次造訪地區辦公室時，多花時間與當地團隊一同工作，從而全面了解他們的業務及所面對的挑戰，並共同制定可行的解決方案。

An Interview with Mr. Sarvesh Malhotra,Our New Executive Director - Regional Operations專訪新任執行董事 - 區域營運Sarvesh Malhotra先生


人物專訪has underpinned a string of successes in his previous roles. For example, Sarvesh secured KONE’s then largest ever single contract in Singapore; tripled the profitability of Otis Singapore and more than doubled profits dollars of his area in Jardine Schindler in just four years during his tenure with this company.

Sarvesh's different roles have taken him to a variety of markets around Asia, including China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. The key to his success working with people from these different cultures is: engagement. He listens attentively and is sensitive towards how others feel. He opens people’s eyes to what they are capable of achieving together; and in return he gets their commitment to successfully grow the business.

Reflecting on his experiences in other businesses, Sarvesh finds parallels with some of the business models and customers at JEC, despite that the revenue models are quite different.

He expects that as South East Asian countries become more urbanised, there will be more business opportunities for JEC in the region. For instance, Cambodia and Vietnam have very favourable demographics; having a significant proportion of young people, and when a young couples marry, they typically move out from their parents’ homes in the provinces to urban cities and start one of their own. Hence, more new homes and business spaces will be built, generating huge opportunities for electrical and mechanical contracting, as well as water and wastewater management.

At the same time, Sarvesh is also eyeing the Myanmar and Indonesia markets in which he sees huge potential. JEC has already set up its office in Myanmar and he is keen to grow that further.

The Malhotra family enjoy travelling, and often take their holidays on the move in countries around the region. Sarvesh particularly recommends driving through Ladakh, the high altitude highway in India that offers travellers spectacular scenery.

When i t comes to dec is ion making, the family often finds itself reconciling the diverse perspectives of engineers and lawyers: while Sarvesh's younger son followed in his footsteps as an engineer, the family’s elder son took after his mother and became a lawyer. We can but guess which view general ly prevails.

談到提升品質時，Sarvesh深信著名工程師兼品質管理學者約瑟夫．朱蘭（Joseph M. Juran）的哲學：他會按照程序查出問題根源，施行改善措施並保持優勢。抱持這一方針，使他多年來在各個崗位上大放異彩，例如他曾協助通力在新加坡奪得歷來最大的單一合約；把新加坡奧的斯的利潤率提高三倍；而轉職到怡和迅達後，又以四年時間把其轄區的利潤提升了兩倍。

由於曾於多間機構任職不同崗位，Sarvesh對多個亞洲市場都有深入的了解和心得，包括中國、香港、菲律賓、新加坡、泰國、柬埔寨、印尼、馬來西亞和越南。他之所以能與文化背景各異的人員和衷合作，全賴「投入」二字：他用心聆聽，敏感地觀察別人的反應；他開闊眾人的視野，讓大家看見衷誠合作能達致的非凡成就。他的投入最終感染他人，團結眾人一起推動業務發展。

他的抱負回顧以往任職其他企業的工作，Sarvesh發現，即使收益模式不同，但那些企業的業務模式和客戶群，卻與怡和機器有近似之處。

他預期東南亞國家將進一步城市化，而這亦將讓怡和機器在區內有大展拳腳的機會。舉例說，柬埔寨及越南的人口比例就非常適合怡和機器的發展，其青年人口較多，他們結婚後多遷出父母居所，移居城市開展新生活，新住宅樓宇及商業空間的需求將因此更加殷切，為公司於機電工程和食水與污水處理行業帶來大量商機。

與此同時，Sarvesh亦放眼孕育着巨大發展潛力的緬甸及印尼巿場。怡和機器已在緬甸成立公司，Sarvesh正磨拳擦掌，冀望進一步發展緬甸怡和機器的業務。

他愛自駕遊Malhotra一家喜愛旅遊，經常在假日前往區內不同國家。他特別推介駕車穿越拉達克，沿著印度高海拔的高速公路一邊駕駛，一邊欣賞壯麗景致。

有趣的是，每當商議決定時，這家人往往要調和工程師和律師兩種迴異的思路─Sarvesh的幼子追隨父親的腳步當上工程師，而長子則效法母親成為律師。或者我們可以猜猜哪一方會較佔上風？

培訓及發展

The success of JEC relies on the sustainable growth of its employees, who could then provide technical expertise and advice to the customers.

One of JEC's strength is having some very technically proficient employees. To continually sustain this strength, JEC needs to ensure that experienced employees will share their knowledge and skills with the younger generation, so that their technical competencies can be imparted to the young employees. That's the reason why JEC has been a strong and loyal supporter of the Vocational Training Council's (VTC) Apprenticeship Training Scheme. Through participating in the training scheme, JEC will be able to acquire new talents to continually provide dependable service and solutions to the customers. In addition, many of JEC's home-grown foremen and supervisors started as apprentices years ago.

In support of the VTC's Apprenticeship Training Scheme, JEC takes up approximately 40-50 apprentices a year. Every effort has been made to ensure the apprentices receive structured on-the-job training. During their 3-4 apprenticeship years, the apprentices are sent for relevant VTC technical courses as well as in-house technical and safety training. In addition, the apprentices will have an opportunity to work in a different unit giving them wider exposure about different types of work environment.

In addition to the training given to the apprentices, JEC also puts emphasis in acknowledging the apprentices' success in developing their career in the engineering industry. Those apprentices with outstanding performance may receive the following recognitions from JEC during their training period:

• Scholarships – awarded to those who have outstanding performance at training courses while at the same time performed well at an interview by JEC's management;

• Nomination for VTC's Outstanding Apprentice Awards – for those who perform well at work;

In the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition (Refrigeration & Air Conditioning) this year, Craft Apprentice Lam Sze Yui was tasked to bend and connect the cooling coils according to the pre-set design within a very tight time frame. He commented that it was extremely difficult to bend the coils given the time pressure, he was glad that he had previous experience performing similar tasks at his workplace; and that his workplace senior had previously given him a lot of guidance and experience sharing while at work and prior to the Competition, hence he was able to perform well during the Competition. Lam commented, ‘I am so happy to have received this award, it is very encouraging to me. I am thankful that the Company has provided me with such opportunities and exposures and I am now assured of my career prospect in this industry.'

JEC is a strong supporter of the VTC’s Apprenticeship Training Scheme and will continue to offer employment opportunities to apprentices under the scheme. JEC’s apprentice scheme is an important contribution to the society by providing development opportunities for young people in Hong Kong, as well as providing skillful workforce for the industry.

在今年香港青年技能大賽的空調製冷項目中，技工學徒林思叡的任務是根據預定的設計圖，在短時限內屈曲並接駁冷卻盤管。他表示時間緊逼使任務變得非常困難，但慶幸在公司受訓時曾負責類似工作，而上司在平日工作時以至比賽前都給他不少指導和經驗分享，使他在賽事中有良好發揮。他說道：「今次能夠獲得獎項我感到很高興，這獎項令我非常鼓舞。感謝公司給予我機會和歷練，現在我對自己在行內的就業前景更加有信心。」

怡和機器長期以來全力支持職業訓練局的「學徒訓練計劃」，並會繼續為學徒提供在職訓練的機會。透過為年輕人提供發展機會及為行業提供技術人才，怡和機器的學徒計劃對香港社會貢獻良多。

關懷社區

In this summer, JEC's Caring Team organised a series of educational activities for the children in the community. On 23rd July, the Caring Team engaged a group of children from the Hong Kong Children

and Youth Services to Ngong Ping and Tai O for a one-day educational tour. The children had an exciting journey first traveling to Nong Ping by the cable car, where they joined a green tour organized by the Agricultural, Fisheries and Conversation Department of the HKSAR, exploring the endangered species during the Ngong Ping Fun Walk. In Tai O, the group toured around the fishing village and iconic stilt houses on a boat. This green journey ended with a memorable boat excursion for Chinese White Dolphins.

Along with JEC's Environmental, Health and Safety team, we hosted a visit to the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve in Tai Po for the children from The Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong on the same day. The children were briefed on knowledge about butterflies. The activity motivated children to appreciate the beauty of nature and the conservation of endangered creatures.

Meanwhile, on 7th August, the Caring Team arranged a special educational tour for a group of children from Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong – Tuen Mun Centre to T. Park, getting some insights on how the waste can be used as an energy source within a self-sustaining sludge treatment facility and the sludge treatment process through a range of innovative and interactive exhibits. The children had a chance to view the operations of the facility through designated windows in the gallery. The fruitful trip was concluded with a tour to Hong Kong Gold Beach where the children enjoyed group games designed by the Caring Team members.

今年夏天，怡和機器愛心大使為社區的兒童組織了一系列教育活動。7月23日，義工們帶領香港青少年服務處的兒童前往昂坪及大澳，展開為期一

天的學習旅程。他們首先乘坐纜車前往昂坪，然後參加由漁農自然護理署安排的自然導賞團，探索昂坪奇趣徑中的瀕危物種。在大澳，一行人乘船遊覽漁村及具代表性的棚屋，最後出海觀賞中華白海豚，結束這次綠色之旅。

同一天，義工們又與怡和機器環境、健康及安全部合作，帶領香港小童群益會的兒童參觀位於大埔的鳳園蝴蝶保育區，讓他們學習有關蝴蝶的知識。這次活動鼓勵孩子們多欣賞大自然的美麗和保護瀕危動物。

8月7日，愛心大使為香港中華基督教青年會屯門會所的兒童安排了一個特別的教育導賞團，參觀香港首個自給自足的污泥處理設施「源．區」。通過一系列創新和互動的展覽，孩子們認識到轉廢為能過程，並在館內透過落地玻璃觀看設施的實際運作情況。最後一行人到黃金海岸進行集體遊戲，為這次充實的旅程劃上句號。

The operational principal is that flywheel systems store kinetic energy (energy of mass in motion) by constantly spinning a compact rotor in a low-friction environment. Inside the flywheel, a vacuum pump evacuates the chamber, reducing the drag on the rotor to improve efficiency and extend system life. When short-term backup power is required because utility power is lost, the flywheel becomes a generator as its inertia allows the rotor to continue spinning and the kinetic energy is converted to electricity.

With integration of line inductor, filter inductor and utility converter, it can help to clear voltage spikes, regulate output v o l t a g e a n d r e d u c e harmonic and improve p o w e r f a c t o r w h i l e minimising noise and transient.
