PEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES SOCIETY  Fellowship Award Application for 2009-2011 Instructions Completed applications for a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Fellowship Award must be received by February 1, 2009 for the award to be given on July 1, 2009. Goals: The goal of the Fellowship Award is to help increase the pool of highly trained pediatric infectious disease clinical scientists and to stimulate scholarly basic and clinical research in the following areas pertinent to pediatrics: public health/epidemiology, hospital epidemiology, clinical trials of antimicrobials, outcome research, pharmacokinetics, pathophysiology and molecular pathogenesis. One of the fellowship awards has been designated to support research related to viral respiratory diseases and will be funded by MedImmune, Inc. NOTE: The Society encourages applications for clinically applied/translational research. Eligibility: Candidates must possess a MD and/or PhD; selection preference will be given to physician scientists. The candidate must be at least a fir st year fellow in a Pediatric Infectious Diseases program i n North America at the time of application, and the award will be given for two subsequent years of training, during which time the applicant is expected to devote the major portion (approximately 75% of time) of those years conducting the research project under the direct supervision of a mentor who must be a PIDS member in good standing for at least one year. Support: The annual stipend will be $45,000 and will be given for two years, subject to review at t he end of the first year.  In case the award is given to the candidate in the last year of fellowship, only year one of the award will given to the award recipient. The stipend is intended to provide salary and benefits for the fellow. It is not intended to provide resources for a division's research program, nor to pay indirect costs of the institution. Application and Selection Process : The completed application and a letter of support from the applicant's mentor should be sent to the PIDS Headquarters office; Attn: PIDS Fellowship Awards Committee; 1300 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22209. The original and seven copies of the completed application and letter of support (no staples) should arrive at the PIDS office no later than February 1, 2009 .  Application must strictly adheres to the instructions; application or supporting documents received after the deadline date will not be considered. Each application will be reviewed by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Fellowship Awards Committee (see Review Criteria). Announcement of the awards will be made at the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet. The recipient and the mentor should be present to accept the award. Progress Report : A progress report must be prepared by recipients of the Fellowship Award and submitted by the following February to the PIDS office, in order to receive the second year of funding commencing July 1 of that year. The report should detail results accomplished to that date, problems encountered, if any, alterations in the original protocol that might be necessary, and the prospects for completion of the project in the two years enabled by the award. Publications, pending publications, or presentations to scientifi c meetings should also be submitted. The report will also be s ent to the Pharmaceutical Company that is s ponsoring the fellow's training. Final Report : At completion of the two- year funding period, the fellow must furnish in the format of the NIH grant progress report (PHS 2590, pages 11-14) a written summary of the research accomplished, the analyzed and tabulated data, and the conclusions and possible implications. Publications resulting from the project should be submitted. The report should be sent to t he PIDS office.  Fellowship Award Application for 2009-2011

Instructions

Completed applications for a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Fellowship Award must be received by

Review Criteria: The Fellowship Awards Committee will address and consider each of the following criteriain assigning the application’s overall score, weighing them equally for each application.

•  Clear commitment to ensure that a minimum of 75% of the applicant’s effort will be devoted directly tothe research project
