    RICS aCCRedIted CouRSeS

    RICS oers proessionals who would like to join the organisation a large choice o accredited courses

    all over the world. In continental Europe alone there are over 40 higher education providers working together

    with RICS, providing graduates with the opportunity to become members ater completing the Assessment

    o Proessional Competence* (APC) and passing the Final Assessment*.

    RICS accredits courses all over Europe with the aim o preparing proessionals or the Assessment o

    Proessional Competence. The accreditation process is managed by the RICS Europe Continental Standards

    Board (CESB) and relies on experienced RICS academics and practitioners assessing each property degree

    to ensure that there is both an appropriate curriculum and the resources in place to enable its delivery and

    to meet the high standards demanded by RICS.

    Universities are visited every ew years by members o the CESB. In addition, a strict RICS quality assurance

    system is in place. The accreditation process is demanding and highly valued by universities.

    RICS aims to ensure that graduates have a stimulating and challenging education to prepare them well or

    their proessional career.

    I you are studying on a part-time postgraduate RICS-accredited course, you can enrol or the APC

    as soon as you register or your course. You can then start your APC while studying and go through

    the Final Assessment* ater graduation.

    If you are not a student on an RICS accredited course :

    There are three other routes to membership i you are not a student on an RICS accredited course:

    Adaptation route for professionals who have graduated from a non-accredited degree or have an RICS

    approved proessional qualifcation, and have studied 450 hours (113 contact hours and sel-study) rom

    the fnal year o an RICS accredited course Senior Professional route for experienced professionals who are in a senior industry position and have

    one or more university degrees

    Academic route for academics teaching or researching on an RICS accredited degree. There is no APC

    training or this route. Candidates are assessed on the basis o a portolio they produce about their

    academic, teaching and research experience.

    The preparation towards achieving RICS membership was extremely useful as it pus-

    hed me to keep on improving my professional knowledge after I graduated.

    RICS offers plenty of life-long learning opportunities through events and seminars,

    which are a great source of additional professional knowledge. Also, lling in the

    records of progress throughout the APC process helped me to clearly see the core

    of the problem and nd better solutions to projects I was dealing with at work.

    During your training, you have the opportunity to

    refne your skills and knowledge. As a candidate

    you can select your individual set o core and

    optional competencies*. Depending on the APC

    Pathway, these could include, or instance, risk

    management, procurement and tendering, or capital

    taxation. There are also mandatory competencies*

    or all chartered surveyors every RICS trainee gains

    knowledge and experience in rules o conduct,

    ethics and proessional practice, communication,

    business planning and management. To ensure that

    you get the support you need, you will be backed

    by a Counsellor* and a Supervisor*, who will guide

    you and discuss with you your progress.

    At least your Counsellor needs to be a chartered

    surveyor who knows how to mentor you through

    your personal development and help you achieve

    the RICS proessional qualifcation.

    To support you in your APC, the interactive online tool MyAPC* is available to continental European RICS

    trainees, making the APC procedure totally paperless.

    MyAPC, available 24/7, is your personal space where you can manage all your documents and submissions

    as well as plan your structured training, wherever you are.

    On registering or your APC in continental Europe, we will provide you with your login and password allowing

    you to access your own space, create your profle and upload your submissions as you progress towards

    the Final Assessment. Your Counsellor*, Supervisor* and Assessors will also have online access to the

    documents they need to sign o or read. In addition, RICS stas are always at hand to help you.

    Once you have received your login you will be able to register here : www.joinmyapc.eu.

    Now more than ever, clients are looking for reliable property professionals who respect a certain code

    of ethics, the principles of which are fundamental to RICS. In this context, the RICS Rules of Conduct,

    by which each RICS member has to abide, are key in providing clients with additional

    guarantees in terms of quality, integrity and professionalism.

    aChIevIng pRofeSSIonal membeRShIp

    This is the stage at which your proessional competence is assessed. The Final Assessment* interview is run

    by a panel o two to three experienced chartered surveyors. It lasts about one hour and is based on your

    submission, which you should hand in approximately one month beore. First you give a presentation

    on a chosen project. Then you will be interviewed on your presentation, training and experience achieved

    in relation to your mandatory, core and optional competencies. There will also be questions on current issues

    related to the proession and Rules o Conduct*. At least one o the assessors comes rom the same APC

    Pathway as you. Depending on your proessional experience, you could go to the Final Assessment* within

    months (Graduate 3), one year (Graduate 2) or two years (Graduate 1). Have a look at your APC calendar

    on page 12 to start planning or your proessional membership.

    Since the very beginning of my professional career, I knew that only RICS qualication would enable me to

    make a difference in this profession. Following one of the RICS accredited courses has denitely been

    key for me to expand my knowledge and provided me with a rm background for my APC preparation.

    The advice I would give to anyone sitting the nal assessment interview is to read foreign property

    press and pick up on current topics in order to be able to form an opinion on any given issue.

    Your glossarYRICS teRmInology

    Assessment of Professional Competence: the APC is a continuous assessment designed by RICS to help

    you acquire the excellence and skills expected o an MRICS. During that period, you will be an RICS trainee.

    The length o your APC will depend on the extent o your proessional experience and the time you need to

    reach the required competencies* under your chosen APC Pathway. At the end o the APC comes the Final

    Assessment*, an interview with two to three chartered surveyors.

    Chartered surveyor: RICS members may call themselves chartered surveyor. They help to sustain the use

    o land and unlock the long-term value o property. Chartered surveyors are key to efcient markets in land,

    property and the environment without which important world economies would not be able to unctioneectively.

    Competencies: skills or abilities you need to perorm a specifc task or unction. They are based on attitudes

    and behaviours as well as knowledge.

    Counsellor: the Counsellor, always a chartered surveyor, works in partnership with the Supervisor* and signs

    o your record o progress*. It is the Counsellor who helps you decide when you are ready to apply or the

    Final Assessment*. They also sign o all the documents you submit and ensure that your training meets the

    needs o your chosen APC Pathway.

    Critical Analysis: a document describing projects you have worked on during your training covering the

    key issues, options, your proposed solution, conclusion and analysis o experience gained (3,000 wordssupported by plans and graphs).

    Final Assessment: interview where a panel o chartered surveyors ascertains whether you have achieved

    the necessary competencies* to become an RICS member.

    MyAPC: personal online space reserved or APC trainees, Counsellors, Supervisors and Assessors.

    Here you can manage all your documents and submissions, and plan your structured training.

    Professional Development: skills and knowledge you acquire attending conerences, seminars or

    work-shops. Lielong learning can also be undertaken through personal and inormal learning, voluntary

    or charity work. I you are currently ollowing a part-time postgraduate RICS-accredited course, this counts

    towards the hours required.

    Quarterly reports (Record of Progress): they summarise in 500 words how your experience and training

    meet the competency* requirements.

    Record of Competence: evidence that you meet the competency* requirements.

    Rules of Conduct: under the Royal Charter and Bye-Laws, all RICS members are expected to comply with

    regulations governing their conduct. These include provisions relating to the keeping o members accounts,

    proessional indemnity insurance (PII) and general standards o behaviour. For ull inormation on the RICS

    Supervisor: normally a chartered surveyor responsible or giving candidates guidance on their training and

    day-to-day work.
