Metahaven: Graphic Speculation

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

"Metahaven’s insistence that images are a communicative tool with a far-reaching political impact is a welcome rejoinder to the function of contemporary art as it largely exists today, which is to say, as luxury objects in the service of the exceedingly wealthy. Yet the studio maintains a healthy skepticism toward the political viability of design. 'In graphic design there’s no such thing anymore as an explicitly political message,' van der Velden admits. 'Every message is filtered through endless filters of fonts and software, and all the components are defined by capitalist structures. There are ways to work through this. Critical work must speak through these layers.'"Article on Metahaven by Karen Archey for LEAP, China, July 2013.
