“Standing Against All Odds”

Where the “Roots” Are

I was born and raised in Chicago IL, lived mostly in the inner-city southside area. Came from a pretty large family having both of my parents which I am very grateful for. I have 2 brothers and 1 sister, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Life’s Next StepIn May of 2013 I married my best friend and we now together have a 1 year old son named Bruce Wayne. After having my son and giving my dreams a rest, I decided that it was time to get back into my career. I had a lot of things that I wanted to pursue and I was afraid, but I knew for certain that I didn’t want to go back to making barely ends meat!

Getting Stuck

One of the various avenues I pursued was in the hair industry. This was my low wage experience but I really enjoyed putting a smile on my clients faces, so the passion I had for making people feel good was carrying me through this low paying job. At first it wasn’t about the money because I loved what I was doing. That is until the bills started rolling in, then I became overwhelmed.

I worked for a company called Hair Cuttery for 5 years and in the beginning it wasn’t so bad. After I gained the confidence that’s needed in this competitive field, I realized I was definitely underpaid for the services I was providing. I was making minimum wage, whereas other salons were charging triple what I was getting paid!

The Turn Around

Through a friend I was able to work for a company called Society for Vascular Surgery assisting the IT department, and there I found the desire to pursue a career in Technology. I’m not sure what avenue I want to branch off in as of yet but I am surely looking forward to furthering my education in this field.

Changing Course

A Step In The Right DirectionWhen I found out about the I C Stars program I was excited for such a great opportunity but I was afraid that I wouldn’t be fit to attend such a vigorous training program. I was worried that my inexperience in this field would hinder me, and that I would not succeed. I put all my fears and doubt aside and applied for ICStars, was chosen for the program, and now I have no regrets. I am 100% confident that this program will assist in furthering my education in the IT field and look forward to using these skills in whatever path I go down.
