Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish(Ps. 1:1-6).

The text provides answers to Human Happiness ques-

tions, Who is the blessed? Who are the happy? It starts

with Blessed is, then mentions what not to do, followed

by what to do. What must we not do?

Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor

stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the

scornful(Ps 1:1). Here, three words are presented: the

ungodly, sinners, and the scornful. This is the falling

process of humankind. Who are the ungodly? They are

those with the wicked thoughts. Then, who are the sin-

ners? They are those who put their wicked thoughts into

action. This is the second step of fall. Who are the scorn-

ful? They are those who commit sin and are arrogant and

unremorseful. After that, these three are not distinguished,

but combined into the ungodly. It refers to those who

disrespect and do not fear God. The common denominator

of evil is not fearing God. When does humankind fall?

When they lose their sense of fearing God. True devo-

tion begins with fear. By any chance, have I lost sense of

fearing God? Who is the blessed? Blessed is the one who

    fears God.

Next, what should the blessed do? It is not enough just

to avoid paths of evil. Once one avoids paths of evil, one

needs to fill his/her spirit with Gods Word.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His

law he meditates day and night(Ps 1:2). It says, the

blessed delights in the law of the Lord. To be delighted is

to be immersed in, and to be passionately yearning. The

greatest joy of Gods people is relishing the joy of being

His children. It is delighting and rejoicing that our life is

within Gods love. Just like how long distance love rela-

tionships are maintained via phone contacts and/or love

letters; the Bible is God-sent love letter, a tie that connects

us to Him. Therefore, those who meditate on the Bible,

their relationships with God continue. Blessed are those

that find joy in hearing Gods words, love to pray, enjoy

praising, and long for Lords Day to worship God with

    other congregation members.

However, none of these happen naturally. Humankinds

hearts always lean towards evil. Humankind is sinful and

despises godliness. Natural beings are unable to find joy

in Gods Word. So we need training to turn our natural

ways toward Godliness, and that training is called Spir-

    itual Discipline.

Listening to sermons and meditating upon Gods Word

during Quiet Time(QT) are totally different. During QT,

one hears from God directly, so it has power and impact.

As I assess my own growth in faith, QT was most helpful

then and even now. Those who meditate daily experience

the living God and the mighty power of the Word in their

    daily life.

These are the few benefits of QT.

    1. We will understand Godswill toward us.

Family members live in the same house and converse

with each other on a daily basis, so they know each others

characteristics and desires of their hearts. Same things

happen when we form a close relationship with God on

a daily basis through His Word. We can understand His

heart more deeply. Humankind was created to have fel-

lowship with God. Everyday God visited the Garden of

Eden and conversed with Adam and Eve. God spoke to

Noah to build an Ark, told Abraham to leave his home-

land, told Moses to leave Egypt, and continually com-

manded Joshua and other prophets on many things.

And that same God is talking to us now.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should

go; I will guide you with My eye(Ps 32:8). To this day,

God teaches and guides us through His words. As we make

QT part of our daily routine, we will understand Gods will

for us and experience the blessing of being guided in life

    according to His will.

    2. It revives our soul.

    The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul;

The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the sim-

ple;(Ps 19:7, ESV). To revive is to let live, to give life,

to restore, and to save. Only Gods Word revives our souls.

The Bible has the living breath of God, so it has the power

to revive and restore our souls. For those who experience

life as empty and have no desires, what they need are not

exciting recreations, travels, or developing hobbies. Souls

are revived only when Gods Word enters them.

Why do our souls become withered and powerless? It is

because we deserted from Gods Word. We become spir-

itually vulnerable when the Word of God doesnt support

our lives. What is the biggest reason for missionaries leav-

ing their mission fields? Honestly speaking, it is because

of their relationship with God or lack of it. As they focus

too much on missions, they lose their intimacy with God,

thus becoming unable to spread the Gospel authentically.

People of God should live with the Word. Only when we

dwell within His Word, Gods almighty power will be re-

    vealed in our lives.

    3. We will possess Gods heart.

Recently, I met an elder who was in charge of the col-

lege group I was a member of. I learned that his son grad-

uated from Harvard medical school. And then immediately

he went on a medical mission to Island of Timor, to serve

orphans and people in abject poverty. Why did he choose

that path? He had the heart of God within him. Any ordi-

nary parent would try to stop him with all that they could

do, but this elder knew his son was Gods child first and

foremost. And as this elder considered his sons decision

with Gods heart, he began to understand that it is natural

for Gods child to love God, and came be proud of his son

    and gave his blessings.

When you have heart of God, you will be able to in-

terpret your life from Gods perspective. You will resent

and grumble at your surroundings when you look at things

from your selfish viewpoint. However, if you have per-

spectives of God who does not make mistakes and makes

all things to work together for good, you will find mean-

ings in all things, and ultimately your faith will grow to see

God who loves you, in all circumstances.

    4. It makes you becomemore complete.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is

profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for in-

struction in righteousness, that the man of God may be

complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

    (2Tim 3:16-17).

Complete means a state without any fault or a flaw just

as an offering to God must be without any defects and be

pure. When we mediate His Word every day, and one at

a time, follow the way of Jesus, someday we too can be

more complete like our Lord. If we meditate Gods Word

daily trying to imitate Jesus one thing at a time, then some

  • 8 Arumdaun Presbyterian Church

day we will resemble our perfect Lord.

    5. We will enjoy blessings of bearing abundant fruits and everything going

    well in our lives.

A Psalmist compared those who mediate Gods Word

daily to a tree planted by the rivers of water. He shall be

like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth

its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And

whatever he does shall prosper(Ps 1:3).

Here, the verb, planted can be interpreted as trans-

planted. If we meditate the Word in life, God will lead us

to the rivers of water that will never dry up. Considering

how scarce water was in the ancient times, imagining a

tree planted by water makes us feel rich and refreshed. A

change of season has no effect on a tree planted by water.

It is not affected by famine either. It is rooted very close to

water, receiving plenty of water supply, so its leaves will

not wither, staying green. Therefore, it will bring fruits in

    its season without any doubt.

As such, those who are deeply rooted in the Word have

firm faith that will not be swayed by any circumstance.

Just like Joseph, under any circumstance we will become

believers that bear proper fruits good for our faith. We will

bear fruits according to their seasons; as young people

bearing fruits fitting youthful years, and in elderly years

bearing fruits that are more ripe. When the goings get well,

we will give thanks to God. When the goings get tough,

we will still give thanks to God for strengthening us. We

will become persons with firm faith who glorifies God in

    all circumstances.

Ultimately, who is the blessed according to Psalm 1?

They are those who have the right relationship with God in

    their lives within Gods Word!

I bless and urge you that in the Year 2014, no matter

what happens, and no matter how the world changes, do

not tremble! Have yourself deeply rooted in the Word of

God just like a tree planted by rivers of water!

    Hello Arumdaun Family!

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Danny Yoo. I was born and raised in New York. I grew up in Queens all my life. I went to Bayside High School, then I attend-ed QCC, then transferred and graduated from Binghamton University with a degree in History. Afterwards, I attend-ed Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia for 5 years. During that time, I served at Antioch Church of Philadelphia for two years and then Haeun Church of Bay-side for another 2 years. Now Im here serving the Allstars students since December.

    Called by Him

If I could explain Gods calling on my life it would have to be that God was very patient with me. There wasnt one moment where I felt God called me as a Christian or as a Pastor. It was a lot of moments that God connected together over the years to help me trust in Him more and more. My entire life, I was always involved in church. My mother started attending church seriously when she knew she was pregnant with me. Church has been a great influence on my life. I always

knew that a God existed, so my struggling wasnt ac-cepting if He was real, but rather if God was good. The questions I had growing up were more personal to my life situation. Who is this God? Why does God allow bad things to happen in my life? Whats the point of so many hardships in my life? When will it stop? Whats the point of living if life is always going to be so hard?

God blessed me with a great mentor, friend and pastor during my youth years. He trained me to read my bible and pray. For that I will always be grateful and thankful. However, being a disciple in the church, and a leader

serving the church didnt help me live a full Christian life. Even throughout college, faith was always hard. Even throughout seminary, I would say was the hardest time of my life. But throughout everything I always felt that God was calling me for something. I didnt know what it was, or why he was doing it, but I went to semi-nary as an act of faith.

    Free Wonderful Grace

It wasnt until during my last year of seminary, that I finally I learned what the gospel really was. The good

news being good to me. I joke with my friends that I feel like I was saved after I understood the gospel. That Jesus isnt just a savior, but Hes my treasure. And for 29 years of my life Jesus wasnt my treasure. I tried really hard but it never changed my heart to love Je-sus the way Jesus loves me. It was when I learned that because of Jesus Im already fully and will always be accepted, approved, and pleased with by God no matter how many times I sin or stray away. I finally under-stood what grace meant. The gospel set me free from trying harder to be a better Christian. It helped my heart be free to be weak and a failure because Jesus is my strength and victory. And Ive been living in that free wonderful grace ever since.

Trusting in HimEven though I had a lot of questions about my life,

God taught me to trust in Him more than His plan.

Isaiah 55:6-96 Seek the LORD while he may be found;call upon him while he is near;7 let the wicked forsake his way,and the unrighteous man his thoughts;let him return to the LORD, that he may have com-

passion on him,and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than your waysand my thoughts than your thoughts.

In my life there are more times when I dont under-stand God then when I do understand Him. But when I stopped worrying about what God wants me to do, and just enjoy being a child of God and learn and grow

in my desire for Jesus, Im actually happier with my life today. I believe God was doing everything He was doing, allowing all the bad to happen to my life, so that I can finally understand this good news. I have a good

God, and He wants me to trust that He is good.

    By His Grace Only

Im not a pastor because I want to be a pastor, and Im not a Christian because somehow Ive become a better person, but I am what I am by the grace of God.

1 Corinthians 15:9-10 9For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be

called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.

There isnt a lot of things I have a passion for in life, however, I do have a great passion for the gospel and for kids. I think God matched me with the Allstars well. My hope and vision for my time here is to help the students really know who Jesus is, and what Jesus really did for then, and how that good news impacts their hearts to live a different life. I know there are a lot of things we can teach our students, but my hope is that they will learn more in their homes than in the church. I pray that the best example of Jesus is from parents and not pas-tors. My desire is to work with parents to raise up the next generation.

But I truly believe its not by telling the kids more rules to follow, but showing them our own weaknesses and mistakes, to show them what the example of repen-tance and forgiveness looks like. So that as they grow up they will know its ok to fail, but they need to come to Jesus to forgive them and renew them.

I continue to pray for the children, teachers, and all the parents; that we will understand and grow in know Gods amazing grace. The grace that saves us, the grace that renews us and the grace the reveals Jesus as our treasure. Thank you.

Hello Arumdaun Family,My name is Daniel Sangwoo Jae and I serve the High

School as their pastor. I am 24 years old and attend Alliance Theological Seminary. God gave me a calling to go into ministry when I was in the 7th grade while I was at a winter retreat. While I was praying I saw my-self standing behind a pulpit preaching the gospel to a crowd that I could not see at the time.

This was something was very crazy for me at the time because my younger brother, Nathan, had passed away about a year before that from a very terrible accident playing with crutches. I was very devastated when he unexpectedly died at the age of nine years old. For one year I did not know why God took my brother away at such a young age, and it made me mad to see my mom and dad cry so much. So, when God gave me the call to go into ministry it made no sense because I did not know how I would be able to bring the truth to people when the truth was not in me at the time.

Then a year after that vision, God gave me my very close aunt died from colon cancer. At this point of my life I began to ask more questions to God and my heart was turning hard to stone. The week that I got back from my aunts funeral I found out that my friend com-mitted suicide because of a fight he had with his mom.

There were too many questions that I asked God, and I never heard His voice. I began to run away from God by the end of my sophomore year in high school and when I went into college I began to pursue my dreams of becoming a lawyer and make a lot of money. But this is how amazing God was to me in my life.

In the year 2010 I was on my very first Panama Mis-sions trip with 4 Christ Missions. I had heard a lot about this mission trip because it was very intense in living condition, spiritual-formation, and perspective on life.

I went there with no other expectation than just to have a heart to love God again. The first three days while we

were training for our body-worship skits, there was a song in Spanish, La nia de tus Ojos, and God met me in my prayer right there. He reminded me how much His love was for me. Of course no one can ever ex-plain this, but I just know in those three days of intense prayer I shed many tears and had many runny noses praying to God and thanking God. It was during one of those three-days of prayer that God showed me again the vision that he gave to me when I was in the 7th grade. This time the vision was different because with it came a lot of conviction that I must go and proclaim the gospel wherever he calls me. During the remainder of the 2-week trip in Panama, God opened doors for me to preach my first sermon on the mission field, and he

kept confirming my call to serve the church by minis-tering the Word.

I returned to San Diego and got connected with my family to go back to the same Church again. At this point my parents and I have gone to separate churches for almost 5 years because of our differences and be-cause of college. But from 2010-2012 we went to the same church, where I served as Bible study teacher/in-terim youth pastor. Then in April 2010 I got a call from my pastor and asked, Do you love Jesus with all your heart? I said, Yes, and he said, Pack your bags, you are moving to Philadelphia to be a Junior High Pastor. In the summer of 2012 I graduated from the Universi-ty of California with a B.A. Psychology, and the very next day I went to Philadelphia. My first year and a half

serving as a Junior High Pastor in Philadelphia was a great learning experience where I know God was pre-paring my heart to serve the church. I loved preaching to the kids week in and week out; I loved spending time with them and seeing their lives change; I loved seeing their desire for the Word of God grow week by week as they were seeking first the kingdom of God. It was

truly beautiful. Now that God has brought me to Arumdaun I want

to continue to live faithfully by the Word of God. I am very passionate about the Word of God and I am pas-sionate to see the lives of the people that around me change by the Holy Spirit. I thank Arumdaun Church so much for this opportunity for me to serve the church and grow in the calling that God has given me as a Pas-tor. Thank you.

My three year old daughter Elsies first day at Arumdaun preschool is a day I will never forget. When I

went to pick my daughter up I received a text from my father, my mother who went to the ER for stomach pains that morning was going in for emergency surgery.

Elsies teachers, Ms Rose and Ms H saw the shock in my face and right away began praying for my mother.

Elsie and I rushed to the hospital. The entire car ride and during the two hour wait for the surgery, Elsie sang two new songs she had learned that day, Hallelujah, Praise Ye The Lord and B.I.B.L.E. It was my daughter singing, but it felt like angels were ministering to me, reminding me God was taking care of my mom.

Days following my mothers operation were challenging to say the least. I was eight month pregnant, taking care of my mother, and in the middle of a move from Manhattan. During this time Elsies preschool community gave us love, support, and encouragement we so desperately needed.

That was five months ago. Since then we have been so impressed with Ar-umdaun preschool we decided to attend Arumdaun church. Its truly a joy for our family to send our daughter to Arumdaun Preschool. My daughter thinks its the best school in the world. My husband and I know its a special place where Christ love can be easily seen and experienced.

Teaching As a Mission -Eeva-Maria George, Teacher

I was born in Finland to a Christian family. As a teen I was very involved in Missions to different countries. I was always very passionate about teaching children and early on pursued my studies in Early Childhood Education. I am a mother of three children, a wife of a minister and very involved in supporting my husband in full time ministry. I love the Lord and feel teaching children give us a great opportunity to influence them at an early age. Teaching in a Christian environment was always a dream of mine and I am happy it has become a reality.

Arumdaun preschool is a wonderful place for young children to learn skills while growing in the knowl-edge of the Lord. This month and rest of the school year we will continue learning the alphabet and numbers. I will use music and fun creative activities to enhance the child learning experience. Our goal this month is to learn about different kind of pets and how to care for them. We will also talk about Gods love and memorize John 3:16. I am happy to be here and look forward working together with the other teachers in the Arumdaun Preschool.
