CHARL MARAIS: NEWS FROM THE NORTHCHARL MARAIS: NEWS FROM THE NORTHCHARL MARAIS: NEWS FROM THE NORTHCHARL MARAIS: NEWS FROM THE NORTH Business in Gauteng area was very slow at the start of 2010. I thought it is only in Cape Town that business start to work in February, but it seemed the trend was similar in the north. In February business started looking up, and prospects for the rest of the year became more positive.

Afrimat took over the operation of Blue Platinum in July 2009. At that stage Blue Platinum sold only 4 500 tons per month. In February 2010 we achieved 18 800 tons. We thank sales manager Anton Venter for bringing all the clients on board and for Louis Visser who is constantly producing aggregates at the right quality. We secured a 80 000 tons G1 order from Road Crete who is doing the new access road to Lanseria Airport. Wilhelm Nel and his mobile crushing team is assisting us on this order. Our aim for this year is to grow Blue Platinum to a consistent 30 000 tons per month quarry.

We had to stop producing at Harmony mine at the end of August 2009 due to amendments in Harmony’s environmental manage-ment plan (EMPR) that was not satisfactory to the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). This was resolved and we were allowed to recommence with production towards the end of February 2010. We expect Harmony to secure its fair market share this year.

The Kusile Power Station (near Witbank) is still going ahead despite various rumours that it will be delayed or stopped. The big G1 contract for Edwin of 330 000 tons is nearing completion, but we picked up another 100 000 ton G1 order from Lonerock who is building the new access road to Kusile.

New Appointments:

• Gert Opperman was appointed towards the end of 2009 to head up a team responsible for all our maintenance.

• Johan Swanepoel recently joined us as Sales Manager for the Witbank area.

• Theo Boshoff has joined Len’s team in the Mechanical Workshop.

We try to work with our ear close to the ground, exploring every possible opportunity for Afrimat. We try and stay humble and are always reminded by Psalms 127 that “The Lord blesses those who love Him in their sleep.”

Seldom do we consider ourselves to be boring or out of touch as communicators, yet oftentimes that's exactly what we are. We may be passionate about our mes-sage, but we don't understand how to craft it in a way that resonates with our audience. As a result, others tune us out, and we have difficulty influencing them.

Wireless technology has forever altered the way we communicate. These days, payphones are practically nonexistent, and landlines seem headed for obsoles-cence, too. It's hard even to remember how we lived before the advent of the mobile phones.

However, as wonderful as cell phones can be, we have to put up with the nuisance of dropped calls. From time to time, we get cut off in the middle of a sentence or realize that we've spent the last two minutes speaking into nothingness due to a dropped signal. Losing con-nection can be maddening, especially when it happens during an important conversation.

Leaders, like mobile phone users, experience the occasional frustration of losing connection with those around them. One moment it seems as if everyone is on the same page, and then suddenly there's disconnec-tion. People aren't getting the message. They're un-responsive. And, no matter how loud we shout, they don't hear us. What accounts for leaders losing connec-tion with the people on their teams? Let's examine a few of the causes, staying with the mobile phone analogy.

Connecting

"Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centred and that gives their work meaning."

- Warren Bennis

Malans admin staff moved to Tyger Valley Lock, Stock and Barrel

On 29 January 2010, after some months of planning and deliberation, the big day had finally arrived.

There was a sense of excitement in the air, but also some sadness as we left the home of “Malans”. The office in Airport Industria was a second home to some for over 20 years.

As with all well planned intentions we also experienced the usual hiccups… Firstly, Telkom let us down. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Our little problem was finally sorted out after many persuasive phone calls. Then to add further insult to injury, in the height of the summer heat, our air conditioning system packed up - “Welcome to Afrimat Sauna.”

Our new office is situated on the ground floor of the Tyger Valley Office Park. We are within walking distance from Tyger Valley Shopping Centre – a definite plus for the ladies. The offices are compact and modern. There is a great vibe in our new offices. We are definitely one step closer to being one big Afrimat family.

On a serious note, the main purpose of our new offices is to provide a central, efficient sales and marketing facility with a single quotation desk and customer call centre for Aggregates in the Western Cape. This office will also be the marketing hub, responsible for branding and advertising for the Afrimat Group.

The new occupants of Tyger Valley Office Park’s ground floor: (Front) Marlene Botha, Melanie du Preez, Maxwell Miselo

(Middle) Malcolm Knipe, Cynthia Gaji, Leonie Botha, Chantal de Maudave, Annalie Greyling

(Third row) Hylton Hale, Marshall Arendse, Michelle Sturrock, Marlene de Castro, Henrietta Samuels, Liesl Diedericks, Verona Carolissen, Sheila Quimpo

HEALTH & SAFETY THE 10 GOLDEN RULES

by Monty Coleman Managers often have great systems and practices in place to address health, safety and environmental management, but often these are seen as cosmetic or, in spite of all the documents on the walls and elsewhere stating the opposite, are viewed by staff as unimportant to managers.

To be visibly committed managers must engage the em-ployees in becoming involved in managing health, safety and environmental management. Here are ten golden rules of health and safety that employers could use in daily dealings with staff.

Rule 1 Rule 1 Rule 1 --- Remember you are working with people Remember you are working with people Remember you are working with people

Expect the best of them but do not burn them out. Treat people with dignity and respect.

Safe, healthy & environmentally friendly workplaces are built on a foundation of a culture of respect. What you say must be backed up by what you do. There is no point telling people you care about their health & safety if you do not care about your own health & safety.

Rule 2 Rule 2 Rule 2 --- Listen to and talk with your people Listen to and talk with your people Listen to and talk with your people

Communicate frequently, creating a non-hostile environment for communication. Be inclusive. Value and develop the people skills of supervisors and managers.

Good consultation is critical for effective safety, health & environmental management. Workers' knowledge of their work place and conditions is valuable information for any enterprise. Taking advantage of that knowledge is cost-effective and good management practice.

Rule 3 Rule 3 Rule 3 --- Fix things promptly Fix things promptly Fix things promptly

Don't let issues fester, and do not procrastinate. If you are really serious about something, you will give it prompt attention. Keep the affected people informed on progress.

When people who raised safety concerns with their supervisor see no outcome, they do not believe that safety, health & environmental management is really important to the supervisor and to management.

Rule 4 Rule 4 Rule 4 --- Make sure your paperwork is worth having Make sure your paperwork is worth having Make sure your paperwork is worth having

Regularly review your paperwork to check that it still contributes to the goal of making the work place safer, healthier & environmentally friendly. Keep your paperwork current, and make sure it is meaningful.

Rule 5 Rule 5 Rule 5 --- Improve competence in safety, Improve competence in safety, Improve competence in safety, healthhealthhealth &&& environmental managementenvironmental managementenvironmental management

People believe in the commitment of managers who are competent in safety, health & environmental management.

Rule 6 Rule 6 Rule 6 --- Encourage people to give you bad news Encourage people to give you bad news Encourage people to give you bad news

Being able to see what is wrong or what is likely to go wrong is a vital part of making the workplace safer, healthier & environmentally friendly. This means that employees must report areas and actions of concern. Where you deem the reports as unnecessary, be positive and thankful, and do not take your frustration out on the person – his or her next report might save a life.

Rule 7 Rule 7 Rule 7 --- Fix your workplace first Fix your workplace first Fix your workplace first

Before trying to implement advanced systems and practices, make sure you have the basics in place to make the workplace safer, healthier & environmentally friendly.

Rule 8 Rule 8 Rule 8 --- Measure and monitor risks that Measure and monitor risks that Measure and monitor risks that peoplepeoplepeople areareare exposed toexposed toexposed to

Be proactive, not reactive. Control risks at their source.

Monitoring exposure to the tasks and controlling risks from this information means you can act to make the work place safer, healthier & environmentally friendly before people are injured or become ill, or before harm is done to the environment.

Remember harm can be prevented, but once done, cannot be reversed.

Rule 9 Rule 9 Rule 9 --- Keep checking that what you Keep checking that what you Keep checking that what you areareare doingdoingdoing isisis working effectivelyworking effectivelyworking effectively

Are you achieving what you think you are? You may be very busy with managing safety, health & the environment, but do you know whether your effort is effective? Is your workplace safer, healthier & environmentally friendly? Keep monitoring. Keep measuring. Stay informed about new developments. Include safety, health & environment management in your daily performance planning and measurement.

Rule 10 Rule 10 Rule 10 --- Apply adequate resources in time and money Apply adequate resources in time and money Apply adequate resources in time and money

Being safer, healthier & environmentally responsible, con-sulting effectively, fixing hazards in the workplace - they all cost time and money. If you skimp on this, then it will show. The real cost is in the consequences, not in the resources. The direct benefits of application of resources are often not appreciated, as accidents or incidents that were prevented cannot be accounted. Indirect benefits may be seen indirectly in improved productivity and quality.

SAFCEC Sport Day On the 5

th of March 2010 it was the annual SAFCEC sport day

held at Somerset West Golf Club. This year Afrimat entered

two tug-of-war teams. The teams consist out of pullers from as

far as Worcester. In total seven teams entered the

competitions: Afrimat (2 teams), Baseline, Power, Martin and

East and ASLA (2 teams).

Anton Gerber, the national ladies team coach, showed the

pullers how tug of war works and what they must do during the

competition. The men started the battle of tug of war.

Afrimat A won against their first competitors. In the semi-finals

our teams were knocked out by ASLA and Power, and had to

battle each other for third and fourth places. After a titanic

battle Afrimat A won third place and the B team ended fourth.

Afrimat showed a lot of potential and with more practice could

have been the force to recon with. Our ten minutes of practice

before the competition just did not compare with ASLA’s three

months of training!

Well done to all who participated.

as Grey College is!

Ek is ongetroud,

maar het wel ‘n meisie.”

Bossie is haker vir Villagers. Hy en Louis het juis onlangs teen

mekaar gehaak.

OUTREACH: HUIS POPLAP DE LA BAT SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF - WORCESTER

One of our staff members at Afrimat Aggregates and her church cell group launched a project to assist 12 little girls aged 8 to 11, living in Huis Poplap, a girls residence at the De la Bat School for the Deaf. These girls are from homes in the wider North-Boland and the Karoo. Each of the girls have a hearing impairment, therefore are in need of the special education offered by the De La Bat School for the Deaf. Most of the girls are from homes where resources are extremely limited, and are therefore often in need of basic material items.

A manager at our Readymix operation got news of the dire needs of these girls and, together with a group of women from across the Western Cape, decided to reach out to this cause. A co-ordinated effort is made to find resources for the residence. They have also linked the outreach to a website: http://www.delightfullydivinewoman.co.za/News.html.

The reaction has been overwhelming and contributions have been streaming in. Clothes, toiletries, linen, curtains and bedding have been donated. Companies are getting involved with the supply of material to upgrade the facilities. Long term financial and physical assistance has already been pledged by individuals who have read the e-mail or responded to the website. This will help provide the much needed monthly income to look after these girls. There is a need for support to upgrade the facilities, for curtains and bedding. But most importantly, with winter on the doorstep, winter clothing is needed. Every donation, whether financial or material, makes a difference.

Items still needed most urgently:

1. School clothes:

• Golf shirts: 7-10 years R85 each, 11-14 years R90 each. • Shorts: 7-14 years R50 each. • Track suits: R320 per set.

2. Batteries for hearing aids - R30 for 6 batteries (lasts 1 week) - available at the school.

3. Night gowns, pyjamas and slippers. 4. Toiletry bags, clothes hangers. 5. Shoes. 6. Books, educational toys, board games, Bible story books. 7. Toiletries: soap, toothpaste, roll-on or spray, baby powder, lip-ice,

body cream.

For more information or assistance with this project, contact Lana Theart on 082 428 4689.

ANNUAL MEDICALS ARE THERE FOR A REASON

All operations are required by law to do medical surveillance and to record certain health measurements such as lung functionality and hearing ability. This is of critical importance for employers because preventative measures could be taken when problems are picked up. It forms a base for any workmen's compensation claims.

It is also important to employees because they are assured of an annual “check-up” on their medical condition and receive free counseling and advice. The medical records also enables them to obtain support from the state when diseases that are related to their occupation is detected.

Use the advice given to you by the sister, they are trained professionals.

30 April 2010 KLIP IN DIE BOS

There has been a sharp increase of internet

banking scam e-mails that appear to have

been sent by your bank, and contain a link to

a fake version of the bank’s website and

instructions to log on to the site to verify

your credentials with the bank. The

unsuspecting victim then provides bank

account details to an impostor (not to his/

her bank), and inevitably will find that their

money is drawn from their accounts - stolen.

These e-mails are sent out as spam to

numerous recipients and a variety of tricks

are used to make the internet banking scam

look like a legitimate process, such as

duplicating your bank’s legitimate logos and

other identifying information taken directly

from the legitimate website to fool victims

into divulging their logon details.

Most messages imply a sense of urgency or

an immediate risk to bank accounts or credit

cards if you fail to answer, in order to

increase the chances of a response.

Sometimes special offers and prizes may also

be promoted as incentives. Typically a

subject such as “Customer Login error!” or

“Internet Banking Account Security

Enhancement!” or “Re-Confirmed Your

Standard Bank Details”.

These criminals even indicate a false “from” -

address such as “Standard Bank <on-

[email protected]>”, leading you to

think that it is legitimate. Other tactics used

is to place links from the legitimate website

onto their message, or to ask you to click on

a link that appears correct, but if you read

the actual shortcut of the link, it takes you to

a totally different site - theirs!

The scammers have become better im-

postors, incorporating phrasing and wording

into the email that the bank's customers

would be familiar with from previous

authentic advisories. These are hoax emails

in which every single psychological ploy,

right from shocking, luring, scaring and

threatening are used by scam artists to get

their potential victims to fall in line.

Under no circumstances should you click on

the link provided in the e-mail as you will be

taken to a phoney scam site or possibly a

pop-up window that resembles the official

bank website.

Ensure that you only log on to your bank’s

internet banking by typing their official

website into the address bar, rather than

following links to the bank website. Dis-

regard any emails that advise otherwise. The

mere presence of your bank’s name (e.g.

http://www.scam-address.co.za/absa) does

not make it official. Here are some other

examples of false bank addresses used in

scam e-mails:

• http://emrcommunity.com/language/.i/w w w . N e d b a n s k . c o . z a/ i n d e x _ f i l e s /nedbank.htm

Con artists also use URLs that resemble the

name of the bank but are slightly altered by

adding, omitting or transposing letters.

Always remember that your bank will never

send you unsolicited emails asking for con-

fidential information, such as your Pass-

word, PIN, access code, credit card and

account numbers.

They will never ask you to validate or restore

your account access through email or pop-up

windows.

The banks are continuously working to

ensure your security against such schemes

(internet banking scams) and we suggest

that you use this short checklist to protect

yourself against attacks:

• Begin your Internet Banking session by manually typing the web address into your browser. Ensure that you use the official URL of your bank.

• Keep your access information secure (account number, user number, and all PIN numbers and passwords).

• Ensure you see a lock icon either at the top of the Internet browser window or at the bottom – depending on your browser.

• Install and regularly update the latest anti-virus software (internet banking and cell phone banking clients normally qualify for free first class commercial anti-virus software for their PC or cell phone).

• Refrain from banking at public terminals like internet café’s.

• Only provide credit card details to reputable companies. Look for the lock and key icon and security certificates when shopping online.

Change your PIN number and Password

regularly.

Remember: It is your responsibility to ensure

the safety of your money—whether it is in

the bank, or not.

Please convey this message to all your

friends and family members in order to

protect them from losing their money.
