Let’s revise the basics

When changing a Japanese sentence to a

question form, you simply add か at the end

of the sentence.

You may remember the question

なんさい　ですか。 Or どこに　すんでいますか。

They both end with か

Asking where someone is from

どこ　から　きましたか。

Where are you from? (although the literal

meaning is more like – ‘Where did you come

from’)

どこ　から　ですか。 This is another way of

asking ‘Where are you from?’

Responding to the question There are 2 ways of responding to the

previous question.

1. Country name から　きました。

2. わたしは　 Country name から　きました。

3. Country name から　です。

Let’s go through some country names in Japanese!

にほん（日本）

Example 1: 日本からきました。Example 2: 日本からです。

オーストラリア（おーすとらりあ）

Example 1: オーストラリアからきました。Example 2: オーストラリアからです。

インドネシア（いんどねしあ）

Example 1: インドネシアからきました。Example 2: インドネシアからです。

ニュージーランド（にゅーじーらんど）

フランス（ふらんす）

イタリア（いたりあ）

かんこく

カナダ（かなだ）

アメリカ（あめりか）

Putting them in a sentence

If you are from Japan, the sentence will be:

にほん　から　きました。OR

にほん　から　です。

If you are from Australia, the sentence will be:

オーストラリア（おーすとらりあ）から　きました。

OR

オーストラリア（おーすとらりあ）から　です。

Saying your Nationality

Saying your nationality in Japanese is very

easy if you already know the country name.

All you have to do is to add じん（人） after

the country name.

にほん　じん　＝ Japanese (person)

オーストラリア（おーすとらりあ）　じん　Australian
