Manuel J. PadrónTraining and Development SpecialistPetrofac IES, Mexico

You arrive at a party; how do you describe what you do at work to astranger?

I work in the Human Resources team in Mexico, where Integrated EnergyServices (IES) operates four assets: Magallanes, Santuario, Arenque andPánuco. Our goal is to increase production from these fields, belonging toPetroléos Mexicanos (Pemex), the national oil company. In my role, I design, manage and supervise technical training programmesand technology transfer, looking after training for both Petrofac employeesand selected Pemex employees, which we train as part of our contractualcommitment.

What do you love most about your job?

Mexico – just like the wider industry – is experiencing a skills shortage, so Ilove how my work helps ensure that we have the best skills in the company tocontinue operations. And I have a great team of collaborators to help meachieve it.

What’s your most unforgettable experience at work?

It happened in 2012: the opening ceremony of the Petrofac Mexicoheadquarters in Villahermosa, Tabasco. We had officials from the BritishEmbassy, Mexican Government, Pemex and Petrofac senior executives inattendance. It was a great ceremony. And I was selected to conduct thesimultaneous interpretation (English/Spanish) for Mr. Norman Murray, thePetrofac Chairman at the time. Since then, I have been acting as “the officialinterpreter” for Petrofac town halls and other events in Mexico.

Tell us about some of the projects that you’re currently working on.

At the moment, our contracts with Pemex are being migrated as a result ofMexico energy reforms. These reforms have reshaped the industry, so weneed to update our contract models. Also, in the next few months we expect to open our Technical TrainingCentres, where we will train Pemex employees, and I’m currently working onall the support services required for their operations.

Which app or new technology has changed your life, and why?

One of my favourite apps is called TeamViewer; it allows me to accessdocuments on my computer remotely via my phone, from any location.

If you had a superhero ability for one day, which one would you have?

I would like to have the ability to travel in time. Just imagine how many thingsyou could do to improve or repair in your past, or even have the capability tovisit our loved ones who passed away.

Your colleagues from around the world may be reading this. Anything inparticular that you would like to say to them?

I would like to tell them to be proud of being part of the Petrofac Group. Todemonstrate our values in every task they do. To share their knowledge withothers because that makes us grow. To keep in mind that that no matter whatage you are, you can always learn and develop new skills. It’s the bestinvestment and stays with you. Challenge yourself and keep learning!
