LopresidioelReverendoJ.H.Barrows.SwamiVivekanandaseenterodeleventoyconelpermisoybeneplacitodeSaradaDevi,esposadeSriRamakrisha,sumaestro,decidioasistir.SaliodeBombayel31demayode1893yllegoaVancouver3mesesantesdelcomienzodelevento,sinningunacredencialqueleacreditasecomorepresentanteoficialdeningunareligion.RecorrioAmericacomocaminante,vestidodeamarilloycon turbante.EnBostonconocioaunprofesorde launiversidaddeHarvard,Mr.Wrightquienlopresentoasuamigopersonal,elReverendoBarrows,diciendolequeeramasinstruidoquetodoslosprofesoresdeHarvardpuestosjuntos.

Uno a uno, losrepresentantesdelasreligionesfueronleyendolosdiscursosquehabıa npreparado.SwamiVivekanandadeclinoelusodelapalabrahastalesesiondelatarde.Notenıanadapreparado.Cuandonotuvomasalternativapasoalpodioy,consuimpresionantepresenciaydescartandotodoslosprotocolos,comenzosudiscursodiciendo:SistersandBothersofAmerica.-HermanasyHermanosdeAmerica.

Antecedents

TheWorldparliamentofReligionswasorganizedinSeptember1893aspartoftheWorldColumbianExpositionwhichwashelddocelebratethefourhundredanniversaryoftheDiscoveryofAmerica,andwiththeaimtoputtogetherandtolistentoalltheaccreditedrepresentativesofeachreligion.ItwaspresidedbytheReverendJ.H.Barrows.SwamiVivekanandaheardabouttheeventandwiththepermissionandblessingofSaradaDevi,WifeofSriRamakrishna,hismaster,hedecidedtogo.HeleftIndiafromMumbayonMay31standarrivedtoVancouver threemonthsbefore thebeginningof the event,withno credential toaccredit him as a representative of any religion whatsoever. He walked throughAmerica,dressedinyellowandwithaturban.InBostonhemetaHarvardprofessor,Mr.Wright,whointroducedhimtohispersonalfriend,rev.Barrows,statingthattheSwamiwasmorelearnedthatalloftheHarvardProfessorsputtogether.

TheparliamentbeganitssessionsonSeptember11thwithrepresentativesfromeachreligionandmorethan4,000peopleintheauditorium.Onebyone,therepresentativesofeachreligionreadthespeechesthattheyhadprepared.SwamiVivekanandapasseduntiltheafternoonsession.Hehadnothingprepared.Whenhehadnootheralternativehewalkedtothepodiumand,withhisimpressiveheightandpresence,discardingallprotocolshebeganhisspeechsaying:SistersandBrothersofAmerica

Then, all theaudience,movedby the familiarity and the contentof thesalutation,roseinapplause,andtheapplauseslastedformorethantwofullminutes,afterwhichSwamiVivekanandacontinuedwithashortspeech.TheBostonEveningTranscriptrecordedhispresenceintheparliamentinthefollowingmanner:

MyThanksalso,tosomeofthespeakersinthisplatformwho,referringtothedelegatesfromtheorienthavetoldyouthatthesemenfromfaroffnationsmaywellclaimthehonorofbearingtodifferentlandstheideaoftoleration.Iamproudtobelong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universalacceptance.Webelievenotonlyinuniversaltoleration,butweacceptallreligionsastrue.Iamproudtobelongtoanationwhichhasshelteredthepersecutedandtherefugeesofallreligionsandallnationsoftheearth.IamproudtotellyouthatwehavegatheredinourbosomthepurestremnantoftheIsraelites,whocametosouthernIndiaandtookrefugewithusintheveryyearinwhichtheirholytemplewasshatteredtopiecesbyRomantyranny.IamproudtobelongtothereligionwhichhasshelteredandisstillfosteringtheremnantoftheGrandZoroastriannation.Iwillquoteyou,brethren, a few lines from a hymnwhich I remember to have repeated frommyearliestboyhood,whichiseverydayrepeatedbymillionsofhumanbeings:'asthedifferentstreamshavingtheirsourcesindifferentplacesallmingletheirwaterinthesea, so,OLord, thedifferentpathswhichmen take throughdifferent tendencies,variousthoughtheyappear,crookedorstraight,allleadtoThee.'

Thepresentconvention,whichisoneofthemostaugustassemblieseverheld,isinitselfavindication,adeclarationtotheworld,ofthewonderfuldoctrinepreachedintheGita:WhosoevercomestoMe,throughwhatsoeverform,Ireachhim;allmenarestrugglingthroughpathswhichintheendleadtoMe.'

Sectarianism,Bigotry,anditshorribledescendent,fanaticism,havelongpossessedthisbeautifulearth.Theyhavefilledthisearthwithviolence,drencheditoftenandoftenwithhumanblood,destroyedcivilization,andsentwholenationstodespair.Haditnotbeenforthesehorribledemons,humansocietywouldbefarmoreadvancedthanitisnow.Buttheirtimeiscome;andIferventlyhopethatthebellthattolled this morning in honour of this convention may be the death knell of allfanaticism,ofallpersecutionswiththeswordorwiththepen,andofalluncharitablefeelingsbetweenpersonswendingtheirwaytothesamegoal.

Similaristhecasewithreligion.TheChristianisnottobecomeaHinduoraBuddhist,noraHinduoraBuddhisttobecomeaChristian.Buteachmustassimilatethespiritoftheothersandyetpreservehisindividualityandgrowaccordingtohisownlawofgrowth.
