GSA MEMBERS & ACTIVITIES

Huawei & Nokia join GSA Executive Committee

•  GSA represents the mobile vendor community

•  Focus •  LTE •  IoT •  5G •  Spectrum

•  New web site launching now •  New Road to 5G Report

•  Commissioned by the GSA Executive Committee •  Ericsson, Qualcomm, Huawei – with support

from members via Cobham Wireless

5G MEANS SPEED, CONNECTIVITY, LATENCY, IoT …

‘In a few words, what does 5G mean to you?’

•  Executive Members of the GSA have views on what 5G means …

•  … and we have asked our wider online community

•  Latency and number of connections top the list 5G of drivers …

•  … but finding spectrum and providing for enhance mobile broadband are not far behind

LOW LATENCY AND IoT WILL BE IMPORTANT

Rate the following drivers of 5G development (5 = extremely important)

DEFINING 5G IS DIFFICULT

“Which of the following you would regard as essential before a network should be considered to be a 5G network. Choose all that apply.”

•  Many in the industry think 5G will achieve more ambitious values for latency, energy and perhaps other parameters

OPERATORS IN PARTICULAR SEEM TO WANT IT ALL

“Which of the following you would regard as essential before a network should be considered to be a 5G network. Choose all that apply.”

5G NETWORKS WILL BE HETNETS IN DENSE URBAN AREAS

What deployment do you think will be prevalent for an operator in its first couple of years of commercial 5G operation? Tick any you think will be widely adopted

•  The GSA believes “5G” networks … •  … will use a new air interface and make use of new spectrum •  … will make extensive use of network slicing

•  “Fully 5G” networks should meet all the relevant standards defined by

2020, and should deliver the performance parameters shown earlier

•  “Early 5G” network will go beyond LTE-AdvancedPro, and will meet at least one of the performance parameters shown earlier

“EARLY 5G” NETWORKS DIFFER FROM LTE-ADVANCED PRO

11 © 2015 Global mobile Suppliers Association 11

•  Slower adoption rate than for LTE

•  Few operators will deploy “Early 5G” networks

•  Deployment will start in earnest after 2020

•  Around 270 fully 5G networks by 2025 …

•  … initially in dense urban locations

DEPLOYMENT OF 5G WILL RAMP UP AFTER 2020

Forecasts for 5G network deployment 2015-2025
