Tremendous growth for Road Networking & Road Traffic in past decade has increased RTA , Injuries & Deaths

Statistics for Road traffic accidents for a World

India at ... 1990 … in RTA Deaths, was at No ... 09 ... position in world.

India at ... 2020 … it was predicted to be at No ... 03 ... position in world.

But at ... 2010 … itself, India in “Hall of Shame” got No ... 01 ... position in world.

Although the RTA is worldwide problem, it is more severe in India. India has the dubious distinction of having the worst record of road safety in the world.

Speeding -430 people Kills every year due to over speeding

Drink Driving-250 people die in a year in over the legal drink drive limit.

Seat Belt Wearing-300 lives a year could be saved if wore seat belt.

Careless Driving-300 deaths a year being "careless, reckless or in a hurry", 125 deaths involve due to "aggressive driving".

At-work-Around 1/3rd of fatal & serious road crashes involve at work.

Inexperience-430 deaths/year involving young car drivers aged 17 - 24 years

Failed to Look Properly- 40% of road crashes involve due to this.

Loss of Control- 33% of fatalities due to ‘loss of control’ of a vehicle.

20% of fatalities a road user failing to judge another person’s path or speed.

National Highway Accident Relief Service Scheme (NHARSS)

• Objective

•Providing cranes and ambulances to States/NGOs for relief and

rescue measures

• Design and implement an effective public communication

strategy for road safety public education.

•This service was designed to reduce the risk of accidents through

raising the awareness among local inhabitants and road users of

National Highways of the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) of about 5,864

km that links the main metropolitan centres of Delhi, Kolkata,

Chennai and Mumbai.

The Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE)

• IRTE took the initiative in 1998 and developed standardized Driver Training Systems, processes and a vast training curriculum. Over 170,000 drivers have since been trained by IRTE and each of these drivers has gone through a process of pre- and post-training assessment.

178 Countries, shows That Developed Nations Have Been Able To

Significantly Reduced The Number Of RTA Deaths By...Proactive

Measures From The Government And Strict Enforcement Of Laws.

The Report Shows That Although Basic Laws For Road Safety

Exists In India, Their Enforcement Is Extremely Weak.

So, In India, Road Safety Laws Need To Be Made More

Comprehensive While Enforcement Should Be Strengthened.
