“The Vibrant Parish – a place to encounter the living Christ” Patriarch Sviatoslav

THE ONLY SALVATION

There is only One Salvation for everyone. After miraculously feeding five thousand people,

Jesus went up the mountain to pray. He told his disciples to take the boat and sail to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Night was approaching and a storm arose on the sea. The apostles fought with the high winds and waves but could not reach the shore. Just before dawn, they saw a figure walking on the water. The apostles cried out in fear for they thought that this was a ghost which wanted to drown them in the stormy sea. Jesus calmed them, saying: “It is I, do not be afraid!” The apostle Peter doubted that this was the Lord; he did not believe. In order to dispel his doubt, Peter asked Jesus to allow him to walk on the water towards Him. At first, Peter walked easily on the water, but because his faith was weak, he began to sink and cried out: “Lord, save me!” Jesus extended His hand and pulled Peter out of the water and said: “How little faith you have! Why did you falter?”

In this Holy Gospel according to Matthew, we find three teachings:

1. How almighty God is - walking on the water and calming the stormy sea, able to control the laws of nature. 2. About strong faith and distrust. 3. About help and rescue from God during the difficult times of our life. On the stormy sea, the apostles felt abandoned

and helpless. But Jesus remembered them. He came down from the mountain, and not having a boat, He walked across the turbulent water, saved the apostles, especially Peter, who doubted.

Is it not the same with us, when the sea of life brings us trials and difficulties? Then it seems to us that God has abandoned us, that we are alone and have no way out, that there is no rescue and we will die. We need to remember and believe that we have One Salvation - Jesus Christ.

He will always come to our rescue when we ask in faith: “Lord, save me!” And, receiving God’s support and help, let us not doubt that it is He Who saved us, thinking that this was coincidence or inevitable. We give God everything or nothing. For when we begin to falter, when our thoughts are divided, then the basis of life is ruined, it slides out from under our feet. Then, like the apostle Peter we will die spiritually, abandoning our faith or losing it completely.

Let us cast out doubt and, with faith and hope, rely on the help of the Lord in all aspects of life. For, “You will receive all that you pray for, provided you have faith!” (Mt. 21, 22)

ЄДИНИЙ ПОРЯТУНОК

Для всіх Єдиний Порятунок. Після чудесного нагодування п’яти тисяч

людей, Ісус пішов на гору молитися, а учням сказав переплисти човном на другий бік Галилейського моря. Наступила ніч і на морі здійнялася буря. Апостоли боролися з вітром і хвилями, та не могли причалити до берега. І ось, під ранок, вони побачили постать, що ступала по воді. Апостоли від жаху закричали, бо думали, що це привид, який хоче погубити їх в розбурханому морі. Ісус заспокоїв їх словами: ,,Це я, не бійтеся!” Апостол Петро засумнівався, що це Господь, не вірив. І що б розвіяти сумніви попросив Ісуса дозволу прийти до Нього по воді. Спочатку Петро йшов по воді, але тому, що віра його була слабка, став тонути і закричав: ,,Господи, рятуй мене!” Ісус простягнув йому руку, витягнув з води і сказав: ,,Маловіре, чого засумнівався?”

У цьому святому Євангелії від Матея, ми маємо три повчання для нас:

1. Про Божу всемогутність - ходіння по воді і втихомирення бурі всупереч законам природи. 2. Про віру сильну і недовір’я. 3. Про допомогу і порятунок від Бога у важних обставинах життя. На розбурханому морі апостоли почували себе

покинутими і безпомічними. Але Ісус пам’ятав про них. Він зійшов з гори і не маючи човна, ішов по поверхні води, втихомирив бурю, врятував апостолів, а зокрема Петра, що сумнівався.

Чи не таке і в нас з вами, коли життєве море приносить нам випробування, труднощі? Тоді нам здається, що Бог нас покинув, що ми одні і немає виходу, що порятунку немає і ми загинемо. Треба лише пам’ятати і вірити, що маємо Єдиний Порятунок — Ісус Христос. Він завжди прийде нам на допомогу, коли з вірою закличемо: ,,Господи, рятуй мене!” А діставши підтримку і допомогу Божу, не сумніваймося, що це Він нас вирятував, не думаймо, що це збіг обставин, або неминуче. Богові віддають або все, або нічого. Бо коли ми починаємо вагатися, коли наші думки роздвоюються, тоді основа життя руйнується, вислизає з-під ніг, як у апостола Петра і тоді ми гинемо духовно, стаємо маловірами, або зовсім втрачаємо віру.

Тому відкиньмо сумніви і з вірою і надією уповаймо на поміч Божу у всіх обставинах життя. Бо, ,,І все, чого проситимете в молитві з вірою — одержите!” (Мт. 21,22)

History of the Fast of the Dormition

The first mention made of the Fast of the Dormition occurs only in the ninth century. Just as the Petriwka and Pylypiwka, so too, this fast came into practice not by way of ecclesiastical legislation, but by way of custom. For this reason, many disputes arose in Greece regarding its existence, prescriptions, and duration. The Evergetes Typicon of the eleventh century does not mention this fast, nor does the Typicon of the year 1136 of the Pantocrator Monastery in Constantinople. Similarly, the Typicons of St. Theodore the Studite and St. Athanasius of Athos up to the fourteenth century do not speak of the Fast of the Dormition. Of the ancient typicons, the first to mention the Fast of the Dormition was the Typicon of the Greek Nicolo-Casulan Monastery of the twelfth century in Calabria, Italy. Here, on the first of August, there is this following note: “Patriarch of Constantinople, Nicholas I (895-925), concerning the Forty Days Fast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God says: “We have another fast, called the fast of the Most Holy Mother of God, beginning on the first of August, which is mentioned by the Seventh Council of Nicea (920).’’’ We find one earlier mention of the Fast of the Mother of God in the letter of Pope Nicholas I (858-867) to the Bulgarians. In this letter, he writes: “The holy Roman Church has from earliest times the custom of observing the following fasts: the Forty Days Fast before the Pasch, after Pentecost, before the Assumption of Mary the Mother of God, and also before the Nativity of our Lord.” This letter is regarded by some to be of dubious authority. In the work “On Three Forty Days Fasts”, which is credited to the Antiochian Patriarch, Anastasius Sinaite (6c), mention is made of the Fast of the Dormition as a fast that was separated from the Fast of St. Peter, for originally it extended from the Sunday of All Saints to the feast of the Dormition; later the month of July was eliminated from the Fast of St. Peter. The monks of Athos, around 1085, queried the Patriarch of Constantinople, Michael the Grammaticus about the various fasts and in particular about the Fast of the Dormition. His answer was: “In the month of August there was a fast at one time, but it was transferred so that it would not coincide with a pagan fast. Even now, however, many people fast at that time, in order to protect themselves from sicknesses.” During the eleventh and twelfth centuries the fast of the Dormition came to be observed in the Byzantine empire more and more frequently. In order to encourage the faithful to observe this fast, Archbishop Athanasius of Caesarea, Palestine (c.1090), published the results of his special research concerning this fast. In this he writes, “The holy Fathers and the holy patriarchs had handed down to us the fast before the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, which is observed by all the cities and countries of the orthodox, especially the blessed and great city of Constantinople, as well as the Great Church.” Finally, this author concludes that this fast was already practiced up to the time of Emperor Leo the Wise (886-911). The issue of the fast of the Dormition was the theme for discussion at the Council of Constantinople (1166) during the reign of Patriarch Luke Chrysobergas (1156-1169) and Emperor Emmanuel Comnen (1143-1180). The council approved the practice of this fast.

ІСТОРІЯ УСПЕНСЬКОГО ПОСТУ Перші згадки про Успенський піст маємо щойно з IX

століття. Як Петрівка й Пилипівка, так і цей піст увійшов у практику не дорогою церковного законодавства, а через звичай. З цієї причини у Греції було багато суперечок як щодо існування цього посту, так і щодо його приписів і тривання.

Про цей піст нічого не згадує Евергетицький устав з XI ст. ані устав царгородського Пантократорського монастиря з 1136 року.

Подібно й Устави святого Теодора Студита і святого Атанасія Атонського ще до XIV сторіччя не говорять про Успенський піст. З давніх типіконів першу згадку про Спасівку має типікон грецького Николо-Касулянського монастиря з XII ст. в Калабрії, Італія. Тут на перше серпня є така заввага: "Царгородський патріярх Миколай І (895-925) про Чотиридесятницю Успення Пресвятої Богородиці: "Є в нас ще инший піст, званий Пресвятої Богородиці, що почина-ється першого серпня і про який згадує Сьомий Собор у Нікеї 920 року".

Ранішу згадку про Богородичний піст знаходимо в посланні папи Миколая І (858-867) до болгар, де він пише: "Свята римська Церква має з давніх-давен звичай дотримуватися таких постів: 40 днів перед Пасхою, після П'ятдесятниці, перед Успенням Богоро-диці, а також перед празником Господнього Різдва". В автентич-ності цього послання деякі автори сумніваються.

У творі "Про три Чотиридесятниці", що його приписують антіо-хійському патріярхові Анастасієві Синаїтові (VI ст. ) говориться про Успенський піст як такий, що відділився від Петрівки, бо вона первісно тривала від неділі Всіх святих до празника Успення, а відтак з Петрівки був відокремлений липень.

Атонські монахи приблизно в 1085 році запитували царгород-ського патріярха Миколая Граматика про пости, а особливо про Успенський піст. Відповідь патріярха була така: "У серпні був перед тим піст, але його перенесено, щоб не сходився з поганським постом, що був у тому часі. Одначе і тепер ще багато людей постять у тому часі, щоб оберегти себе від недуг".

Успенський піст у візантійській державі в ХІ-ХІІ століттях почав щораз більше входити в життя. Архиєпископ Палестинської Кесарії Анастасій, що жив близько 1090 року, щоб заохотити вірних до зберігання цього посту, видає про нього окрему розвідку, у якій пише: "Піст перед Успенням Пресвятої Богородиці передали нам святі Отці й божественні патріярхи, його чесно дотримуються усі міста і країни православних, а передусім велике й щасливе місто Константинополь та Велика Церква". Укінці, автор робить висновок, що цей піст уже був у практиці ще до цісаря Лева

Мудрого (886-911). Успенський піст був темою нарад Царгород-ського Собору 1166 року за патріярха Луки Хрисоверга (1156-1169) і цісаря Мануїла Комнена (1143-1180). Собор підтвердив практику цього посту.
