What are ITS?

• ITS encompass the application of information and communications technologies to transport.

• ITS include stand-alone infrastructure applications such as traffic management systems, as well as cooperative ITS (C-ITS) applications involving telematics, vehicle-infrastructure and vehicle-vehicle communications.

• These technologies cover private and public transport by road, rail, water and air, as well as cycling and walking, together with applications for cross modal transport and transport hubs

Step-by-step approach to becoming smarter

Key Technologies in Transport

● Pervasive sensor networks○ Fixed sensor: traditional infrastructure○ Mobile probe: OBU, smartphone○ Human: Social media, wearable device

● Low-cost communication○ WiFi, 4G, 5G, V2X○ Smart Grid

● Software as a Service and Service Platform○ SaaS in Transport○ Mobile app○ ITS Platforms

Global Trends (have impact to transport)

11

Challenges(have impact to transport)

12

Long term and wide ranging transport objectives

• Safety

• Environment

• Efficient and Effective (Mobility)

• Equity and Poverty reduction

13

“Driving these Transport objectives with Digital Technology”

Road Transport What do we face?• Growing demand congestion

• (passengers and freight)

• Needs to maintain good service good economy• Infrastructure maintenance

• Ensure smooth flow, less waiting time (safety, security, and quality) saving in energy and quality of the environment)

• Road safety!

• Energy and Environment!

14

Road Transport What do we try to accomplish?

• Safety, security, quality and efficiency

• Example of Road safety :

“the leading principle of road safety is careful or cautious driving accompanied by compliance with the rules of the road and by the appropriate psychological and physical conditions for driving”

15

Road Transport What ITS can do?

• Example of Road Safety• Driver and any users can travel under safe conditions

• Driver/Vehicle/Infrastructure

• Through on-board or roadside ITS• Influence behaviors or aid the drivers

• Make up for temporary or instability of driver behaviors

• Influence public behaviors, promote alternative infrastructure (mode)

• Monitor correct use of the road, regulate inappropriate actions

16

Road Transport What ITS can do?

• Shift from traditional to modern road management

17

Road Transport What ITS can do? – Roadside and Center ITS

• Traffic control center • Traffic information center

18

Road Transport What ITS can do? – Roadside ITS

• Monitoring

• VMS (Info distribution)

19

Road Transport What ITS can do? – Roadside ITS

• Speed enforcement • Others

20

Road Transport What ITS can do? – On-board ITS

• Digital Tachograph

• Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Electronic Vehicle Stability Control (EVSC)

21

Road Transport What ITS can do? – On-board ITS

• Advanced Driver Assistance system (ADAS)

• Intelligent Speed Adaptation(ISA)

Smart mobility solution…with innovation

Vehicle sharing

•Role of car sharing within integrated mobility

•Development of models for real time multimodal travel information systems

Smart traffic/transit management

•Adaptive centralized traffic and transit management systems that deliver real time visibility across the entire transport network

•Enhanced predictability of traffic information based on the analysis of Big Data

Interoperable mobility systems

•Tools and systems operable across different cities (e.g. smart cards for transit and bike/car sharing)

•Universal mobile electronic toll systems

Dynamic allocation of resources in the transport system

•Multi-use of mass transit infrastructure (e.g. peak hours: mass transit; off peak hours: car sharing)

•Smart charging stations, V2G (Vehicle to Grid), vehicle to home, vehicle to building energy transfer systems

Smart vehicle/fleet management

•Exchange and management of vehicle performance/maintenance data from the web/cloud

•Dynamic rerouting of urban delivery vehicles using real time traffic information 31

Combat for high quality traffic info …

• From about 10K taxi GPS data, we can produce high density (about 20,000 road links) and high accuracies (above 70%) traffic information for Bangkok metropolitan area
