Unique features of the course include: • The course is designed to address prob-

lems due to lack of necessary skills among health workers in malaria control in the Southeast Asia region.

• The curriculum will utilize a performance-based training approach, focus on develop-ing the participant’s skills, knowledge and attitudes needed in planning, designing, implementing and evaluating of a training course.

• Team training will use student-centered and interactive participatory approaches where participants are encouraged to ap-ply both their previous experiences and newly acquired knowledge in group work to solve the problems of malaria control, especially those related to training needs.

Brief report on the External Competency Assessment on malaria microscopy in Malaysia and Myanmar

Birthday Corner

Malaria diagnosis relies dependently on its blood film examiners known as malaria microscopists. Accurate detection in malaria microscopy is important for diag-nosing malaria cases which causes mortality and morbidity in man. WPRO and SEARO, in coordination with ACTMalaria, collaborated to develop a bi-regional network to support Competency Assessment/Quality Assurance for malaria microscopy. The 12th and 13th planned series of assessment success-fully happened in Malaysia and Myanmar respectively. This was the second assessment for both countries. Malaysia The place of assessment occurred in Kuala Lumpur, Insti-tute for Medical Research (IMR), Ministry of Health from 16 to 20 April 2007. An ACTMalaria Alumni and ‘expert’ in Thai malaria microscopy Mr. Suebskul Sakolvaree, from the Laboratory Reference Center for Vector Borne Dis-eases in Thailand, assisted Mr. Ken Lilley, the Assess-ment Facilitator from Australian Army Malaria Institute. Mr. Lilley is a Quality Manager and Scientist.

Of the ten participants, two were regarded as ’experts.’ They were Muhamad Shafie Bin Bakar and Aming Bin Jamir. Myanmar The place of assessment occurred in Yangon, Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme Center, Ministry of Health from 23 to 27 April 2007. Pre-workshop theory tests were used to calculate the general knowledge of every participant. Mr. Lilley facilitated the assessment. Of the twelve participants, two were regarded as ‘experts’ and they were Daw Thida Oo and Daw Nan Yee Yee Win. Noted Issues Successful events do not leave without key issues. Here are some of them that relates to having external assess-ments: • Language barrier • Grading classifications • Augmented schedules/ Diverse culture (eg. Having

Prayer sessions)
