NCAA REGIONAL - 2008, 2009, 2010 SAC CHAMPIONS - 2008, 2009 2

2010 POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE

SEASON REvIEWConsistency. Every athletics program strives for it and the Newberry College men’s golf program has achieved it at a regional and national level. For the last three years, Newberry has been one of the most dangerous golf programs in the Southeast Region and the scarlet and gray continued that trend in the 2009-10 season. Newberry earned a berth to the 2010 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional for the third consecutive year and spent much of the season ranked nationally in the top-25 of the Golf World/Nike Division II Coaches’ Poll.

The scarlet and gray came out of the gate red hot in the fall of 2009 at the Newberry-hosted Honda of Columbia Fall Classic at the Mid-Carolina Club in Prosperity, S.C. Entering three teams in the field of 16, Newberry’s top team churned out a record-breaking day tallying a new school record for team low for 18 and 36 holes.

Newberry’s first and second round scores, 278 and 273, were each the best in school history after the respective rounds were complete. The 36-hole stroke total of 551 shattered the previous low of 574 set at the 2008 edition of The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic.

Senior Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) was Newberry’s top individual competitor finishing in second place with a school record, at the time, 137 (66-71; -7) over 36 holes. Collard shot a first round 66 at the par-72, 6,633-yard course to break the previous 18-hole program record by one stroke.

Future 2010 South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) shot a 138 (70-68; -6) in his first collegiate tournament and tied for third place. Newberry’s B-squad finished the tournament in fifth place (293-280=573; -3) and the C-squad tied for ninth (295-293=588; +12).

Collard’s records would not last very long, less than 72 hours, as the scarlet and gray entered the State-Farm Laker Invitational in Hampton, Ga., on September 21-22. Junior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) shot two sub-70 rounds at the par-72, 7,202-yard Crystal Lake Golf Course including a first day 66, tying Collard’s fresh school record for an 18-hole low. Stanley followed up with a 69 on the tournament’s second day to break the school record for a 36-hole low compiling a stroke total of 135, 9-under par.

Stanley’s score put him in second place behind Chris Carlin of Barry University. Junior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) finished two strokes behind Stanley with a 137 (69-68; -7) in a tie for third place. The scarlet and gray went on to win the State-Farm Laker Invitational by four strokes over Georgia College and State University. Newberry shot a 562 (284-278; -14).

In the final two tournaments of the fall, Newberry faced stiff competition at the Cougar Invitational on October 5-6 in Columbus, Ga., and the Will Wilson Division II Southeast Preview on October 19-20 in Clemmons, N.C. The scarlet and gray completed play in 14th place at the Cougar Invitational and 11th at Will Wilson.

After more than a three month hiatus, the Newberry College men’s golf program entered its first tournament of the spring with a national ranking of 23rd on February 2-3 at the Outback Intercollegiate in Panama City, Fla. Hosted by Catawba College at the par-72, 6,541-yard Hombre Golf Club, six South Atlantic Conference institutions competed in a field of 15. Though the two days were dominated by a scorching hot Flagler College program, winning by 20 strokes, Newberry placed a respectable fourth with a two round total of 609 (300-309; +33). Sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) tied for eighth place with a 150 (72-78; +6) and sophomore Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) tied for 10th while churning out a 151 (75-76; +7).

The scarlet and gray would then pick up a pair of 10th place finishes at the Matlock Collegiate Classic on February 15-16 and Richard Rendleman Invitational on March 1-2.

With 28 days between competitions in the month of March, a resurgent Newberry College squad hit the links in Greenwood, S.C., at the Bearcat Clas-sic led by Stanley. A 54-hole tournament, the Bearcat Classic featured a 15 team field that included regional powerhouses Lander University, Arm-strong Atlantic State University, Georgia College and State, Belmont Abbey College and Clayton State University.

In his first ever individual collegiate victory, Stanley would pace the field with a school record 207 through three rounds of play. Shooting a 69, 68 and 70, Stanley finished 9-under par and staved off freshman teammate Gruenemeier by one stroke to grab the tournament championship. Gruenemeier completed play with a 208, the previous school record for a 54-hole low, and was very strong in the final two rounds. Gruenemeier shot a 71, 68 and 69 for the tournament.

As a team, Newberry took fourth place with a 20-under par performance 844 (279-284-281) and school record for 54-hole low.Heading into the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships at the Etowah Valley Country Club in Hendersonville, N.C., Newberry seemed to be righting its game.

Prior to the start of play in Hendersonville, the South Atlantic Conference recognized its postseason award winners and Newberry was well represented. For the third consecutive year, Brian McCants was honored as the SAC Coach of the Year. Gruenemeier was named SAC Freshman of the Year and three Newberry golfers were named to the All-SAC teams. Gruenemeier and Stanley were first team selections and Campbell was named to the second team.

A heavy favorite to win the tournament as the only regionally ranked SAC member institution, the scarlet and gray’s bid for back-to-back-to-back SAC Championships was thwarted by upstart Lincoln Memorial University.

The Railsplitters topped the field of nine with a three round stroke total of 873 (295-292-286; +9). Newberry finished in second place with a three round stroke total of 887 (299-299-292; +23). While there might have been some disappointment from the scarlet and gray coming up just shy of a three-peat, Stanley became the second Newberry men’s golfer to win the overall SAC tournament individual championship.

Shooting a 216 over 54-holes, Stanley was the only player in the field to shoot even par (73-71-72) and accumulated 13 birdies in his second con-secutive tournament victory. Campbell joined Stanley on the All-Tournament first team after finishing in fifth place with a 220 (74-71-75; +4).

For the third time in as many years, the scarlet and gray set their sights on a national championship with the first leg, the South/Southeast Super Regional, beginning May 3 in Wilson, N.C. A level of consistency has been established, now Newberry seeks to push the program to new heights and reach the ultimate goal of winning at the top level of Division II golf.

HEAD COACH

Brian McCants is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Newberry Col-lege men’s golf team. He was promoted to the head job in July of 2005 after serving as the team’s assistant coach during the 2004-05 season.

The Newberry men’s golf program enjoyed another strong season in 2009-10 with the scarlet and gray qualifying for the NCAA Division II South/South-east Super Regional for the third consecutive season. In nine tournaments during the 2009-10 campaign, Newberry picked up five top-5 placements, eight top-15 placements, and two tournament victories. The scarlet and gray finished in second place at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference

Championships and were consistently ranked in the top-25 nationally in the Golf World/Nike Coaches’ Poll.

The 2010 season saw Newberry break every 18-, 36-, and 54-hole low for both the team and individual records. Senior Sean Collard and junior Daniel Stanley each shot a 66 to hold the 18-hole low. Stanley also owns the school record for a 36- and 54-hole low with stroke totals of 135 and 207 respectively. Newberry crushed the school record for a team low for 18 holes with a 273 in the second round of The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic in mid-September. The seven best team 18-hole rounds of golf in Newberry history have come during the 2010 season.

The scalret and gray also set the team record for a 36-hole low at The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic with a combined stroke total of 551 which bested the previous low by 23 strokes. A new 54-hole low was set at the Bearcat Classic in late March when Newberry totaled 844 strokes, 28 lower than the previous mark.

McCants’ squad placed two on the All-SAC first team and one on the second team. Six Newberry individuals earned all-tournament honors throughout the 2009-10 season.

In his time as head coach of Newberry men’s golf, McCants has guided the scarlet and gray to 27 top-5 placements and seven tournament championships. Newberry individuals have placed first in McCants’ tenure including two SAC Champion-ship winners in Ben Lown (2008) and Daniel Stanley (2010). McCants has placed 10 individuals on all-conference teams and has coached three consecutive SAC Freshman of the Year award winners; Ben Lown in 2008, Matthew Campbell in 2009, and Chandler Gruenemeier in 2010. McCants has won the SAC Coach of the Year award three years in a row and has had two GCAA All-Region selections, three GCAA All-America Scholars and one GCAA All-America Honorable Men-tion.

As an assistant during the 2004-05 season, McCants helped direct the men’s team to four top-five finishes and a fifth place in the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships, shooting 306-304-294. It was the lowest 54 hole total at the SAC Championships by a Newberry team.

McCants came to Newberry via Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was a sales representative at Golf Dimensions. McCants was previously the head men’s golf coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. During his year at St. Andrews, McCants coached a pair of players to the NCAA Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional. His year at St. Andrews also saw Josh Nahm become the first St. Andrews player to be named to an All-CVAC Conference team. Nahm, a junior on that team in 2001-02, is now a lead golf instructor at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C.

McCants also served as a caddie at legendary Pinehurst Resort, home of the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open Championships. While in Pinehurst, McCants caddied for Eric Jorgensen, the 2002 Men’s North/South Amateur Champion, and Elizabeth Burden, a 2001 North/South Women’s Amateur Quarterfinalist.
