“Cervical Smear Taker Course 2013”

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Program

Introduction Cervical cancer is the 7th commonest cancer among women in Hong Kong (2009 Hong Kong Cancer Registry). However, the disease can be effectively screened for using Cervical Smear examination to detect premalignant changes in the cervix. The Government launched a territory-wide Cervical Screening Programme in March 2004 and over 436,000 women had registered at the central registry by December 2011. Public awareness on cervical cancer prevention was further increased with the introduction of HPV vaccine in 2007. There will be continuous demand for cervical cancer prevention education program and cervical cancer screening service. To ensure the competency and professionalism of cervical smear takers, the Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Hong Kong will jointly offer a short course for Smear Takers. The Course is recommended and endorsed by the Hong Kong Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (HKSCCP). Learning Objectives Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to � Take a cervical smear competently and to provide sufficient data for pathologist’s interpretation; � Recognize abnormal changes of the cervix; � Understand the meaning and management of abnormal cervical smear; � Explain and provide basic counselling to clients on cervical cytology report; and � Conduct health education on cervical cancer prevention. Course Design This is a part-time course. Lectures will be delivered by doctors, nurses or allied health professionals specialized in the field. The practicum is a trainer-led program focusing on practical competency in smear taking and counselling. Students should choose whether they will attend lectures only or lectures with practicum at enrollment. They will only be allowed to proceed to do the practicum upon passing the MCQ test. Sexually transmissible diseases (including HPV infection) 45 mins

5. Counselling women for sexually transmissible diseases 1 hr 6. Interviewing skills 1 hr 7. General women’s health education 1 hr 8. Anatomy and pre-invasive/invasive diseases of the lower genital tract 1 hr 9. Proper procedure of taking a cervical smear 1 hr 10. Laboratory processing of cervical smear 1 hr 11. Counselling women for abnormal cervical smear 45 mins 12. Managing abnormal cervical cytology and colposcopy 1 hr 13. Nursing plan for women with abnormal cervical smear diagnosis 1 hr MCQ Test (2:30-3:30 p.m. on April 20, 2013, Saturday) 1 hr Laboratory visit (11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon, Queen Mary Hospital)

Practicum (approximately 15 hours) � Students must have passed the MCQ Test before he/she can do the practicum � Observation in Smear Clinic (if the student had never taken a Pap smear before) � Practical smear taking and pre-test counselling

The learner is required to take a minimum of 50 cervical smears 1. under direct supervision of the trainer for the first 20 cases; and 2. under indirect supervision for the next 30 cases.

� Post-test counselling training The student is required to see 10 clients with abnormal cervical smear and 10 clients with genital infection under direct supervision.

Assessment Methods & Awards The student must attend a minimum of 70% of lectures to be awarded the Certificate of Attendance. The student must satisfy the following assessment requirements to be awarded the Certificate of Competency: � Passed the end of course MCQ test. � Complete the minimum requirements for cases to be seen. � Demonstrate competency in smear taking and counselling. Medium of Instruction Lecture: English supplemented with Cantonese Practicum: mainly Cantonese MCQ Test: English Entry Requirement Enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives registered with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong. CNE Points This course is awarded with: 12 CNE points for lecture 5 CNE points for practicum 1 CNE point for laboratory visit
