Build a Bridge

I don always know how to talk aboutmy people,or my generat tion,or the generations that came before. I find group labels and identities strange, yet fascinating. When I was young I remember hearing stories about cultures and ways of living that I was unfamiliar with. I would often read the phrase my people,and as I came of age I began to wonder what that meant. When I looked around and thought about my people, I thought of the people that I knew. I thought of the people I saw around me, the people with whom I shared cultural experiences like television shows, and books, but also value systems and social sensibilities. However, as I grew older, definitions and boundaries began to shift. I suddenly found myself in a very different ideological landscape. One in which appearances began to count for a lot more than they had when I was a child, a terrain in which self confidence and identity became increasingly powerful tools. I studied theatre, a dicipline that demands an awarness of as many perspectives as possible. Hence, I began to explore ethnic studies, and thus to reconnect with my own ethnic heritage. I had decided to come to Korea to teach English, as it seemed to be the path of least resistance. Having been born in Chuncheon and adopted as an infant I wanted to, like many adoptees, learn a little about the culture, the history, and the people. My experiences have been very positive. I have met some wonderful people who have been very kind and understanding. I have also been able to participate in cross-cultural projects primarily of an artistic nature. The people I have had the great privilege to work with have been loving, creative, and passionate. Yet we remain on opposite sides of reality staring at one another across a vast cultural ocean. Is it possible to bridge such gaps? Can we really connect with each other? Can we overcome our cultural differences? Are those differences even something we have to overcome? Maybe those differences or idiosyncrasies are the keys to seeing the humanity in one another. I want to have a space in which our dialogues can flourish. I want to participate in community conversations about how we want to live with one another. About the global communities we want to create and be a part of. We must not attempt to change each other; I do not want to change you, I do not want you to change me. I want us to accept that we will be changed as a result of our experiences together. I might never know how to identify or define the beauty that is released through the momentous experiences that shape and redefine every aspect of every single moment of our complexly interconnected existences. My people are Artistic Giants ? Liberal Lions ? Compassionate Families standing in solidarity with one another. We provoke and support one another. We bring out the best and the worst ? the humanity in one another. We are not naive, but idealistic. We still reach for the stars. We express our vulnerabilities with candor and grace, as we move to conquer semantic divisions. We embrace the true and contradictory nuances of pluralism, as we invite rigorous expressions of advocacy. We are not hypnotized by cynicism or hypocrisy. We seek to define our lives on our own terms. We embrace the challenge of putting forth the effort to try to understand, to empathize, to build bridges. We are only what we allow ourselves to be.
