the utopIan ImagInatIon of h. g. Wells

    summary

The paper deals with H. G. Wellss intellectual development and provides an overview of his literary career from the point of view of Wellss utopian imagination. The beginnings of Wellss literary career were marked by the spirit of anthropological pessimism, strongly manifested in his resolutely dystopian first novel The Time Machine (1895), and generally in evidence in his literary output of the final decade of the 19th century. However, the new century brought a shift in Wellss literary and social preoccupations: starting from 1902, he acted as part of an open conspiracy of scientists, industrialists and intellectuals, the purpose of which was to establish a benevolent world government. As a result, utopian projections predominated in his fiction and essays for almost four decades, in the course of which Wells put in a lot of effort trying to contribute to preserving world peace and fighting against imperialism. Sadly, in the final analysis his aspirations proved utopian, and the effects of his efforts aimed at preventing the outbreak of World War Two proved negligible. Deeply disappointed, in his final years Wells returned to the anthropological pessimism of his early career, thus completing a full circle in his intellectual development.

assIa djeBBar and uncoverIng / dIscoverIng Women

    summary

The topic of this discourse is writing, that is to say uncovering and discovering the History of women in Algeria. Faced with mortality, men try to survive and leave a written trace. Hence, that is the junction of Assia Djebbars writing with History: genealogical and historical trail is followed by another one, the goal of which is to reestablish the reality of History and the voice of women, and to incorporate them in official History, that is to say to verify their identity. The aforementioned topics would be analyzed through the prism of three novels: LAmour, la Fantasia, Loin de Mdine, La femme sans sepulture.

    summary

This paper focuses on race, power and gender stereotypes in (post)colonial discourse of the 20th century modern Indian literature. In the examples taken from short stories written by R.P. Jhabvala and R.K. Narayan, the Easterners (Orientals) and the Westerners (Occidentals) are seen through each others eyes, as the self and the other. Due to language constraints, cultural misunderstanding and cross-cultural differences, the existing binary opposites (metropolis = centre vs. colony = periphery, dominant vs. submissive, controlling vs. rebellious, rich vs. poor, strong vs. weak, male vs. female, young vs. old) are rendered even more complex, thus reflecting the fact that Orientalism and Occidentalism are intertwined to such an extent that it may be said they represent the two sides of the same mirror.

    (1) Brin, David, and Matthew Woodring Stover, Star Wars on Trial. Dallas, Texas, Benbella Books, 2006. ISBN 1-932100-89-X. p. 22:In contrast, the federation starship in Trek is vastly bigger, more complex, a veritable city cruising through space. Its captain hero is not only a warrior-knight, but also part scientist and part diplomat, a plenipotentiary representative of his civilization and father figure to his crew () the ship Star Treks Enterprise stands for something, every time we look at it. This travelling city is civilization. The Federations culture and laws, industry and consensus values like the Prime Directive are all carried in this condensed vessel, along with the dramatic diversity of its crew. Every single time there is an adventure, the civilization of the United Federation of Planets is put to the test, through its proxy, the hero-ship. And when the Enterprise passes each test so too, by implication, does civilization itself.A civilization that might even be worthy of our grandchildren.(2) Wells, H. G., The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. London, Gollancz Orion Publishing Group, 2001, ISBN 1-85798-887-6, p. 101:And before we judge them too harshly, we must remember what ruthless and utter destruction our own species has wrought, not only upon animals, such as the vanished bison and the dodo, but upon its own inferior races. The Tasmanians, in spite of their human likeness, were entirely swept out of existence in a war of extermination waged by European immigrants, in the space of fifty years. Are we such apostles of mercy as to complain if the Martians warred in the same spirit?(3) Wikipedia, at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds, 2010 08 14: Colonialism and imperialism. t the time of the Novel's publication the British Empire was in its most aggressive phase of expansion, having conquered and colonized dozens of territories in Africa, Australia, South America, the Middle East, South East Asia, and Atlantic and Pacific islands. It was one of a number of European empires, whose competition to conquer other nations eventually lead to the First World War. While Invasion Literature had provided an imaginative foundation for the idea of the heart of the British Empire being conquered by foreign forces, it was not until The War of the Worlds, that the reading public of the time were presented with an adversary so completely superior to themselves and the Empire they were part of. A significant motivating force behind the success of The British Empire was its use of sophisticated technology; the Martians, also attempting to establish an empire on Earth, have technology superior to their British adversaries. In writing The War of the Worlds, Wells turned the confident position of a reader in the British Empire on its head, putting an imperial power in the position of being the victim of imperial aggression and thus perhaps encouraging the reader to consider the nature of imperialism itself.(3) , , , . . . , , 2008. summaryThe aim of the paper is to ascertain why even nowadays, in the 21st century, there still remains an

apprehension in the science fiction genre that Others might arrive from outer space and attack us. The methodology of the paper is based on observing the situation in which H. G. Wells was. Namely, by writing the novel The War of the Worlds in 1898, he introduced this type of foreboding, which never ceased, either in literature or in film (for instance, in the fantasy serial Star Wars, and in the SF serial Star Trek), though it did undergo change. The paper attempts to offer brief, scientifically founded answers to two essential questions about these imagined extraterrestrial Others: their actual existence, and the extent of danger they represent. Apart from these two questions, the paper also examines one that is significantly more far-reaching: how and why we became afraid of them, and to which extent this fear was shaped by the social realities of colonialism and imperialism on Earth during 19th and early 20th century. The conclusion is that the apprehension of Others from outer space is justified, and that, despite these varied, external influences (social, historical, etc.) which did exist, the basic standpoint of science fiction on the hypothetical extraterrestrial Others does have an independent, inner meaning, rational and justified. In turn, this standpoint is the most important and is not a mere reflection of the social and political environment in which the SF authors live; therefore, in the paper, we refuse to give priority to the theory of reflection. Accordingly, we emphasize a methodological point crucial for SF studies: novum in SF is literally what it is, and is not a metaphor for anything else.

    summary

In the context of culture and art, imperialism can also be defined as the tendency to impose one system, one way of thinking, on a global plane. Ideology becomes esthetics, and it becomes axiology by negating the creative core of creation. What could also be perceived as a mode of imperial framework is the predominance of theory, which, from the position of the so called external approach, demands of literature to affirm its postulates by negating the particularity of interpretation. The authenticity of an artist can nullify the postulates of theory, which is proven in this paper on the example of discrepancy existing between the models of Northrop Fryes archetypal criticism and cycle of poems Late Summer by Stevan Raikovi. Distinctive semantization of the adjective late deconstructs Fryes scheme and thus demands not only boundlessness of artistic creation, but also an independent interpreter.

the Importance of serBIan natIonal theatres edItIon ColleCtion of DramatiC Works

    summary

The primary task of Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad was the preservation of national individuality of Serbs in Hungary; the theatre contributed to cultivation and propagation of Serbian language, general popular education, preservation of our tradition, but also to the creation of national ideology. Serbian National Theatres publishing activity was of great importance: several months after the launch of The Theatre journal, in 1872, the edition Collection of Dramatic Works, featuring both works by Serbian authors and translations, was established as well. The total of 48 volumes was published, ten of which were reprints. Works by Serbian authors were prevalent in the edition, 27 original dramatic texts were presented, and as many as 23 out of 43 plays were referenced as comic plays. The edition facilitated the procurement of texts for traveling and amateur theatre companies. Apart from comic plays School Supervisor, Congratulations, Love Letter by Kosta Trifkovi, Carp by Jovan Jovanovi Zmaj, and others, several important histories (Maksim Crnojevi and Pera Segedinac by Kosti) were published as well. When it came to translations, Shakespeares Othello and Romeo and Juliet were the most important ones. On one hand, the edition Collection of Dramatic Works had to please the taste of the reading public, and, on the other, to present important dramatic works.
