1. Video and Genre• The genre of song, track or artist can effect how the video will look

e.g. colours used, costumes, lighting.

2. Lyrics and Visuals• The lyrics of the song can affect what we see in the video.

Illustrative- You 'see' a word of phrase.

Amplifying-Repeats/exaggerates lyrics.

Contradicting-Visuals ignore song.

4. Record Labels and Artists• Record labels will demand a certain level of intimacy between the

artist and audience, this helps create a fan base e.g. close ups of the artist will be used.• In many cases, artists will have a certain unique motif. Such as

Michael Jacksons ‘Moonwalk’ or Bono’s sunglasses.

5. Voyeurism • The notion of looking at someone. The artist is usually looking into

camera or ‘at viewer’You tend to see artist in:-TV screen-Mirrors-Telescopes• The camera usually focusses on the female body/artist.

6. Intertextuality • Reference to other media texts e.g. Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ has a

take on Marilyn Monroe's ‘Diamond are a Girls Best Friend’ and Iggy Azalea’s ‘I’m So Fancy’ which references ‘Clueless’
