Organiser’s address

Dear Sir/Madam,

It is our honor and great delight to introduce You to the second edition of regional round of European BEST Engineering Competition - EBEC, which will be organised in Sofia in April 2013 by local BEST groups from Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. The First edition was held in Belgrade in 2010, under name BalkanREC.

Through this brochure, we officially invite You to actively take part in EBEC Balkan 2013, hoping that You will recognize the benefits this event brings to Your enterprise, its activities, future and reputation. By delivering a team design task or a case study task to the best students of our region, You’re being offered a unique opportunity to feel how perspective, competent and competitive engineering students think, just as to put their ideas in production afterwards.

You’re being provided a chance to achieve direct contact with the participants and recognize talents by setting serious and corporate-relevant challenges in front of them. Through a task of Your own, You become a part of competition atmosphere, staying in mind of competitors, organisers, guests and spectators as someone who made this great and attractive event happen.

By organising engineering competitions, BEST seeks fulfillment of one of its basic aims. Young engineer’s education process enrichment and promoting socially relevant ways of releasing their potential are considered to be important and insufficiently developed fields. Having that in mind, we sincerely hope that, together with You, we’ll look back to this project in a couple of years and talk with pride about it as an important milestone and a generator venture for other activities of that kind.

We are looking forward to cooperating with You.

Kind regards,

EBEC Balkan2013 organisation team

Board of European Students of Technology

Board of European Students of Technology - BEST is a non-profit and non-political organisation that provides communication, cooperation and exchange possibilities for students all over Europe. Local BEST groups operate at 94 universities in 34 countries, and are led by a total of more than 3200 members. Together, they are constantly developing a growing, well organised, powerful, young and innovative student network.

BEST strives to help European students become more internationally minded by reaching a better understanding of European cultures and developing capacities to work on an international basis. In order to achieve this, we organise academic courses, events on education, engineering competitions and job fairs, thus managing to bring all the partners in the student-company-university triangle closer.

European BEST Engineering Competition Balkan 2013

Regional round of European BEST Engineering Competition – EBEC Balkan is an annual event organised by local BEST groups from Belgrade, Mostar, Niš, Podgorica, Skopje and Sofia. It is preceded by seven local qualification rounds, one in each of those cities, and is itself one of 15 regional or national competitions that delegate their winners to EBEC.

European BEST Engineering Competition - EBEC is the biggest external event organised by BEST. All engineering students are eligible to enter the competition, but only the best ones can win and progress beyond local level - almost 4000 students will participate in local rounds, over 500 of them will proceed to regional or national level, and over 100 will participate in the finals. This year’s edition of EBEC will be held on August 1-11 in Warsaw, Poland.

Team DesignEvery team has to design and construct a device or model that should satisfy competition requirements. The teams have a certain time limit and have to use tools and materials provided by the organisers. Criteria for evaluating the outcomes are predetermined.

For example, a good team design task would be to create the most efficient wind turbine whose efficiency would be tested by a strong ventilator. The enterprise providing this task could benefit in two ways:

- By testing if its existing equipment has a new and creative application

- By getting several working prototypes of a device or model that can later be used for other projects

Case studyEvery team has to study a certain real-life or imaginary corporate or other problem and provide a well-described set of solutions for handling such an issue. Problems can be either technical or management by nature. The results are evaluated by a jury, after presentations made by each team.

For example, one of case study tasks set at one of the previous EBEC was “Design the Feature of the Future” - improving one of the world’s top web browsers. The software enterprise that delivered the task benefited in two ways:

- By getting feedback about certain usability issues with features that were already developed or planned

- By getting proposals about new features that would resolve existing problems and attract new users
