Boys and girls all over theworld are a little worriedabout coronavirus, alsoknown by its code name
COVID 19.
COVID 19 sounds a bit like amission in a spy movie,
doesn’t it? So what’s thefuss? And why is every
channel on TV showing thisthing?
The playgrounds are closed.
The movie theatres areclosed. Even the video game
store is closed! IS the worldcoming to an end?
Adults who are close to usare the best source of
information.
That could be your mom, dador even a teacher.
Viruses aren’t new. They havelived among us for many,
many years and anyone in anypart of the world can catch
one. That is why we havealways practiced washing ourfood and washing our hands
before eating food. Butsome viruses are
new and that prevents usfrom fully preparing for
them. This is what makescoronavirus such a big deal—we did not prepare for a newvirus. Imagine coronaviruslike a microscopic burglar
trying to get into your bodyto make you sick. If it does
get inside your body youhave what is called an
immune system to fightagainst it.
Your immune system is soadvanced!
It consists of white blood
cells that are likesuperheroes keeping watch in
your blood and waitingto attack invaders, likeviruses and bacteria.
Your immune system gets
even stronger when you eatyour fruits and veggies and
other healthy foods that arefull of vitamins and minerals!
But what happens when yourimmune system has
a hard time fighting offcoronavirus?
Many kids don’t
feel any different at all andsome might feel a little sick.
Coronavirus can
cause a fever, a stomachache and make us cough and
sneeze. If you feel sick, tell your parents.
All of us have a role toplay in stopping coronavirus. The best way to get rid of
pesky viruses is bywashing your hands as often
as you can with soap andwater while you sing thehappy birthday song— so
that you spend at least 30seconds washing.
Does it
really take 30 seconds tosing the birthday song? Go
ahead, try it!
Coronavirus is spreadthrough droplets in
the air released by peoplewho are infected by the virus
— when they cough andsneeze. Because these
droplets can get on yourhands, you should try tokeep your hands off your
face and out of your mouth. Many people choose to covertheir nose and mouth with a
mask.
If you have to cough orsneeze, do it in your elbowand try not to touch others
or get too close to thembecause you never know ifthey might be sick. This is
called social distancing.
The great news is we live in aworld that is smart and
tough. As a matter of factthe world has seen
pandemics* likecoronavirus before! All theright people are working tofight coronavirus aroundthe clock to keep us safe.
*A pandemic is when adisease is spread to
a lot of people throughoutthe world.
So remember, you don’t haveto worry.
We’re all in this together.
