    Methodology

This survey was done through DE online, the web

complement to Desktop Engineering magazine. An email

with a hyperlink to the survey form was sent out on

August 5, 2003. Results were tabulated on August 11,

2003. The email was sent to 2661 Desktop Engineering

subscribers who have opted in to receive surveys and who

have indicated that they evaluate, recommend, specify, or

authorize the purchase of finite element analysis (FEA)

software. The response rate was 6%, which is considered

above industry standard for an online survey.

    Summary

The typical respondent works in product design engineering with secondaryresponsibilities in systems design engineering, production engineering and/or basicresearch. Results show they are very involved in the purchase process.

AutoCad is the CAD/MCAD program most commonly in use. The respondents companytypically has at least six to more than 20 seats of CAD/MCAD installed. More than halfhave FEA software integrated with CAD/MCAD.

A wide variety of FEA packages are currently in use headed up by ANSYS, COSMOS-

Works MSC Nastran, and Pro/MECHANICA (PTC). Respondents companies are interestedin piloting several FEA packages in the next few months, most notably COSMOSWorksANSYS, and Pro/MECHANICA (PTO). Accuracy and specific functionality needed are citedas being the most important criteria in selecting FEA software. A CD is respondentspreferred method for piloting FEA software by a margin of more than 2 to 1.

Advertisements in trade magazines, and editorial content in trade magazines are howrespondents they learn about new FEA or analysis software products and/or releases.
