BabesiaAlso called Nuttallia. Babesia is a genus of protozoan apicomplexan piroplasms that infect the blood and cause a parasitic, hemolytic disease known as babesiosis Babesiosis suffer from malaria-like symptoms

2. HistoryA Romanian scientist who first documented the

disease in 1888, described symptoms of a severe hemolytic illness seen uniquely in cattle and sheep which is known as babesiosis

It is serious illness for wild and domestic animals especially cattle and sheep.

In 1957 Americans T Smith and Fred K identified the parasite as the cause of Texas Cattle Fever also identified the tick as the agent of transmission,

1969 the first case of Babesiosis was seen in humans

3. Morphology• Babesia enters erythrocytes at the sporozoite

stage. Within the red blood cell, the protozoa become cyclical and develop into a trophozoite ring The trophozoites morph into merozoites,

• Babesia Morphology  are just like Plasmodium just that causes Malaria.

4. TransmissionVector1. white-footed mouse2. Ticks3. white-tailed deer

4. Transmission• Babesia is spread through the saliva of a tick

when it bites. Babesia is transmitted after the bite of  ticks. There are many species of babesia which transmit the disease.

• Ixodidae scapularis is the most common vector. commonly known as a deer tick, which cause the Lyme disease

5. Lifecycle• The infective stage of Babesia in ticks is a sporozoite.

sporozoites in ticksalivary glands are injected into host erythrocytes in

blood and begin the binary fission development b/w trophozoites and merozoites producing more trophozoites, some merozoites produce gametocytes. The tick definitive host takes up the gametocytes when attached for a blood meal. The gametes are fertilized in the gut of the tick and develop into sporozoites in the salivary glands of the ticks

6. Diagnosis and treatmentDiagnostic Tests1. Though blood sample testing just like Malaria. They are similarity to Malaria Plasmodium falciparum
