Hello everyone, I'm Hila Zahavi, The collections Curator of the Israeli Cartoon Museum. I am here today to tell you about our collaboration with the Judaica Division of Harvard University.

When we opened the museum, the archive was an empty room, with no climate and humidity control, without shelves or boxes, without acid free folders. There were two of us – a volunteer and I. A couple of chairs, a desk, a computer, a scanner and an entire collection of priceless works of an extraordinary cartoonist – Zeev Yaakov Farakash

So we started working and taking care of the physical conditions of the archive – the proper environment for preservation. Then, we needed to organize and catalogue what we had. This meant many hours of writing entries, sorting works, assigning dates, determining subjects, organizing folders, recording and registering each and every article and more and more. We also started receiving more collections – works of artists, book collections etc. these collections in turn needed the same treatment, and so our work was cut out for us.

While doing all of this, we also scanned cartoons – for exhibitions, catalogues, the web site and research. In the past seven years, we have exhibited more than 40 shows, most of them with a catalogue. We have had exhibitions travel abroad, both to professional museum venues, and comic book festivals. We have exhibitions designed for classrooms and school libraries. Our website has several blogs, all supplying content with images. There are constantly requests from other museums, institutions and researchers for images, data etc. We scanned works only for specific projects. This was a policy we established early on, and not an ad-hoc decision. Still, we wanted the archive to be professionally scanned and looked for a way to make the "big plan" happen – scanning all the archive professionally

About a year ago, after sorting, recording and writing about them, I felt I knew each and every cartoon ever drawn by Zeev: more than fifteen thousand daily cartoons, over fifty thousand different theater drawings, sixty thousand portraits of politicians and celebrities. This also applied by then to another personal collection – that of Friedel Stern. She had fifteen thousand original works about her travels across the globe, about the army, about relationships. After acquiring this encyclopedic knowledge of the artists, the next step was obviously professional digitization of the entire archive…

And then, six months ago I was approached by Yoram Shamir. A passionate curator and collector of the cartoon art, he is the best adviser I could wish for. Yoram knew we had a long term goal of digitizing the archive and one day he offered to set up a meeting between me and violet - you all know…

This meeting turned out to be an important moment for the future of our small archive.

Since then, we have started working, and our collaboration is without doubt a successful one. Each organization – The Harvard Judaica division, Dantec – their local scanning firm and the museum – each is doing its best to make the project the best it could be. And indeed this process is a success.

We have established a long term schedule for the scanning of the archive in its entirety. During the last four months (only a hundred and twenty days), a hundred thousand different original items have been scanned. All of Friedel's collection – sketches, studies, cartoons, weekly columns, illustrated calendars, posters, personal works – everything was scanned. This scanning process includes, for each item, data such as subject, year, title, location in our physical archive and more..

Zeev's entire collection is undergoing the same – already, all of his daily cartoons (fifteen thousand items) and portraits (forty thousand) have been scanned. We're looking forward to the future, as working in the digital environment affords many more possibilities for projects and collaborations
