Who lived in Potter's Terrace, and who went to Eton? What were Poncho and Pugilist? Molly Carr could justifiably have called her remarkably comprehensive new book: A Sherlock Holmes Who's Who, Where's Where, and What's What. The information provided for each entry is concise and helpful. This Who's Who may not aim to compete with Jack Tracy's all-but-definitive Encyclopaedia Sherlockiana, but it is a very useful reference resource, one which, I fancy, I shall consult frequently.” Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Molly Carr

Molly Carr is a Dr Watson expert who has written multiple books on Watson and Holmes and two novels based on the exploits of Mrs. Watson.

“What we have here is no more or less than a gorgeous romp involving several characters from the Holmes Canon, principally Mary Watson. Married to the good doctor who is forever heeding Holmes's calls and leaving Mary twiddling her thumbs at home. Mary is evidently too feisty and individual a woman to let this state of affairs continue for long and proceed to set herself up as a detective in harness with the startlingly un-Victorian Emily Fanshaw. The action flows alonng with great humour (very often at Watson's expense) and verve.”The Baker Street Society (Review of Sign of Fear)

Sherlock Holmes Who’s Who – Places

Once again listed in alphabetical order, all the places from the canon. For example;

+BAGATELLE CARD CLUB. One of the three clubs of which Ronald Adair was a member. It was known that on the day he died he had played whist here. Col onel Sebastian Moran was also a member of the club. The Empty House

+BEVINGTON'S. A silver-and-brilliant pendant of old Spanish design, belonging to the vanished Lady Frances Carfax, was pawned by Henry Peters at this jewellers in Westminster Road. The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax

+CAMFORD. The name of both “a famous University” and the “charming town” in which it was situated. Obviously a conflation of Cambridge and Oxford, making it intriguing to know which of these two Institutions (if either) Holmes attended. The Creeping Man

Sherlock Holmes Who’s Who – Props

In addition to people and places Molly adds in props used throughout the canon - companies, businesses, societies, objects, animals, etc. For example;

+CAMBERWELL POISONING CASE. Watson writes that “The year '87 furnished us with a long series of cases of greater or less interest, of which I retain the rec ords.” One of them concerned a poisoning in Cam berwell. By handling the victim’s watch, Holmes was able to prove when the man had gone to bed, a deduction of paramount importance in this particular investigation. The Five Orange Pips

COCAINE. “Sherlock Holmes took his bottle from the corner of the man telpiece, and his hypodermic syringe from its neat morocco case. With his long, white, nervous fingers he adjusted the delicate needle, and rolled back his left shirt-cuff. For some little time his eyes rested thought fully upon the sinewy forearm and wrist, all dotted and scarred with in numerable puncture marks. Finally, he thrust the sharp point home, pressed down the tiny piston, and sank back into the velvet-lined arm chair with a long sigh of satisfaction.” Poor Watson felt he ought to make a protest against the use of the drug. But all he got from Holmes for his pains was the question, “Would you like to try it?” [A 7% solution of cocaine] The Sign of Four. See also The Yellow Face
