Hop on, hop off – it’s that simple!

The stunning Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon is around 18 square kilometers and its maximum depth reaches more than 200 meters. There are numerous icebergs floating on the lagoon, which have broken off from the main glacier, and they are slowly melting in the lagoon. The age of the ice is between 1000 and 1500 years. The lagoon itself was interesting enough to some loca-tions coordinators that parts of two James Bond films were shot there, A View to a Kill and Die Another Day.

Possibility to take a boat tour among the icebergs - to be bought on the spot (dependent on weather).

This day tour focuses on the most attractive features of Lake Myvatn area. A drive along Eyjafjörður-fjord provides a splendid view of Akureyri. The first stop on the tour is the scenic water-fall of Goðafoss, the name has a symbolic reference to the Christianisation of Iceland in year 1000. The tour continues to Skútustaðir with the intriguing pseudo-craters. Lunch break is then in Reykjahlíð village.

At 12:30 the tour proceeds to Dimmuborgir the maze of magnificent lava formations. On the way up to the explosion crater Víti (Hell) there is a stop at Grjótagjá, the formerly popular underground bathing springs. From Víti the tour turns back and stops at the famous boiling mud pots at Hverarönd (Námaskarð). The last stop is at the Nature Baths, where passengers are offered to bathe in the milky thermal water. C.a. 16:00 the tour returns to Akureyri.

The first link is a guided tour from Akureyri to Lake Mývatn district, stopping at the scenic waterfall of Goðafoss, proceeding to Skútustaðir for the pseudo-craters. In Reykjahlíð village you change for the Krafla – Dettifoss bus at 11:30. This bus drives up to the explosion crater Víti, passing the sulphurous mud pots at Hverarönd. From Víti it continues through large lava terrains to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall.

Here you board another bus taking you through the national park, stopping at Hljóðaklettar and Ásbyrgi. On the way back to Akureyri there is a short stop at Húsavík, noted to be the whale watching capital of Iceland.

Note: Tour is partly guided. It is advisable to take food along, since it neither includes meal breaks nor access to the needed facilities.

The Lake Mývatn district is world-famous for exceptionally versatile nature. The tour starts from Reykjahlíð information centre at 12:30, the first stop is in Dimmuborgir which is a maze of magnificent lava formations. On the way up to the explosion crater Víti (Hell), in the slopes of Mt Krafla, there is a stop at Grjótagjá, the formerly popular underground bathing springs. Víti is a huge crater, whose creation marked the beginning of the Lake Mývatn fires in 1724.

From Víti there is an excellent view of the most recent volcanic outbreak in the area, dating back to 1975-1984.From there the tour continues to the famous boiling mud pots at Hverarönd (Námaskarð). The last stop is at the Nature Baths, where passengers are offered to bathe in the milky thermal water.

The tour ends at Reykjahlíð c.a. 16:00.

The bus 661 departs at 11:30 from Information centre at Reykjahlíð village, drives up to the explosion crater Víti, passing the sulphurous mud pots at Hverarönd. From Víti it continues through large lava terrains to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. After about one hours stop, you change in to a connecting bus, 641A, continuing to Hljóðaklettar, Echoing cliffs, where you can enjoy a stroll among the basaltic columns washed clean by vast floods in the glacial river some thousands years back.

The bus stops also in the horseshoe shaped fortress Ásbyrgi before continuing to the fishing village Húsavík, noted to be the whale watching capital of Iceland. Here you change busses again, now into 650A, which takes you back to Lake Mývatn.

Note: See connection routes 661 - 641a - 650a.

We drive from Reykjavík through the farmlands of Landssveit at the foot of famous Mt. Hekla and into the uninhabited highlands. The Sprengisandur road crosses the middle of the country and offers some spectacular landscapes of desert sands, glaciers and glacial torrents. Much frequented in the older days, the route was abandoned during the 19th century for fear of ghosts, outlaws and other mysterious creatures roaming the sands. The Nýidalur valley is a beautiful hiking country and the magnificient Aldeyjarfoss is not to be missed.

Note: Refreshments should be brought along for Sprengisandur as there are limited shopping options en route.

Lakagígar craters is a spectacular natural phenomenon and only accessible by a 4x4 vehicle. On June 08th 1783 an eruption started in the highlands and lava flowed down to the lowlands and spread over meadows and farms, causing hunger, death and misery. The 25 km long volcanic fissure is fascinating to explore, particularly the crater nearest Laki itself.

Other highlights on this tour: peculiar and picturesque Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon with steep rock walls and chunky promontories along with the beautiful and relatively little-known Fagrifoss waterfall.

Please note: Refreshments must be brought along as there are no shops en route.

Many of the attractions that Iceland has to offer are to been seen en route. We take the national ringroad towards to the east and the natural environment along the South Coast is very diverse - turbulent seas, black sands, grassy meadows, green mountains and wilderness.

The highlights: plummeting Seljalandsfoss waterfall, scenic surroundings by Skógarfoss waterfall, coastal village of Vík with beautiful and impressive high bird cliffs, extensive one of a kind Eldhraun lava field dating from 1783, black sands and glacial rivers, Skaftafell national park - a paradise for nature lovers and the majestic Vatnajökull glacier.

The bus heads out of Reykjavík towards Akureyri, the beautiful capital of the North. We drive along route nr 1 through Hvalfjörður tunnel and the scenic Borgar-fjörður region with fertile farmlands, hot springs and lava fields. Then it‘s across the Holtavörðuheiði heath to the northern regions. The Skagafjörður valley is renowned for horse breeding and historical sites con-nected to the turbulent 13th Century Saga Period.

The journey ends in the picturesque town of Akureyri where the atmosphere is relaxed and the midnight sun is at its most glorious.

The route leads towards east over Hellisheiði through Hveragerði and Selfoss before the bus proceeds to the Geysir geothermal area, the site of numerous hot springs, Strokkur (Butterchurn) being the most active one today. A glimpse of the majestic Gullfoss waterfall is next on the agenda, before the drive north, up to the high plane of Kjölur, begins. The name refers to the plateau be-tween the glaciers Langjökull in the west and Hofsjökull towards east, at an altitude of 650 m above sea level.

The highland road leads on through the rugged wilder-ness to the oasis of Hveravellir, with the geothermal area and bathing possibilities. After a brief stop the bus continues along the highland road past Blönduvirkjun hydroelectric power station. In Langidalur valley the road joins Highway 1 and the tour ends in Akureyri. The above itinerary applies in reverse order if one chooses to begin the tour in Akureyri.

Þingvellir - Geysir - Gullfoss, big three tourist destinations full of natural beauty.

The first stop is at Þingvellir, Iceland´s most important historical site, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. All major events in the history have taken place at Þingvellir and all Icelanders hold the place in high esteem. The route continues passing the Lyngdalsheiði moor, towards Geysir - the original spouting hot spring which all others around the world are named after. Our last stop before returning back is at Gullfoss, the queen of Iceland´s waterfalls, at a time magical and overwhelming.

A visit to Þórsmörk is a “must” during your stay in Iceland. To get there you pass the fertile farmlands of the South, you take a rugged track and cross some unbridged glacial rivers. Þórsmörk is a beautiful nature reserve situated between three glaciers. The region has a surprisingly richness of bird life and arctic vegatation, amazing rock formations and surroundings where the Icelandic mythology of elfes and trolls comes to life.

This is the right spot to see the aftermaths of the last eruption that took place in Eyjafjallajökull in April 2010.

Passing through Húsavík the bus continues across the peninsula Tjörnes to the national park Jökulsárgljúfur. Here there is time to enjoy the horseshoe shaped Ásbyrgi (Fortress of the Gods) before continuing further into the park, to view Europe’s most powerful waterfall Dettifoss, where it plunges 44 metres high and 100 metres wide into the canyon. Later you can stroll among Hljóðaklettar, or Echoing Cliffs, the basaltic columns washed clean by a vast flood in the glacial river some thousand years back. On the way back to Akureyri is a short stop at Húsavík the small fishing village renowned as the whale watching capital of Iceland. From Dettifoss there is a connecting bus to Lake Mývatn.

Note: See routes 641 - 641a.

Scedule: Please refer to the timetable on reverse side Price: 7.300 ISK o/w Akureyri - Dettifoss

Arriving in Húsavík there are two options for the whale watching tour; a departure at 10:00 or in the afternoon at 13:30. The boat tour takes approx. 3 hours.

Both options give ample time, before or after the boat tour, to walk around the beautiful village of Húsavík, visit the museums e.g. the Whale centre, the Municipal museum as well as other sites of interest.

A tour through the highland road Sprengisandur offers wonderful views. The route crosses the pass between Tungnafellsjökull and Hofsjökull - an incredible journey... mile after mile you see grey sand, stones and rocks that have been there for thousand of years - reminiscent of lunar landscapes - and then suddenly the route gains traces of green again.

The highlights: beautiful lake Frostastaðavatn, glacial rivers, magnificent Aldeyjarfoss waterfall, Skjálfandafljót river, spectacular Goðafoss waterfall and last but not least lake Mývatn.

During this tour you experience dramatical changes in the landscape - huge area of black sands, glacial rivers, lava fields, multicoloured mountains and moss.

We drive the Mountain Back Track to the volcanic rift Eldgjá which is intriguing. Only the name itself conjures up images of a mysterious and powerful place. When in Landmannalaugar you will be mesmerised by the colour scale visible in the mountains all around. Landmannalaugar is the ideal destination for nature and hike lovers.
