ON OGeneral Product Specification, GPS-07-01, defines the specifications for HydroTech Systemsstandard MisAligning Flanges. MisAligning Flanges with alternate requirements can be designedand manufactured but are outside the scope of this document, although this Specification may bereferenced in part.

    1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

A MisAligning Flange (MAF) is a metal-to-metal sealed ball-joint connector designed to bolttogether two pipelines with misaligned axes. The MAF, illustrated in Figure1, is particularlyapplicable to subsea flowline, pipeline, lateral pipeline and riser connections where minimum onbottom assembly time will result in significantly reduced job costs.

Primary sealing of the MAF is accomplished by a proprietary metal seal design. The metalsealing criteria is the same as that specified by the ASME for ring-joint flanges. Reliable metalsealing requires sufficient seal make-up load to result in plastic deformation of the seal contactsurfaces. In addition, the prescribed Stud and Nut tightening for the MAF at make-up exceedsthe thrust load resulting from the design or test pressure. The resulting connection has atightening factor greater than one. Sealing integrity is maintained at any angle of misalignmentwith the seal being relatively insensitive to externally applied bending loads at all operatingpressures. The latter is not true for flanges with R or RX type gaskets or raised face flangeswith flat gaskets. A secondary o-ring seal is provided for the purpose of testing the primaryMetal Seal. Instead of pressurizing the entire pipeline, a test port in the Housing may be used

to apply hydraulic pressure to the annulus between the o-ring and Metal Seal to verify the metalsealing integrity after the MAF is tightened.

The assembled MAF, with its Studs and Nuts only hand-tight, may be used as a single swivelfor spool piece tie-ins whereby the o-ring provides a bi-directional seal to the rated pressure ofthe MAF. Once the MAF has performed its alignment function and the Studs and Nuts aretightened, it is then statically metal-sealed and the Ball resists rotating when external momentsare applied. The metal sealing integrity may be verified by the annulus test feature previouslydescribed.

Although not recommended, the MAF may be connected subsea to join pipelines wherebysubsea assembly and make-up of the MAF is accomplished by divers using the same tools andprocedures required to make-up a standard flange. When doing so, the Retainer Flange can berotated during installation for stud hole alignment. Alternatively, for connecting a subseapipeline utilizing a MAF, the butt-weld by flange configuration is recommended. The MAFflange and a mating pipeline flange are connected instead; thereby, avoiding possible damage tothe Ball when stabbing it into the Housing and fouling of the Metal Seal by entrapped seabedsediment. The MAF is available in two standard configurations, each having a variety of optionalequipment. The butt-weld by butt-weld configured MAF is illustrated as Figure 1. Thebutt-weld by flange MAF configuration, illustrated as Figure 2 with an RTJ groove, may be

ON Oprovided with an RF flange or Swivel-Ring Flange with either face when specified by thepurchaser. Available optional equipment is shown in Figure 3.

HydroTech Systems maintains an inventory of MisAligning Flanges up to 900 ANSI rating innominal sizes from 4 inches to 16 inches. Other sizes up to 60 inches and pressure ratings to2500 ANSI and 20,000 API can be designed and manufactured. With reference to Figure 4,approximate dimensional data for common sizes and pressure ratings of butt-weld by butt- weldMisAligning Flanges is tabulated on sheet 10.

    2. DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

MisAligning Flanges designed to this General Product Specification are in accordance with theASME Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 2, unless another recognized code isspecified by the purchaser. In accordance with ASME B16.5 and MSS SP-44, if the minimumyield strength (SMYS) of the standard material for the MAF Housing and Ball is less than theSMYS of the matching pipe material, the wall thickness at the weld-ends will be increased bythe ratio of the yield strengths. The outside diameter of the MAF Housing and Ball weld-endsis increased as a result of the increased wall thickness and the bore is the same as the matchingpipe.

MAF Studs and Nuts are designed to be torqued unless stud tensioning is specified by thepurchaser. When completely tightened, the MAF is designed for the Ball to resist rotating,

when an external moment is applied, up to at least the bending yield strength of a comparablerated pipe.

The MAF is designed for a maximum misalignment of 10 off its center axis in any plane as

years of actual service has demonstrated that normal production and inspection pigs can bepassed when fully misaligned.

    3. MATERIALS AND COATINGS

Standard materials and coatings for Misaligning Flanges are tabulated below along with theappropriate HydroTech Material Specification (HMS) and HydroTech Coating Specification

(HCS). All materials listed below comply with NACE MR0175 incorporating Class III bolting. For buried pipelines, Class II reduced hardness bolting should be specified. The appropriatestandard material for the MAF Housing and Ball is based on the nominal pipe size and hascontrolled carbon equivalency for enhanced weldability. The MAF Assembly is externallyprotected by a single coat of high build epoxy per HCS-13 (white).

    4. QUALITY ASSURANCE

The part and heat numbers of each MAF pressure containing component are steel stamped oretched. Each Assembly also has a unique serial number steel stamped on the outside diameterof the Housing for compete material traceability. Dimensional inspection reports and materialtest reports for each pressure containing component are maintained on file. All pressurecontaining welds are 100% radiographed per ASME, Section VIII, Division 1, Part UW-51.Each MAF Assembly is annulus tested to 1.5 times the design pressure of the specified ANSI orAPI class rating for a minimum of 1 hour. Every MAF is shipped with HydroTech SettingInstructions.

Upon request, up to two sets of Quality Assurance documentation will be provided for allMisAligning Flanges. The documentation shall consist of the following:

    Certificate of Conformance

Material Test Reports for pressure containing components

NDE Reports for radiography of welds

Annulus Test Procedure, HQA-464, and Test Chart

    HydroTech Setting Instructions, HSI-2
